The selection of the "Piece of the Month" for October 2026 coincides with the observance of World Food Day. Celebrated annually on October 16—a day proclaimed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)—World Food Day aims to raise public awareness regarding the plight of the hungry and undernourished worldwide and to encourage people across the globe to take action against hunger; the occasion is observed in more than 150 countries each year.
Ancient Egyptians employed various food preservation methods—such as drying, salting, and immersion in honey or fat—and stored food in underground silos or tightly sealed pottery jars to prevent the entry of air or insects.
The Matrouh Museum’s collection includes numerous pottery vessels used for food storage, among them a jar bearing traces of pigment that dates back to the Greco-Roman period.
