Las propuestas estéticas de Juan Castillo se entroncan con sus convicciones sobre la relación del arte con la vida, la dignidad de los desplazados, el desgarro de los exilios y las ausencias. Son trabajos que abarcan multitudes de líneas temporales y de rostros-paisajes que el artista imaginó, transfiguró y conectó entre sí.

[EN] Juan Castillo’s aesthetic visions are rooted in his convictions about the relationship between art and life, the dignity of displaced people, and the heartbreak of exile and absence. These works span a multitude of timelines and feature faces and landscapes that the artist imagined, transformed, and interwove.

“Realizada finalmente en 2024 en Caleta Vítor, esta acción constituye el tercer gran proyecto de una trayectoria en la que la poesía de Zurita ha abandonado repetidamente la página para inscribirse directamente en el paisaje. […] la exposición presenta los registros de aquella intervención, realizados por el cineasta Felipe Ríos y el fotógrafo Gonzalo Donoso, y permite observar la obra desde sus huellas: imágenes de una escritura que existió durante unas horas sobre la piedra antes de desaparecer con la llegada del día. (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] “Finally carried out in 2024 at Caleta Vítor, this action constitutes the third major project in a trajectory in which Zurita’s poetry has repeatedly left the page to be inscribed directly onto the landscape. […] The exhibition presents documentation of that intervention, captured by filmmaker Felipe Ríos and photographer Gonzalo Donoso, allowing viewers to encounter the work through its traces: images of a text that existed on the rock for a few hours before disappearing with the arrival of daylight.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

“Ver al otro no debería equivaler a reducirlo a un objeto de percepción; de ahí que los rostros difusos de Castillo se resistan a quedar fijados en una identidad reconocible. Pero esa resistencia no consiste simplemente en escapar de la representación. Sus imágenes parecen interrogar las condiciones que hacen posible el reconocimiento de un rostro, ya sea éste el de un paisaje o el de una nación.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] “Seeing the other should not amount to reducing them to an object of perception; hence Castillo’s blurred faces resist being fixed into a recognizable identity. Yet this resistance does not simply consist in escaping representation. “En Verás, esa experiencia técnica y artística resulta decisiva. Para proyectar el poema sobre el acantilado, Delight Lab tuvo que desarrollar una solución capaz de llevar la escritura a una escala extraordinaria. La proyección debía atravesar aproximadamente 1,2 kilómetros hasta alcanzar el otro extremo de la Caleta Vítor (Arica). La colaboración entre Zurita y Delight Lab produce así algo más que la ilustración luminosa de un poema. La luz se convierte en escritura y la escritura, a su vez, modifica nuestra manera de percibir el paisaje.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] In Verás [You Will See], this technical and artistic experience proves decisive. To project the poem onto the cliff face, Delight Lab had to develop a solution capable of bringing the writing to an extraordinary scale. The projection had to travel approximately 1.2 kilometers to reach the opposite end of Caleta Vítor (Arica). The collaboration between Zurita and Delight Lab thus produces something more than the luminous illustration of a poem. Light becomes writing, and writing, in turn, transforms the way we perceive the landscape.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

“Verás añade una dimensión temporal especialmente significativa. La acción se realizó entre el atardecer y el amanecer. La escritura apareció sobre la oscuridad de la roca y permaneció durante la noche hasta que la luz natural comenzó a borrar progresivamente la luz del poema. El propio tiempo de la obra forma parte de su significado: la escritura aparece, resiste durante unas horas y finalmente desaparece. Lo que queda es el paisaje y el registro de aquello que ya no puede volver a verse de la misma manera.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] “Verás [You Will See] adds a particularly significant temporal dimension. The action took place between sunset and sunrise. The writing appeared against the darkness of the rock and remained throughout the night until the natural light began to progressively erase the light of the poem. The work’s own temporality is part of its meaning: the writing appears, endures for a few hours, and finally disappears. What remains is the landscape and the record of something that can no longer be seen in the same way.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

“En “El rostro es el paisaje” (2018), donde un esqueleto se despliega horizontalmente entre siluetas de rostros apenas esbozados, Castillo hace algo muy curioso con esa idea: la osamenta, lo que queda cuando la carne, es decir la superficie, ha desaparecido, yace precisamente en el lugar donde el rostro y el paisaje deberían fundirse. Y si “el rostro es una política”, como dicen Deleuze y Guattari, deshacerlo es otra, la de un devenir clandestino que Castillo convierte en rectángulo negro casi abstracto que insinúa la bandera de Martín Gubbins que aparece en su obra “Lo nacional se desarma” (2020).” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] In “El rostro es el paisaje” [The Face Is the Landscape] (2018), where a skeleton unfolds horizontally among silhouettes of barely sketched faces, Castillo does something very intriguing with this idea: the skeleton, what remains when the flesh—that is, the surface—has disappeared, lies precisely where the face and the landscape should merge. And if “the face is a politics,” as Deleuze and Guattari put it, undoing it is another kind of politics: that of a clandestine becoming, which Castillo transforms into an almost abstract black rectangle that hints at Martín Gubbins’s flag, which appears in his work “Lo nacional se desarma” [The National Unravels] (2020).” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

“El poema concluye con una imagen límite: ver y no ver, mirar y llorar. En ese punto, la obra vuelve sobre una de las preguntas centrales de la poesía de Zurita: qué puede hacer una imagen frente a aquello que no puede representar por completo. La luz permite ver el poema y anuncia su desaparición. Cuando amanece, la escritura deja de ser visible y queda solamente su memoria. ‘Verás’ es, por ello, una obra sobre la aparición y la desaparición, sobre la palabra y el paisaje, pero también sobre la capacidad de la poesía para ocupar físicamente el mundo.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] “The poem concludes with a liminal image: seeing and not seeing, looking and weeping. At that point, the work returns to one of the central questions in Zurita’s poetry: what can an image do in the face of that which it cannot fully represent? Light makes the poem visible while announcing its disappearance. When dawn breaks, the writing ceases to be visible, leaving only its memory. ‘Verás’ is therefore a work about appearance and disappearance, about word and landscape, but also about the capacity of poetry to physically occupy the world.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

“Las exposiciones dedicadas a Juan Castillo y Raúl Zurita pueden ponerse en diálogo a partir de dos ideas fundamentales: el territorio como superficie de inscripción de la memoria; pero también a partir de una importante reflexión en torno a la mirada y el rostro. En ambos proyectos, el paisaje deja de funcionar como un simple escenario para convertirse en un espacio activo, capaz de contener experiencias histórico-sociopolíticas.” (Tiago de Abreu Pinto).

[EN] “The exhibitions devoted to Juan Castillo and Raúl Zurita can be brought into dialogue through two fundamental ideas: territory as a surface upon which memory is inscribed; but also through an important reflection on the gaze and the face. [EN] “‘Verás’ is the result of an idea that Raúl Zurita had been conceiving for over two decades: to write a poem with light on the cliffs of northern Chile. Finally realised in 2024 in Caleta Vítor, this project constitutes the third major undertaking in a career in which Zurita’s poetry has repeatedly left the page to be inscribed directly onto the landscape.
