🇺🇸The Airborne Museum is honored to announce a donation from the Howell-Morrison family, which includes a jacket, a cap, dog tags, ID card holders, and patches that belonged to Brigadier General Howell.
In preparation for D-Day, the 82nd Airborne Division was divided into three assault groups: Forces A, B, and C. Force A, composed of paratroopers, was led by Brigadier General James Gavin, the division’s second-in-command. Force B, led by Major General Matthew B. Ridgway, the division’s commander, was composed of glider units—the glidermen.
Force C, on the other hand, is less well known. It was the “Seaborne” Force, which was to land at Utah Beach and bring with it armored columns, artillery pieces, and support troops. It was led by Brigadier General George P. Howell Jr., attached to the 2nd Airborne Infantry Brigade. Its first units arrived in Normandy on June 6, led by Colonel Edson Raff. It was largely thanks to this “Task Force,” as it was called, that the Battle of Sainte-Mère-Eglise culminated in a U.S. Army victory over the Germans by the end of the day on June 7.
The Airborne Museum would like to express its gratitude and sincere thanks to the Howell-Morrison family for entrusting us with these objects of inestimable historical value. As of today, they are on display in the museum’s Neptune Pavilion as part of the permanent exhibition.
