𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙥 As August slowly comes to a close, the printshop sets the mood for the upcoming season by presenting works in autumnal colours – in hues of yellows and oranges. Did you know: the online printshop can be easily filtered by colour. See more works online (🔗 in bio)!

Marja-Liisa Torniainen Marja-Liisa Torniainen : Sunnuntai rakennustyömaalla 1., 2019, 59 x 42 cm

Torniainen’s works available from the printshop are united by the colour yellow. The first three images date from the construction period of the Vuores residential area, and the last two are from the Finn-Match factory (Tikkutehdas) from the time it served as a hub for graffiti artists and the location for many photoshoots. Vuores has been built for several years, and a residential building has risen on the site of the Tikkutehdas, which, as far as the photographer knows, has not yet been completed.

Tapio Heikkilä Tapio Heikkilä : Kilpisjärvi (tunturikoivu), 2003, 30 x 24 cm

The photograph is part of an extensive series depicting Finland’s national landscapes, which the photographer captured between 2000 and 2002. Images from the series have been used in their book The Finnish National Landscape and exhibited in Finland and France. It was photographed with a Hasselblad camera on colour negative film, and printed by the photographer in 2003.

Liina Aalto-Setälä : Päivännäkemä III, 2023, 12 x 9 cm

Aalto-Setälä’s anotypes are made with plant dyes and sunlight. Her work explores the emotional connection between humans and the environment through old stories, viewed from the perspective of contemporary people.

Katya Lesiv Katya Lesiv : I love you, 2024, 30 x 40 cm

“One day I bought an unblown white peony from an old woman at the market. It blossomed, showy and beautiful. On May 24th, I bought another and placed them side by side in glasses of water. The first kept unfolding while the second was just beginning. The next day they were equally radiant; two days later, the first withered, the second still bloomed.”

I love you, also available in a publication format, is about stages of maturity and about appreciating their natural manifestations, a documentary account of how the two particular peonies rhythms of life overlap.

Jari Arffman: Sarjasta Counterparts – Vastinparit, St. Pragburg, 2002, 41 x 51 cm

Night.

Stanislava Ovchinnikova Stanislava Ovchinnikova : Untitled #6, from The Home Will Come Again, 2022, 40 x 59 cm

The work is part of the series The Home Will Come Again, created between 2022 and 2023. Initially conceived as a visual diary, the series seeks to reveal the distortion of the mundane brought about by the recent experience of exile. Here, domesticity appears foreign, slightly out of reach for both the observer and the photographer, following a rupture in its ritualised performance.

1.Johanna Naukkarinen Johanna Naukkarinen : from the series Lying Down, 2022
Dimensions: 42 x 29 cm

The series is part of an exhibition investigating 18th-century female figures in medical wax models, known as anatomical Venuses. Anatomical Venuses were originally modelled on the Venus figures familiar from n**e paintings, and this series playfully creates new anatomical Venuses from various female imagery, including n**e paintings and pin-up illustrations. Through digital collages, it examines recurring poses in representations of women that transcend artistic boundaries and enter the realm of science.

𝗛𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 / 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 📚Talking About Photobooks

Do you like looking at photobooks? Then you might also like talking/reading about photobooks.

The contributions in ‘Talking about Photobooks’ are based on artist talks, keynotes, and curatorial statements that play with and around the borderline between photobooks, artists’ books, catalogues, dummies, etc. edition works on paper. It draws on the experiences of Photobook Week Aarhus.

While the book is not a how-to guide, it deals with the history and histories of the photobook medium, its relationship to architecture and artificial intelligence, and the many roles the photobook can play in art and society. This also includes practical problems such as how to research, collect, circulate, and showcase photobooks.

Edited by Moritz Neumüller and published by Photobook Week Aarhus + FW:Books (2024)
