Helsinki Contemporary focuses on long-term collaborations with emerging and more established artists who take a physical, in-depth approach to their work.

Helsinki Contemporary focuses on long term collaboration with both emerging and more established artists who take a physical, in-depth approach to their work. The artistic profile is not restricted by media, in stead the priority is on visual art of current interest that is in dialogue with both the society surrounding it and the space in which it is presented. In the collaboration with the artist

the gallery accentuates curatorial commitment and focus on the content of the art. We emphasise the importance of experiencing works of art on site, together with other people. Besides the exhibitions in the gallery space, Helsinki Contemporary produces shows and events in temporary spaces and public locations in the city. Artist talks and debates are a vital part of the programme. The gallery also establishes an active international presence through engagement in fairs, collaborations and publications. The gallery strives to close collaboration with art institutions in both Finland and abroad. The gallery continues the successful work of Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary, established in 2007.

Anton Alvarez has created several public sculptures in Sweden, most recently for the county hospital in Trollhättan. His artistic practice constantly draws on the conventions and history of sculpture, architecture and craft. Alvarez’s sculptures are inherently spatial, commenting on both the built environment and the familiar, everyday elements of various public buildings.

Emma Sarpaniemi will be featured in the Start Collecting with CHART exhibition as part of Helsinki Contemporary’s participation to this year’s CHART art fair in Copenhagen.

Emma Sarpaniemi will also give an artist talk on Friday 28 August at 15.30–16.00 in Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s Festsalen as part of CHART’s Public Programme. Sarpaniemi will be interviewed by curator and author Nadine Wietlisbach.

Emma Sarpaniemi takes part in the 30th anniversary exhibition of Fotografisk Center in Copenhagen, on view from August 28 until November 8.

The exhibition unfolds the span of the photographic and camera-based medium, as well as how the contemporary arts venue has served as a centre of photography. The exhibition showcases work by 12 Nordic photographic artists.

Fotografisk Center is an art institution focusing on Danish and international contemporary photography and other camera-based media.

Apart from creating art objects, Anton Alvarez has collaborated with several design and fashion brands such as Gucci, Fendi, Acne and Issey Miyake for special projects.

In 2025, he created bespoke sculptures, for instance, for Fendi’s new flag ship store and took part in an exhibition celebrating Gucci during the Milan Design Week.

Ken Matsubara’s first solo show in Finland will open at Helsinki Contemporary this October.

Matsubara's work will be also on view at this year's CHART art fair in a duo presentation alongside Roland Persson. Matsubara's work is currently on view at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art in the group exhibition In Search of the Present – On Rootlessness.

Ken Matsubara (b. 1949 in Tokyo) is a Japanese artist who primarily works with video art. He has held solo exhibitions and participated in museum shows in Japan and internationally since the 1980s. Matsubara graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo in 1973. His works are in major private and public collections in Europe, the US, and Asia, such as those of Deutsche Bank, Bulgari, Goldmann Sachs, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Christen Sveaas Kunststiftelse and UC Irvine Langson, Orange County Museum of Art.

Anton Alvarez approaches artmaking through materials and processes. He designs and builds machines that he uses to create his works, combining the roles of both engineer and sculptor.

In his hands classical motifs such as the Roman pillar take a new form, appearing at the same time ancient, organic, contemporary, and out of this world. Alvarez’s works are both alluring and deceptive: although his pieces are often beautifully glazed and feature inviting textures and forms, there is also a harshness and an edge to his work.
