Galerie Mitterrand

Galerie Mitterrand was founded in 1988 by Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand and is currently located in a townhouse in Paris’ Marais district. Originally dedicated to showcasing contemporary sculpture, the gallery progressively widened the scope of its program and focused on exhibiting historically significant artists who began making art from the 1960s onwards. Since its creation, Galerie Mitterrand served as a platform for international artists in France. The gallery fostered appreciation for the work of Edi Hila, Allan McCollum, Niki de Saint Phalle, Tony Oursler, Anne and Patrick Poirier, to name but a few, and supported many others. The gallery also collaborates actively with the estates of Carlos Cruz-Diez, Dennis Oppenheim, Marta Pan, Francisco Sobrino, and Keith Sonnier to shed new perspectives on celebrated bodies of work. Galerie Mitterrand always was interested in promoting artworks deemed essential to our understanding of contemporary art. Reflecting on the rich complexity of the 21st century creative processes, the artistic programme recently expanded to a younger, more diverse, group of artists, making virtue of a dynamic intergenerational dialogue to address the many differences of a connected yet fractious world. In 2021, a new chapter of collaborations opened with the representations of Raphaël Zarka, My-Lan Hoang-Thuy, Wallen Mapondera and Mamali Shafahi.

Walking through the aisles of TEFAF New York 2026, visitors are greeted by François-Xavier Lalanne’s iconic Lapin à vent. Originally conceived in 1969 for the Schlumberger collection, the work combines the features of a rabbit, wings, a fish tail, and slender hoofed legs into a poetic weather vane mechanism — reflecting Lalanne’s fascination with the animal world and mythological forms.

Now open: TEFAF New York 2026

Mitterrand is delighted to return to TEFAF New York with a presentation bringing together works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne and Andy Warhol.

The presentation places a particular focus on Andy Warhol’s iconic Society Portraits, notably his portraits of Jackie Kennedy, shown alongside early black-and-white ballpoint pen drawings from the artist’s personal sketchbooks. In dialogue, works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne blur the boundaries between sculpture, furniture, and functional object.

Studio visit with Julie Hamisky 🌸

Step inside the artist’s studio and discover her electroplating process, through which flowers and vegetal elements are immersed in a galvanic bath to become enduring metal forms. Preserving every vein, fold, and texture, her work captures organic matter at the threshold of its transformation.

« French Vermilion » by Katja Schenker is currently on view at Mitterrand | Temple.

Working from themes of corporeality and bodily perception, Schenker investigates spaces that she both occupies and generates. Physical action becomes the
starting point of form: materials such as concrete, pigment, or textile are subjected to movement, pressure, and friction, allowing gestures to leave visible traces.
