UPCOMING EXHIBITION: ARAKI POLAROIDS

We are delighted to be part of PHotoESPAÑA 2025 () with the exhibition Araki Polaroids, opening on May 22nd at VILLAZAN Project Space.

This intimate selection of instant photographs captures the raw, erotic, and emotional charge that defines Nobuyoshi Araki’s vision. Each Polaroid is a fragment of his lifelong obsession with life, death, love, and desire, all rendered through a lens that is both deeply personal and provocatively performative.

More than snapshots, these images are visual diaries, marked by spontaneity, vulnerability, and the unique chemistry of light and skin on instant film.

Opening reception: May 22nd from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Calle Justiniano 9, Madrid.

YVES KLEIN'S BLUE: A COLOR THAT TRANSCENDS ART

Discover Yves Klein’s groundbreaking exploration of blue, a color that not only defined his work but also redefined the boundaries of art. Known as International Klein Blue (IKB), this intense and vibrant hue became a symbol of the French artist’s quest to evoke the infinite and the spiritual through color.

In the 1950s, Yves Klein developed his signature color, IKB, which he mixed with synthetic resin to create a deep ultramarine pigment. This innovation led to Klein's distinctive Monochromes series, where he used only this color to focus on the pure emotional power of blue.

Klein’s work not only revolutionized the use of color in art but also left a lasting impact on artists like Lucio Fontana, Anish Kapoor, and Daniel Buren, who all incorporated Klein’s blue into their own explorations of space, infinity, and emotion. [...]

Repetition is never mere duplication, it is transformation. In "SHADOWS OF REPETITION", three distinct voices: Soonik Kwon, Yayoi Kusama, and Carlos García intertwine through a shared fascination with iteration, reflection, and the tension between presence and absence.

Kusama’s infinite polka dots dissolve the boundaries between self and environment, evoking both obsessive control and limitless expansion. Her mirrored surfaces extend this repetition into infinity, blurring the line between reality and illusion. Carlos García’s geometric sculptures, particularly from his Geometry of Thought series, introduce another form of repetition, one rooted in structure, order, and the interplay between light and shadow. His forms echo the legacy of minimalism while introducing a dynamic sense of movement and instability. Meanwhile, Soonik’s work engages with repetition through subtle shifts in form, material, and perception, inviting the viewer to consider the ephemeral and the enduring within seriality.

The exhibition is on view through May 10th, 2025, at VILLAZAN Madrid | Campoamor 17

VILLAZAN PRESENTS
“Buddhism in Contemporary Art”. Rooted in impermanence, non-self, and mindfulness, Buddhist philosophy seeps into contemporary art, dissolving the boundaries between thought, process, and perception. Buddhist philosophy has long transcended the boundaries of religion to become a fertile ground for artistic exploration. Concepts such as impermanence (anicca), non-self (anātman), and mindfulness have inspired artists seeking to question materiality, identity, and the nature of perception. In contemporary art, these principles are not merely illustrated, they are enacted through artistic processes and conceptual frameworks. Artists like John Giorno, Ugo Rondinone, and Soonik Kwon embody this spiritual lineage, transforming their practices into spaces of contemplation, healing, and presence.

VILLAZAN PRESENTS
“Vantablack: The Darkest Black in the World and Its Revolution in Contemporary Art”. Contemporary art employs cutting-edge materials like Vantablack (a substance that absorbs nearly all visible light) to push aesthetic boundaries and deliver a transformative visual experience. The use of Vantablack goes beyond its impressive visual qualities. This material invites us to question our relationship with color, light, and darkness. In many ways, Vantablack reflects contemporary art's concerns with perception, technology, and the ephemeral nature of human experiences.

VILLAZAN PRESENTS
“VILLAZAN’S 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY: HONOURING CUTEISM”. Celebrating a decade of curatorial vision, VILLAZAN returns to the movement that defined its beginnings, Cuteism, through a special presentation at ART OnO Fair 2025. To mark its 10th anniversary, VILLAZAN presents a special exhibition at ART OnO Fair 2025, paying tribute to the movement that shaped its earliest identity: Cuteism. Founded in 2015, the gallery emerged with a bold curatorial vision, embracing an aesthetic of tenderness, imagination, and sincerity in contrast to the dominant trends of conceptual distance and detachment. Cuteism, for VILLAZAN, was never a passing style; it was a position. A belief in the emotional depth of play, the radical potential of softness, and the enduring strength of childlike wonder.

At VILLAZAN Project Space, located in Justiniano 9, we present a special documentary exhibition of Yayoi Kusama, where her iconic infinite polka dots and mirrors dissolve the boundaries between self and environment, inviting viewers into a transformative journey of reflection and endless expansion.

In this same space, Soonik Kwon’s installation explores the rhythm of repetition through layered forms and material transformation. Stacked roof tiles, rubbed with graphite, evoke the passage of time, where accumulation reflects the past, and polished surfaces reveal the present. A video installation further immerses viewers in Kwon’s process, offering a rare glimpse into how these temporal dimensions take shape in her work.

The exhibition challenges us to consider fundamental questions: When does a pattern become a rhythm? When does reflection dissolve into infinity? SHADOWS OF REPETITION explores the transformative power of repetition, revealing the spaces where shadows flicker, forms shift, and meaning emerges.
The exhibition is on view through May 10th, 2025, at VILLAZAN Project Space, Madrid | Justiniano 9

VILLAZAN PRESENTS
“KUSAMA: INFINITY - THE LIFE AND ART OF YAYOI KUSAMA (2018)”. Born in Matsumoto, Japan in 1929, Yayoi Kusama is a pivotal figure in 20th and 21st-century art. Her work, featuring obsessive repetition, immersive sensory elements, and identity exploration, has cemented her status as a contemporary icon. The documentary Kusama: Infinity (2018), directed by Heather Lenz, traces the artist’s journey from her childhood in Japan to her international recognition. The film documents her artistic evolution as well as the challenges she faced in a male-dominated world, her relationship with art as therapy, and how her work anticipated some of the most relevant currents in contemporary art.

Yayoi Kusama, born on March 22, 1929, in Matsumoto, Japan, is a renowned contemporary artist known for her distinctive polka dots, infinity nets, and immersive installations. For Yayoi Kusama, repetition is both an act of control and an avenue for release.

Her compulsive repetition of patterns reflects both an attempt to control her inner chaos and a surrender to it. Kusama has described her work as a way to self obliterate, dissolving into the rhythm of her endless motifs. Paradoxically, in this obliteration, there is also an emergence, a defiance of boundaries, an insistence on presence. Her work exists at the edge of contradiction, obsessive yet liberating, intimate yet cosmic, repetitive yet infinitely varied.
