Ceramics, textile and the changing language of contemporary art.

For the first time, OOA GALLERY places textile and ceramics at the heart of its curatorial programme.

Not as decorative disciplines.
Not as secondary practices.
But as fully contemporary artistic languages.

Because perhaps one of the most interesting questions for a collector today is no longer simply:
What makes a work beautiful?
But rather:
What gives it artistic relevance?
In Médéric Turay’s ceramic vessels, the answer begins with matter. Clay becomes body. Surface becomes painting.
The vessel moves beyond function to become sculpture, presence and memory.

These works carry traces of gesture, colour and identity. They occupy space almost as figures would: singular, physical, impossible to experience only through an image.
And this is precisely where contemporary ceramics becomes compelling for the collector.

It challenges the traditional hierarchy between painting, sculpture, craft and design, asking us to reconsider what deserves a place within a contemporary art collection.

Perhaps collecting today is also about this:
recognising when an ancient material begins to speak an entirely new language.

The question is no longer whether ceramics belong in contemporary art.
The question is whether our way of collecting has evolved enough to recognise them.

AFRICAN CONTEMPORARY ART BEYOND REPRESENTATION. AFRICA IS NOT AN AESTHETIC.

Contemporary African art is reshaping the way we understand identity, memory, beauty, heritage and belonging.

For too long, African narratives were often framed through external eyes. Today, artists are reclaiming the image not simply asking to be seen, but defining how they are seen.

This is where REWA becomes especially powerful. Her portraits turn the face into a space of presence, cultural memory and self-definition. They are bold, intimate and unmistakably contemporary.

To collect contemporary African art is not to collect an image of Africa. It is to live with another perspective on the world and to allow that perspective to challenge your own.

There are works that occupy a wall.
And there are works that change the way we inhabit a space.
PAISAGENS, 2023 — ALEX ROCCA

Cotton, silk, natural wool and viscose create a surface that moves beyond textile to become territory, volume and memory.
Its deep blues, violets, blacks and golden lines shift with the light, the distance and the viewer’s movement. Paisagens is not exhausted in a first glance: it reveals itself over time.
This is also what contemporary art is about: new ways of communicating creativity, expanding artistic languages and transforming matter into a living experience.
That is why having a work like this at home goes far beyond completing an interior.
It means living with a piece that brings identity, sparks conversation and continues to transform before our eyes.

WHAT IF TRADITION IS NOT SOMETHING WE PRESERVE —
BUT SOMETHING WE CONTINUE?

On World Folklore Day, we look beyond folklore as something fixed in the past.

Culture survives through transmission.
Through gestures, materials, patterns, stories — and through the freedom of each generation to transform what it has inherited.

For Ghanaian artist Patrick Tagoe-Turkson, memory can begin with an unexpected material.
Discarded flip-flops found along the coast of Ghana are cut, assembled and given another life. Their colours and repetitions form intricate surfaces where movement, ecology, memory and cultural identity intersect.

What was once ordinary becomes an Object of Value.
And what appears radically contemporary can still carry echoes of older visual languages: rhythm, repetition, weaving, community and the knowledge embedded in making.

Patrick’s work reminds us that tradition does not necessarily survive by remaining unchanged.
Perhaps it survives because we continue to reinterpret it.

So today, the question is not simply:
What should we preserve?
But rather:
What do we inherit — and what do we choose to transform?

WHAT CAN AN ARTWORK REMEMBER THAT WE HAVE FORGOTTEN?

In Médéric Turay’s practice, memory is not simply told.
It is painted, stitched, layered, transformed, and given physical form.
Born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Turay has developed an immediately recognisable visual language: figures that evoke masks and contemporary totems, symbols, gestures, scars, colour, and surfaces where oil, acrylic, ink, coffee, burlap, copper, and ceramics coexist.
Nothing seems accidental.

In THREADS OF MEMORY, his work enters into dialogue with that of Alex Rocca, raising an essential question:
Can matter become an archive?
For Turay, the answer is yes.
His figures seem to emerge from a territory suspended between the ancestral and the radically contemporary. They do not illustrate the past; they reorganise it. Their surfaces hold traces, tensions, spirituality, resilience, and stories that continue to evolve.
And perhaps this is precisely what makes his work so compelling for collectors:
Turay has not simply created an aesthetic. He has built a language of his own.

His international trajectory has taken him from Abidjan to London, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai, Marrakech, Moscow, Cape Town, and Paris, with appearances at fairs including VOLTA New York, Art Central Hong Kong, Expo Chicago, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Art Miami, and AKAA Paris.
His work is also held in significant private and institutional collections, including those of Philippe Gellman, Charles Saatchi, Ethan Cohen, Fondation Donwahi, Fondation Banque Populaire, Collection Niarchos, and the sphere of the Mohammed VI Museum.

And 2026 marks another important moment in that journey.

We have grown used to looking too quickly. Landscapes. Skies. Water. Horizons.

We pass by them as if they were merely the backdrop to our existence. But they are not.
Nature is not around our lives. It is within them.

It reminds us of time, fragility, transformation, and also of what endures when everything else changes.

In the final days of SOFT HORIZONS, we would like to extend a different kind of invitation: not simply to come and see an exhibition. But to come and pause.
And perhaps also to ask ourselves what it means to bring an artwork home.
Because collecting art is not only about possessing what we find beautiful. It is also about choosing the images, the questions, and the emotions we want to live with.

There are works that occupy a wall.
And there are works that, quietly, change the way we look at the world.

CAN A THREAD HOLD THE MEMORY OF A BODY, A CULTURE, AND A HISTORY?

In Alex Rocca’s work, textile moves beyond the surface to become sculpture, structure, and presence.
Cotton, natural fibres, metal, glass, and ceramic are brought together through repeated gestures, stitching, perforating, twisting, binding, and assembling, transforming manual practice into an act of memory and transmission.

Rooted in Bantu, Yoruba, and Afro-Brazilian cosmologies, his works take the form of mantles, totems, masks, shields, and contemporary ritual objects. They exist in a delicate tension between fragility and strength, ancestry and experimentation, body and matter.

Through this selection, OOA Gallery continues its exploration of the renewed significance of textile within contemporary art and its growing presence on the international scene.
