A Famille Rose figure of Liu Hai.
China, 18th - Qianlong Period (1736-1795)

A porcelain figure decorated in famille rose enamels, depicting Liu Hai smiling, seated in a boat shaped as an ingot, his right foot resting on an openwork coin-form support. He holds an ingot in his left hand.

We have not encountered comparable models decorated in famille rose enamels. In the work cited below, a figure decorated in famille verte enamels is likewise described as having an opening beneath the right foot, and it is also suggested that it may have functioned as a water dropper. The cavity beneath the foot is substantial and suggests that the figure may indeed originally have been intended for such use; however, there appears to be no other opening that would make its use particularly practical. Testing shows that liquid does emerge gradually in the form of droplets, yet the logic of the aperture does not at first seem especially efficient for the use a scholar might have made of it. The figure presents a minute or***ce on the inner side of the right arm, which could have served as the channel for the water; if so, accumulated dirt now prevents any flow.

The possibility of this piece functioning as a water dropper is also discussed in Biscuit: Refined Chinese Famille Verte Wares, Jorge Welsh, 2012, p. 130, fig. 33. Indeed, it is noted that the form of the figure, its weight, and the position of the opening render such a function rather difficult to control.

A large Arita leaping carp.
Japan, ca. 1700 - Edo Period (1600-1868)

A large leaping koi carp in Arita porcelain, resting on a pierced rock or riverbank. The fish is rendered in a particularly naturalistic manner, rising vertically with its mouth open, and predominantly decorated in shades of blue. The quadrangular base, modelled as a pierced rock, is enamelled in black, green and blue.

This carp originates from Japan and was produced at the Arita kilns circa 1680–1700. It belongs to a particularly expressive group of late seventeenth-century wares, during which Arita kilns experimented with new sculptural forms. Comparable productions include numerous figural pieces, as well as alternative representations of carp, sometimes combined with human figures.
The treatment of the scales, and their slight irregularity, attests to a still highly artisanal mode of production.

For a pair of comparable carp, see:
– Okimono: Japanese Porcelain Figures from the Edo Period, Luísa Vinhais and Jorge Welsh, 2022, p. 152, fig. 24.

A lotus‑shaped porcelain plate decorated with Famille Verte enamels and iron‑red decoration, depicting Mu Guiying and a standard‑bearer. The border is adorned with soldiers alternating with floral motifs.
China, 18th - Kangxi Period (1661-1722)

Mu Guiying is a legendary heroine from the Generals of the Yang Family (Yang Jia Jiang) cycle, popular tales set in China’s Northern Song dynasty. She is the daughter of a fortress chief who captures the young warrior Yang Zongbao, a member of the famed Yang clan, compels him to marry her and becomes his wife, later earning the respect of her father‑in‑law, Yang Yanzhao.
In tradition, she is distinguished by her courage and strategic skill in fighting the Khitan invaders, and after many of the Yang family warriors have fallen, she almost single‑handedly takes command of the family’s forces, thereby embodying the values of bravery, fidelity and resilience associated with the legendary Generals of the Yang Family.

A Famille Verte « Magu and Deer » Klapmuts.
China, 18th - Kangxi Period (1661-1722)

A Klapmuts-type bowl with a central decoration of the goddess Magu and a deer. The bowl combines famille verte enamels with an iron-red tending towards coral red, and gilt. The background of the central scene features a motif of lingzhi mushrooms.
The rim is richly decorated in coral red with alternating butterflies and crickets, interspersed with sw****ka motifs.

Magu is the Taoist goddess of longevity. She is often depicted with a deer, itself a symbol of long life and prosperity. Here, she is shown holding peaches of immortality.
