Two masterworks could be discovered Maastricht 2026 Stand 477

1/ Haïda or Tsimshian bentwood bowl, northwest Coast, British Columbia, Canada, acquired in situ in the 1880’s. Wood (alder for the sides and cedar for the bottom), opercula shells. 40 cm x 34 cm x 13 cm. Date: 1850 or earlier.
2/ Haida hat. By Charles Edenshaw (Da.axiigang) and Isabella Endenshaw (Kwii.aang). Braided plant fibers, pigments. 44 cm x 18 cm. Late 19th century.

Juste une référence et une pensée sur le monde de l’art.
Saul Stanoff. « Peut-être aies-je surpayé quelques pièces aux enchères ? pendant des années j’ai chéri ces pièces, je les ai eues sous les yeux tous les jours. Chaque fois que je les étudie, c’est comme si je touchais un dividende. J’ai récupéré plusieurs fois mon argent grace au plaisir que j’ai eu de vivre avec elles. Ce sont des ŒUVRES D’ART que j’ai besoin de voir tous les jours, jusqu’à la fin de ma vie »

With a very schematic, modernist design, a disc for the head, a cylinder for the body crossed by a line for the arms, the AKUABA of the Ashanti populations of Ghana are today part of the corpus of iconic sculptures of ancient Classical African art.
Akuaba, also called fertility dolls, emphasize the interdependence between mother and child. These wooden figurines were worn by pregnant women, clasped in their loincloths and caressed for a long time, in order to ensure the arrival of beautiful children. They were also given to young girls, the possession of the doll guaranteeing them a good fertility.

This wonderful very classic and old example will be exhibited during Parcours des Mondes 2025 in our Gallery 33 rue de Seine.
