L21 Gallery is a project that has continued to evolve over the years since it was founded by Óscar Florit in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) in 2012. At that time, the gallery was committed to the representation of emerging national artists and the experimentation with new exhibition formats. Examples of this were the projects The Envelope, The Window, at the gallery’s venue in Madrid, and the project T

he Apartment, which was awarded at ARCO 2015. L21 Gallery is currently an international and hybrid project located in two venues in Mallorca: a 450 m2 industrial building in Son Castelló industrial estate that has been hosting the gallery’s exhibition programme since 2016, and a second venue with five exhibition rooms in the city of Palma. These two large spaces allow us to freely develop the different aspects of the project: contemporary art gallery, artists’ residence and production centre (L21 LAB).

Fabio Viscogliosi, born in Oullins (France) in 1965, lives and works between Lyon, France and Geneva, Switzerland. His artistic practice is focused on painting and drawing and inspired by different influences like comics, literature, burlesque cinema or graphic design. His artworks are usually untitled or named after songs and quotes from his favorite books and movies. Actually, the sentence by Robert Bresson « Not to use two violins when one is enough » is also a good statement to describe his work as an artist.

He has shown his work in places such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (Lyon), Museum of Decorative Arts (Paris), Galerie du Jour – Agnès B. (Paris), and more recently at the Intermediatheque in Tokyo. He has also published several novels in France – Apologie du Slow (Stock, 2014) or Mont-Blanc (Stock, 2011) which has been translated into Italian and Japanese.

He received the Prince Pierre de Monaco award for his book Je suis pour tout ce qui aide à traverser la nuit (Stock, 2010). In 2015, he wrote a fiction about a picture by Fischli & Weiss (Les Hors-la-loi, Confluences/FRAC Aquitaine). He also made comic books (Da Capo, L’association, 2010) and art zines, like the current Belvédères series in duet with Luca Retraite.

As a musician, he has recorded several albums, and has collaborated with artists like Amedeo Pace (Blonde Redhead) or Vanessa Paradis. His new record, « Camera”, was published in 2021.

Whether in literature, music or art, the encounter with a character who dares to show us her rawest and most real side is always fascinating. We are drawn to human complexity, and it is often when the character peels off all the layers that protect her and shows herself as she is that we connect with her the most.

[…]

Eunsae Lee takes her inspiration from people around her and from her own experiences to create her characters and give permanence to that intimate moment. She describes her process as less spontaneous than it might seem, creating from the exhaustive study of each figure and drawing it over and over again

This is an excerpt from the text written by Florence Rodenstein for Lee’s solo show “Charcas”, but could easily be applied to her whole practice, where toughness and vulnerability are in the open to be seen at first sight, as if we could see both sides of a coin at the same time

L21 BARCELONA

CAMBIO DE ESCENA, until 05.04

In this exhibition, a tale unfolds, yet the plot remains undetermined. Nine artists act as both principal players and complementary figures, contributing to the larger picture. Lydia Gifford, Sihan Guo, Erika Hock, Igor Jesus, Valerie Krause, Alejandro Leonhardt, Gizela Mickiewicz, Jordi Ribes and Jenna Westra are set to play vital roles in this artistic journey.

This is a show about individuality and collective expression where one can appreciate the beauty that emerges when diverse voices converge in a dialogue of change.

“I often have the impression that a painting is born in reaction to the previous one. Each is the product of a double movement, dazzling and patient, in balance. Each is punctuated by the hours of its own appearance. Each is a play area circumscribed by the black line of its frame. And yet, all of them fit into a space that extends far beyond themselves. I like it to be that way.”

Excerpt from a two voices text between Fabio Viscogliosi and Esmeralda Gómez

Fabio Viscogliosi, born in Oullins (France) in 1965, lives and works between Lyon, France and Geneva, Switzerland. His artistic practice is focused on painting and drawing and inspired by different influences like comics, literature, burlesque cinema or graphic design. Memorias de Timothy Clarke

Manuel Aja Espil

The Argentinian artist based in Madrid, started this project in August 2022 emphasizing in the question, is painting essentially human? His project, “Memories of Timothy Clarke,” seamlessly blends 17th-century classical painting with 20th-century pop culture using artificial intelligence as a source of inspiration. While developing the paintings for this series, the artist kept thinking on the meaning of these machine-made images and how to interpret them.

Dwelling on these thoughts he understood the AI was basically making abstract images implying an unfathomable distance between these technologies and our own perception of the world. He acknowledges these types of technology as technologies of vision.

“I was thinking about the impossibility of capturing what I just saw with my phone camera. There are things that simply cannot be captured in any other way other than looking (or is it remembering?).”
