Pour la 12e édition d’Asia NOW, la Galerie Vazieux présente trois artistes originaires de Corée et de sa diaspora – Moonassi, Young-sé Lee et Hwaran Cho – qui réinterprètent l’héritage artistique coréen à travers des pratiques contemporaines. Leurs oeuvres mettent en dialogue des matériaux ancestraux tels que le meok (encre traditionnelle coréenne) et le hanji (papier de mûrier) avec des esthétiques, des techniques et des réflexions actuelles, présentant ainsi l’héritage comme une culture vivante et en constante évolution.

For the 12th edition of Asia NOW, Galerie Vazieux presents three artists from Korea and its diaspora – Moonassi, Young-sé Lee, and Hwaran Cho – who reinterpret Korean artistic heritage through contemporary practices. Their work brings ancestral materials such as meok (traditional Korean ink) and hanji (mulberry paper) into dialogue with contemporary aesthetics, techniques, and narratives, presenting heritage as a living and evolving culture.

From his training in traditional Korean painting, Moonassi (b. 1980) retains the use of materials – paper, ink, water – as well as the spiritual essence – representing feelings rather than likeness. In a very contemporary aesthetic, he deploys large black flat tints from which emerge characters evolving in enigmatic, silent landscapes. The sceneries, which sometimes seem to touch on surrealism, are inspired by the artist’s memories and poetic imagination. Conceived as metaphysical explorations of the human condition, Moonassi’s singular works offer an infinite palette of emotions, plunging us into a dreamlike universe of multiple interpretations.

Moonassi’s work will be presented at Asia NOW Paris Art Fair on October 20-24, 2026 with Galerie Vazieux (Booth H09).

During his experimentation, Young-sé Lee invented a unique technique that initially consisted of carving abstract motifs on a rough wooden panel. On this template he applied damp and dyed hanji paper, which adapted to the shape of the motifs carved on the wood. When it was dry, the artist removed the paper embossed by the shapes and mounted it onto the surface of the work, and repeated the process during the course of the work’s creation. His paper works were painted with natural and subtle pigments from Korea.
The combination of the rough wood, which leaves an imprint on the finesse of the paper, combined with the natural inks, gives his work a harmony that shifts between potency and lightness that invites the viewer to contemplate.

Young-se Lee’s work will be presented at Asia NOW Paris Art Fair on October 20-24, 2026 with Galerie Vazieux (Booth H09).

An artist of Korean origin who was born in 1956 in Seoul, Young-sé Lee (이융세) moved at a very young age to Paris, where he learned the rudiments of painting in the studio of his father, Ungno Lee; he subsequently attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the École des Beaux-Arts.
His work, which is resolutely modern, is rooted in Asiatic tradition. Nature, represented in an informal manner, combines the plant and mineral worlds, and water, earth, and light, and enters into a dialogue with the wealth of the materials and techniques used by the artist.

Young-se Lee’s work will be presented at Asia NOW Paris Art Fair on October 20-24, 2026 with Galerie Vazieux (Booth H09).

Hwaran Cho’s work is shaped by a close understanding of materials and an interest in breathing. Her “Alveolus” series began during a residency in Leipzig in 2024. Starting with the resemblance between grapes and the air sacs in the lungs, she has continued to explore the movement of breath. Working on paper and
cotton canvas, she allows water, pigment, and the air and seasons of each place to become part of the painting. Forms resembling alveoli and the natural spread of colour hold traces of her changing physical and emotional state, as well as the rhythm of her surroundings. Her paintings invite viewers to look again at the breath we take without thinking and to recognise the quiet beauty and wonder of life within it.

Born in 1994, Hwaran Cho (조화란) has studied Korean painting at Mokwon University in Daejon (KR). She had exhibitions in Korea, France and Germany.

At Kiaf Seoul we present exclusive early works by Young-se Lee. The artist carved abstract motifs into long wooden boards, then pressed hanji soaked in water, ink, and natural pigments onto the surface to capture the patterns and grain of the wood. The relief created by the pressed paper, the abstraction of the motifs, and the element of chance involved in the process come together across large surfaces to form his distinctive abstract language.
