CHART Art Fair | Booth 21 | Päivi Takala

PÄIVI TAKALA paints precise and luminous paintings that carry a quiet, serene quality, crystallizing questions of existing and co-existing in the world. The soft palette of sand, deep darks and vivid blues nods to the quiet precence of early Renaissance frescoes, as do the floating hands caressing the black swan or holding the iridescent feathers. During her extensive career, Takala has explored painting as medium through disintegration, modification and reparation by for example physically perforating, sawing, and patching the paintings back together with cement. In her latest works she has focused on our complicated relationship living with other beings – horses, birds or flora.

Päivi Takala (b. 1970, FI) graduated from Hochschule der Künste, Berlin in 1998, and University of Art and Design, Helsinki in 1996. She has works in major collections, both private and institutional. Apart from museums inf Finland, she has exhibited in past years also at Ulterior Gallery, New York (2026), Malmö Art Museum (2021–24), Art Museum Riga Bourse (2017) with solo exhibitions at i.a. Cecilia Hillström Gallery, Stockholm (2025); Galerie Anhava (2024), Turku Art Museum (2013), Galleri Lars Olsen (2013), and Gallery Bourouina, Berlin (2011). In addition to her artistic work, Takala has just been appointed as the Professor of Painting at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts after teaching there as a Lecturer since 2014.

Inka Bell's practice is a seamless movement between technique, material, and motif. The more two-dimensional works are created by combining screen printing with laser engraving. Rather than adding to the surface, the image emerges by removing some of the solid printed colour with the burning beam of a precision laser. The three-dimensional paper sculptures are created by layering thousands of precisely cut paper elements, one piece at a time, in different rhythms and combinations, until the right order falls into place and the mind finds peace.
On Saturday 22 August, at 13.00–15.00, Inka Bell will be at the gallery to talk about her artistic practise, answer questions and discuss her solo exhibition Edestakas | To and Fro, on view until 30 August.

Galerie Anhava is excited about the upcoming CHART Art Fair, taking place in Copenhagen, 27–30 August! At Booth 21 we are pleased to present works by Essi Kuokkanen, Päivi Takala and artist duo Grönlund-Nisunen, who all in their own very distinctive ways make us reflect on the ways we see and interact with our surrounding world. Their works often show us that which lies under the surface, be it unruly emotions, the need to be touched, or the pressure and physical phenomena of the natural world.

We look forward to see you at Booth 21!

Meet the Artist: INKA BELL

On Saturday 22 August, at 13.00–15.00, Inka Bell will be at the gallery to answer questions and discuss her current solo exhibition Edestakas | To and Fro.
Tervetuloa | Välkommen | Welcome!
Inka Bell’s artistic practice is a seamless movement between technique, material, and motif, exploring liminal spaces between two- and three-dimensionality. Her paper based works are subtle events of transition, repetition, and transformation where two surfaces come together again and again.

Bell (b. 1981, Espoo) graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Printmaking Department of the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2021. In recent years Bell has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at Turku Art Museum, Bricks Gallery in Copenhagen, and Forum Box in Helsinki. Her works have been acquired for several public collections in the United States, Denmark, Belgium, and Finland, including EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. In 2024, Bell received the William Thuring Grand Prize awarded by the Finnish Art Society.

Taidekriitikko Timo Valjakka kirjoittaa HS – Helsingin Sanomat arviossaan Inka Bellin Edestakas-näyttelystä:

Näyttely on avoinna 30.8. saakka, tervetuloa!

Inka Bell saa aikaan hämmästyttäviä veistoksia tuhansista ja taas tuhansista paperinpalasista.

Inka Bell’s delicate and poetic, yet edgy and sharp works are subtle events of transition, repetition, and transformation where two surfaces come together again and again. Even with their echoes of minimalism and concretism, they are nevertheless unmistakably, playfully, insightfully Bell’s own.

Inka Bell's solo exhibition To and Fro is now up and running, warmly welcome!

The title of the exhibition, Edestakas / To and Fro, is like hint to the viewer: as one moves through the space, the works’ subtle insights, clever diversions, and optical events become activated; patterns and colours come to life, something happens before one's eyes, the brain gets a jolt. The elements in the works live in all sorts of directions, repeating, turning, rotating, stretching or falling into a rhythmic relation with what came before. Changes and transitions become visible in the relationship between the image and its outline.
The exhibiton runs until 30 August.

"Inka Bellin paperiveistokset ilahduttavat kaltaistani umpimielistä minimalistia. Ne näyttävät vähäeleisiltä, m***a kutsuvat lähempään tutkiskeluun – sekä näyttelyn nimen mukaisesti edestakaisin nitkuttamiseen, sillä liike herättää monet teoksista eloon."

Juuri avautunut Inka Bellin Edestakas-näyttely on mukana kulttuuritoimittaja Aino Frilanderin HS – Helsingin Sanomat viikonlopun näyttelyvinkeissä. Lämpimästi tervetuloa!

Galleriat ovat palanneet kesälomilta, aah! Taas pääsee näyttelyihin – näistä voi aloittaa.
