Pair of “Jill” floor lamps by Perry A. King, Santiago Miranda, and Gianluigi Arnaldi for Arteluce, 1980s.

A clean, architectural design built on contrast — a slender grey metal shaft rising from a frosted glass base. The light is directed upward, creating a soft, controlled glow rather than direct illumination.

A refined example of late 20th-century Italian lighting, where form is precise, and every element has a clear function.

A modernist retreat in the mountains of Montana designed by Bartholomew Voorsanger.

The house is structured around a steel frame and large floor-to-ceiling glass panels, opening the interior directly to the surrounding landscape of mountains and water. Transparency replaces solid walls, allowing the view to define the spatial layout.

The design references Mies van der Rohe’s Resor House concept, with a clear emphasis on geometry, structure, and connection to nature through glass.

Interior design by Helen Kent, ASID is restrained and functional, using natural materials and a neutral palette to support the architecture rather than compete with it.

Landscape architecture by Armand Benedek, FASLA extends the building into its site, keeping the intervention minimal and closely tied to the terrain.

Both lamps are available on the Cultural Habits website.

The Pirouette table lamp by Jean Chavanis, 1930s — chromed metal, adjustable, designed for precise, focused light.

The Italian suspension lamp, 1960s–70s — a geometric metal frame with layered glass that softens and diffuses the glow.

Two different approaches — one built on movement and function, the other on structure and light.

A pair of French sconces from the 1960s, attributed to Maison Lunel.

Defined by their flowing, “whiplash” lines, the design introduces a sense of movement across the wall. The combination of black lacquered metal and brass creates a sharp contrast — matte and reflective, structure and light.

Each arm extends in a smooth, continuous curve, giving the piece a sculptural presence while remaining compact in scale.

A strong example of mid-century French lighting, where form, material, and proportion are carefully balanced.

Kinetic Composition for a Los Angeles Collector
Architecture by Langdon Wilson
Interior architecture by Polshek and Partners

A private residence in Los Angeles designed for an art collector, where architecture and interior are built around living with art, not just displaying it.

The interiors are defined by white walls, controlled natural light, and carefully scaled spaces that allow large works to coexist with everyday living. Instead of turning the house into a gallery, the design balances openness and functionality — with living areas, dining spaces, and private rooms arranged on a single level.

Key elements include a dramatic living room with a sculptural steel ceiling, custom-designed furniture, and walls conceived as backdrops for major artworks. Light is carefully managed through specialized glass and orientation, ensuring the art is preserved while remaining part of the daily environment.
