A few analog moments from our evening with Nicola Cappellari (Nicola Cappellari), celebrating the launch of his latest book, Marea.

Nicola and his wife Roberta came all the way from Italy to spend the evening with us, bringing Marea and plenty of stories along with them. We talked analog, heard more about the images and ideas behind the book, learned a lot about Nicola’s personal journey with photography and shared a few glasses along the way.

A big thank you to Nicola and Roberta for making the trip, to Steve for kicking this off, and to everyone who came by and made our first event after the summer such a memorable one.

👉 More events are coming soon. Keep an eye out for what’s next, and come join us for the next one.

If you missed it, Marea is available at the shop, alongside Nicola’s first book, Analogical Limbo.

Éric Antoine’s photographs are difficult to translate onto a screen.

His large-format ambrotypes, made by hand from the glass plate to the wooden frame, have a physical presence that a JPEG can only hint at: the depth of the image, the glass, the weight of the frame and the fine details that reveal themselves when you stand in front of them.

If you saw Éric’s ambrotypes at Paris Photo in 2024, or encountered his work elsewhere, you know how different they are in person. The real objects are something else entirely, but these images give you a glimpse.

3 ambrotypes will be on display on Thursday, alongside other works.

See you soon!

How does a photograph on glass become a print on paper?

There’s an incredible amount of craftsmanship behind the heliogravures made for Éric Antoine’s *MITAN*. The photograph is transferred onto a copper plate, which is then engraved, inked and pressed onto paper.

There’s something special about seeing these slow and meticulous techniques still being practiced today, and about the people who continue to research, refine and pass them on.

A big thank you to Hervé Sachy from Atelier Héliopse and Alma from Baptiste Poisson for the work that you do, and for giving us a look behind the scenes.

We’ll have a couple heliogravures and other works from Éric Antoine’s body of work on display this Thursday for the launch of his latest book, MITAN.

Meet Éric Antoine next Thursday!

Éric was born in 1974, and discovered photography as he came out of adolescence. He gave it all his energy from there: traveling the world, encountering people and cities through his camera, and shooting for magazines for the next fifteen years.

Then, in 2010, his life took a sudden turn: he traded the noise of cities for a country house, slowed his pace considerably and retreated to the French countryside to develop a deeply introspective body of work. He began looking at life and nature in their simplest forms and has worked in large-format wet collodion on glass ever since.

A major contemporary figure of this 19th-century technique, he has created an artistic practice in which materiality and light take center stage. Between a perfectionist pursuit pushed to exhaustion, a quest for purity, and a meditation on time and transience, his work invites us to rediscover the world’s quiet beauty.

His work has been shown in galleries and museums across France, Europe and the US, and he’s represented in the US by San Francisco’s Dolby Chadwick Gallery.

Next week we’re celebrating the release of his latest and most ambitious book to date.

Book Launch | MITAN by Éric Antoine | Thu Oct 1 | RSVP link in bio

After a great first event of the fall with Nicola Cappellari last week, our next gathering is just around the corner, and it’s happening next Thursday with a photographer we’ve admired and followed for a while.

On October 1, we’ll have the pleasure of welcoming Éric Antoine for an evening around his colossal new book, MITAN.

For those who are familiar with his work yet, Éric is a major figure in contemporary wet collodion photography. For the past fifteen years, he has devoted much of his practice to the process, working with large-format cameras and making his own glass ambrotypes by hand, from preparing the chemistry to framing the final photographs. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in France, Europe and the US, and has become particularly known for the way he uses this 19th-century process to make contemporary images.

A few months ago, we shared the crowdfunding campaign for MITAN and encouraged you to help bring the book to life. We’re especially happy to now have Éric with us, with the finished publication in hand.

MITAN is the third book in a five-volume cycle that Éric is building over 25 years, following Ensemble Seul (2015) and Useful Lies (2021). Published by Hemeria, it brings together 75 photographs made using wet collodion on glass.

His approach is deliberately slow and methodical. He only creates 20 photographs a year and rather than constantly looking for new subjects, he often returns to the same places and motifs, allowing them to change over time.

đŸ›č There’s another part of Éric’s photographic history we’re excited to bring into the club too. He spent around fifteen years photographing skateboarding and travelling the world for magazines. He still skates today and will bring a limited edition of skateboards featuring his photographs, signed and numbered, alongside copies of his previous books, plus a selection of heliogravures, piezography prints, ambrotypes.

Fun fact: The eight colors at launch were yellow, red, blue, aqua, green, lime, pink, and khaki. Positioning a camera as a fashion accessory was a genuinely unusual idea in 1982, and it worked: the Pop sold 1.5 million units before its first major revision in 1985
