Rigorous Architecture and Mastered Chaos:
La Religieuse by Pierre Chareau and a Portrait by George Condo.
Two works, two visions, engaged in dialogue across decades, yet united by the audacity to defy convention and remain timeless.

Created in the early 1920s, the floor lamp known as La Religieuse – model SN31 – stands as a masterpiece in the field of lighting design.

Its nickname, La Religieuse (“The Nun”), derives from its anthropomorphic silhouette, inspired by the traditional habit of nuns. The light, filtered through translucent stone, softly vibrates and fills the space with an almost sacred clarity.
The shaft, crafted from paddock wood, with its deep hue and strong form, evokes the structured black robe of a nun in her habit.
A functional object transformed into a luminous sculpture, La Religieuse embodies a unique vision of modernity: spiritual, sensual, and architectural all at once.

Pierre Chareau, SN31 or La Religieuse, c. 1925, floor lamp in padauk wood, alabaster, and wrought iron. Height: 183 cm.

☀️ Summer unfolds in dialogue with form and matter: Jean Royer’s Game Table Set embodies the sculptural elegance of mid-20th-century French design, where function becomes architecture. In resonance, the ceramic works of Henri Simmons and Eugénie O’Kin reveal a quieter poetry — earth transfigured into line, rhythm, and light.
Together, they compose a landscape where seasonality meets timeless creation.

☀️ Summer pause at the gallery.
But the light still plays — warm sun on a palmwood desk by Eugene Printz,
accompanied by the deep reds of Jean Dunand’s lacquer vases.
A quiet dialogue between light, form, and material.

Line Vautrin x Pierre Chareau ✨

This mirror was handcrafted by Line Vautrin in the 1950s, using Talosel—a resin she developed from cellulose acetate and later patented. The finely engraved surface and soft iridescence are characteristic of her work, and here she combines it with Lumaline to create a subtle, metallic shimmer. The texture, both sculptural and delicate, captures light in poetic ways. Like all of Vautrin’s mirrors, it was made in her Paris atelier and reflects the imaginative spirit of postwar French design.

! NEW OPENING !
GALERIE MARCILHAC RIVE DROITE 📍

We are thrilled to share exciting news with you — Galerie Marcilhac is growing!
While continuing to welcome you at our cherished and historic Rive Gauche location at 8 rue Bonaparte, we are proud to announce the upcoming opening of a second space on the Rive Droite this September:
120 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, 75008.

✨✨✨✨

A New Address, A Continued Legacy

Founded in 1969, Galerie Marcilhac has dedicated over fifty years to championing the decorative arts of the 20th century, building a reputation grounded in expertise and passion. The upcoming opening of our new space marks a meaningful chapter in this continuing story while reinforcing our commitment to sharing the richness of the Art Déco decorative arts and design with a broader, ever-curious audience.
This second space will complement our existing location on the Rive Gauche in the 6ᵉ arrondissement. It will allow us to further explore and exhibit the work of the most emblematic ensembliers-décorateurs and designers of the Art Deco period, while also highlighting later creations from the 1950s and 60s that embody the same spirit of technical innovation and refined craftsmanship. All with the curatorial rigor and steadfast vision that have defined Galerie Marcilhac for decades.

Tempêtes de chaleurs ? ☀️Escape into the refined coolness of the 1930s.
Our latest installation celebrates the noble materials and craftsmanship of the Art Deco era, with a special focus on the variety of wood species favoured by designers and their meticulous application using traditional cabinetmaking techniques.

✨ Shown here: the warm, sculptural use of walnut by Pierre Chareau in the SN37 armchair and MU265 bookcase, alongside the shimmering lacquers of Jean Dunand.

Come for the air conditioning, stay for the design. 😉
