These words were first written by Tang Dynasty poet Liu Yuxi in 824 AD — the highest praise ever given to any flower in Chinese literary history. This 5th-generation master has painted them into being, 1,200 years later.

One peony. The whole world.

Deep coral at the centre gives way to blush peach, then to the palest cream at the outer petals. A gold stamen glows at the heart. Dark green leaves reach outward with confident looseness. Grey garden stones emerge from ink-washed mist below.

The colour gradation here — coral through blush to near-white — is extraordinarily difficult in Chinese ink painting, where colour must be applied wet, fast, and without correction. This peony was painted in one sustained breath. You can feel it.

This peony does not ask for your attention. It simply has it.

In Chinese tradition, a single peony in full bloom represents feminine beauty at its most sovereign, and prosperity arriving in its own time — unhurried, inevitable, complete.

Between them, ink-dark magnolia branches and grey bamboo weave a dark lattice that makes each flower blaze more brightly by contrast. Gold and white mineral dots scatter across the petals like morning dew.
