Digital experiences are the focus of this presentation in the IX European Forum’s General Conference, “Historic Gardens Grow Europe”.

Susana Silva and Paulo Carvalho will present “Growing Opportunities in European Historic Gardens through Digital Experiences”. Both are affiliated with the University of Coimbra and CEGOT – Centre of Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning.

Maltese garden heritage will be represented in “Historic Gardens Grow Europe”, the General Conference of the IX European Forum on Historic Gardens.

Frederica Agius will present “Palazzo Parisio: A Case Study of Maltese Garden Heritage”. She is Curator of Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar and a lecturer at the University of Malta.

🌿 The European Route of Historic Gardens (ERHG) announces the second edition of the , established to recognise outstanding initiatives in the preservation, restoration and promotion of historic gardens across Europe.

The Prize highlights best practices that increase public awareness of the cultural, historical and ecological value of historic gardens and address challenges in their conservation, management and sustainable development.

Individuals, institutions and organisations from all Council of Europe Member States are eligible to apply. Submissions open on 1 October and close on 31 December 2026. Applications must be completed in English.

🏆 The first Acanthus Prize awards ceremony will be a highlight of the IX European Forum on Historic Gardens in Athens.

The European Route of Historic Gardens (ERHG) will celebrate the Forum from 7 to 9 October under the theme “Historic Gardens Grow Europe”. The event also forms part of the ERHG’s 10th anniversary celebration.

During the ERHG official gala dinner on 8 October, the winners of the first will be honoured. The Prize recognises outstanding initiatives in the preservation, restoration and promotion of historic gardens. Its first edition received 47 entries from 15 countries and has recognised 13 winners from eight countries.

The winners are:

Restoration experiences from Croatia will be featured in “Historic Gardens Grow Europe”, the IX European Forum’s General Conference.

Mara Marić, from the University of Dubrovnik’s Department for Mediterranean Plants, will present “Restoration and Revitalization of Historic Gardens in Croatia through European Union Funding: Examples and Experiences”.

Water management in a historic garden is the subject of this contribution to the Forum’s General Conference, “Historic Gardens Grow Europe”.

Kinga Grege will present “Resilient and Circular Water Management for the Historic Domaine de Sceaux”. She heads the Sceaux Estate Park / The Bièvre Valleys Promenade unit within the Nature and Landscapes Directorate of France’s Hauts-de-Seine Departmental Council.

Federica Bergamini and Claudia Mezzapesa will present “Growing Europe through Historic Gardens: Building a Network across the Medici Villas UNESCO Site”. Bergamini is Director of Ville e Residenze monumentali fiorentine ; Mezzapesa heads its Parks and Gardens Department.

🌿 The European Route of Historic Gardens (ERHG) participated in the 15th Advisory Forum on the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, held in Yerevan, Armenia, from 23 to 25 September 2026.

Under the theme “Routes through Time and Cultures: Education for Sustainable Heritage”, María del Pozo, Ana Rosa Moreno and Iryna Denysko represented the ERHG in the Forum’s sessions, workshops and B2B meetings.

During the B2B sessions, they exchanged views with representatives of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes from Armenia, Cyprus, Malta, the Czech Republic, Austria and the Slovak Republic, exploring the possibility of welcoming new ERHG partners from these countries.

The General Conference of the IX European Forum on Historic Gardens will include a presentation on the Municipal Garden of Rethymno.

“The Municipal Garden of Rethymno: 101 Years of History and Living Heritage” is credited to Eftihia Alevizaki, Nikoleta Gkolfinopoulou, Giorgos Papadosifos and Panayiotis A. Nektarios. The programme identifies the Municipality of Rethymno’s Department of Green Spaces and Urban Environment with this contribution.

Climate change is among the subjects addressed in “Historic Gardens Grow Europe”, the General Conference of the IX European Forum on Historic Gardens.
