END OF AN ERA...
Dear Artists & Friends of the Luxor Art Gallery Community,

We are so grateful for the years of support for our art gallery, since its opening in 2018. There are so many wonderful and fond memories, from art exhibitions, to workshops, to beautiful afternoons meeting new people and always sharing our love of art with others.

***

Today, we are very sad to announce the closure of our gallery location across from the extraordinary Colossi of Memnon.

There are many reasons contributing to the location closure that are out of our control, but the final challenges were too much:

Recently, our neighbor expanded his business, and without warning or compromise, took over our gallery garden area which we had always paid rent for, essential to our welcoming entrance and workshops. The wonderful trees and flowers were all cut down, and the entire garden bricked up, leaving us with only a narrow entrance to our front door 1½ meters wide. Our landlords did nothing to prevent this offense.

Our Luxor Art Gallery street sign was also offensively cut down and thrown aside.

Our friends have advised us not to give up: build higher, fight back, spend more money... But if we don’t feel welcome in our own community, imagine how our artists and guests might feel.

***

When we moved to the location across from the Colossi of Memnon in 2020, we were excited to contribute to our new neighborhood, including Shady Rabab’s music studio nearby, and it seemed like the area could evolve into an artistic and inspiring safe space to welcome artists, tourists, and families alike with all our neighborhood businesses thriving.

Luxor Art Gallery has presented artwork by over 75 artists in the gallery and on the website, with numerous group and solo exhibitions, art workshops, field trips, music performances and social gatherings. The gallery has been a meeting point for Egyptian locals, families, art students, Egyptologists, and tourists to meet and share their love of the arts.

Luxor Art Gallery has been a dream to bring our artistic community together. We introduced our artists and made new connections everywhere, growing our “family” of friends daily, in person and online. Our social media friends were global, buying art and enthusiastically reaching out.

***

I personally apologize and admit I have failed to grow the gallery as a business in recent years:

• Our profits went to rent, taxes, and utilities, a small salary for our Gallery Manager, marketing, and event costs, leaving nothing for growth or personal compensation. Some artists took advantage of our wonderful marketing to sell privately so that we very often lost our commission fees. And several potential clients often told us that they would rather buy art directly from the artists and exclude the gallery commission because “they couldn’t afford” that little extra that would help us.

• Since the war in Gaza among other crises in the world, our social media support for buying art has diminished under the shadow of so much trauma and inhumanity. I personally have found it so difficult to share joy and try to sell art when so many are suffering in the world, and admit I have personally spent less time on social media for my own sanity.

• Since the very first day opening Luxor Art Gallery, I have endured several traumatic setbacks that altered my ambitions for the gallery, and in the last few years, my ability to be present at the gallery has become more and more challenging.

• The mark of success is adversaries and rivals, and we’ve had our share. I have even been told to "leave." However, the idea of competition with other galleries is a fool’s worry: the more Art Galleries in Luxor the better for everyone. Imagine if Luxor became known not only as tourist site for antiquities, but a cultural creative center where everyone could thrive!

Also, to the Artists, I have one thing to say:
• MAKE MORE ART! As an artist myself, I know personally how hard that is... but a business cannot thrive on ONE painting that you share with an art gallery year after year. And try to be ORIGINAL; we can all learn from copying Masters and colleagues, but plagiarism is always an offense, and should not be sold as ART.

***

I would also like to take this opportunity to praise those individuals and dear friends who believed in Luxor Art Gallery and gave their invaluable support for years. To them, I am truly grateful, and to them I promise that Luxor Art Gallery is NOT OVER, but will remain a possibility, and a hope…

• Alaa Awad, who has been the leading reason for Luxor Art Gallery’s existence since 2018. It has been a true honor, and to you Alaa, I promise to keep trying.
• Ashraf Yunis, who recognized the value of the art gallery, created our space at Memnon, and gave his critical support again and again, working so hard. I will love you forever.
• Mahmoud Ahmed, the most reliable, trustworthy, honest, hardworking, sincere, kind soul who has earned his place as our Luxor Art Gallery Manager and dearest friend.
• Yunis Ashraf Yunis, who has grown up participating at the gallery since he was a boy and inspires our hopes for the future.
• Katrina Vrebalovich, who brought her passionate art, enthusiasm, ideas, and joy since the very beginning in 2018. The gallery has never been the same since she moved away.

Alaa Awad is a virtuoso painter based in Luxor, Egypt, famous for his public art. During the Egyptian Revolution he created murals in Cairo and captured the attention of the media and the world, such as his depiction of a funeral march and wailing women on the walls of the city which came to represent the grief and outcry of the entire country. His style is both an ode to ancient Egyptian pharaonic artwork and the living heritage of rural life that still can be found in places like Luxor’s West Bank, full of celebratory colors, spirited traditions, and the vibrations of community. The essence of his paintings honors Egypt past and present, and yet is uniquely his own style and totally contemporary; there is no mistaking an Alaa Awad painting. —D.N.

The vivid black and white images of photographer Joseph Hunwick transports us back in time, not just several decades into the past, but back through the centuries, capturing the soul of Egypt’s rural and noble people as they have always been, and still exist today in the remote corners of majestic village life. Visual poetry, Joseph's photographs stay with you as a memory, familiar and ethereal. Working between the UK, Barcelona, and Spain, and traveling worldwide, Joseph works as a professional photographer for numerous clients and publications including Condé Nast Traveler, New York Times, and Thames & Hudson. His photography in the book The Hidden Treasures of Timbuktu record “the faded majesty of the city and the dignity and warmth of its modern-day inhabitants.” It is an honor to share Joseph’s work through Luxor Art Gallery and bring his work “home”. —D.N.

An enigmatic, fascinating artist, Abou Elyoun did not study sculpture in art school, pursuing Egyptology instead. But his natural, raw talent, combined with a heightened sensitivity, passion, and understanding of ancient Egyptian art, led to Abou’s glorious artworks. His faces are immediately majestic, royal, and timeless, capturing the intensity of divine ancestors, but with such a living beauty they seem to breathe with life. Whether carving in stark plaster or crude wood, he has the subtle touch and the most delicate curve to lend his faces an exquisite Egyptian quality: bold, heavy-lidded eyes; strong, angular noses; lavish, full lips, and perfect symmetry. His sculptures feel like they were only just recovered from the depths of a tomb, and there’s no question of Abou’s heritage, as a direct descendent of the world’s first and finest artist. In discovering his artwork, one also witnesses the artist discovering himself, as he is not only humble but surprised and grateful at the enthusiasm towards his beguiling work. —D.N.

LUXOR ART GALLERY
This gallery connects Luxor’s lively present with its rich past

When people think of Luxor, they often imagine temples, tombs, and ancient gods carved in stone. They are correct—Luxor is one of the richest archaeological cities in the world. However, just across the Nile, on the quieter West Bank, is a special place that brings new life to this ancient area. It’s called the Luxor Art Gallery. If you enjoy discovering hidden gems while traveling, this might become your favorite stop.

Luxor Art Gallery has showcased artwork by more than 75 artists both in the gallery and on its website. The gallery hosts numerous group and solo exhibitions, art workshops, field trips, music performances, and social gatherings. It serves as a meeting point for locals, families, art students, Egyptologists, and tourists to come together and share their passion for the arts.

MORE THAN JUST A GALLERY

Luxor Art Gallery is not a large museum with quiet halls and fancy ropes. It is a small, sunny courtyard located near the Colossi of Memnon. Artist and curator Dominique Navarro founded it in 2018, recognizing a need for a space to showcase living artists from Upper Egypt.

This gallery connects Luxor’s lively present with its rich past. Inside, you will not find old relics or statues behind glass. Instead, you will see bright, colorful artwork that expresses life, feelings, and culture. Each painting and sculpture tells a personal story, reflecting the beauty of the Nile and the dreams of the countryside.

ART THAT SPEAKS

What makes the Luxor Art Gallery truly special are its artists. These individuals are not distant names; many are local to Luxor, with a significant number being women who draw directly from their roots, homes, and heritage.

In the gallery, you might encounter:

Alaa Awad’s powerful murals blend ancient Egyptian art with themes of modern revolution.

Sara El Okally’s thoughtful sculptures of animals, often crafted from recycled rubber and bronze.

Ahmed Abd El Fattah is a talented artist renowned for his portrait and figurative works, embracing new challenges in style and scale.

Sculptors like Mohamed Ibrahim, who shapes stone and clay into graceful forms that resonate with the traditions of the pharaohs.

Every piece feels like a conversation between the old and the new, myth and memory, Luxor and the world.

A PLACE TO BREATHE, CREATE, AND CONNECT

The gallery is more than just a place to see art—it’s a place to experience it.

Its courtyard is a quiet sanctuary with art, natural light, and often music. You might find a painting workshop happening or hear a small concert as the sun sets. The space regularly hosts live events, artist talks, and children’s workshops, and collaborates with Egyptologists and conservationists.

In April 2025, the gallery held “Sa’idi Spirit,” an exhibit featuring 10 artists from Upper Egypt, celebrating rural identity and cultural pride. They also work with UNESCO on projects that help children connect art to tomb restoration.

This is not a tourist spot. It is a vital part of the community.

ART YOU CAN TAKE HOME

Before you leave, explore the shop. You will find:

– Original paintings and prints
– Sculptures and handmade crafts
– Beautiful art books and coloring books, many illustrated by Dominique herself

These items are not mass-produced souvenirs. They are unique pieces with story, spirit, and soul—things you will want to keep for a lifetime.

Why It Belongs on Your Itinerary

Luxor Art Gallery is a special place for travelers. It’s calm, beautiful, and full of warmth. While the temples share stories from history, this gallery highlights the present and the creative people living along the Nile.

After visiting Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, take a moment to relax. Cross the river and visit the Luxor Art Gallery. You might find today’s Luxor just as inspiring as its ancient past.

Reducing the figure to essential form, with colors extracted from the depths of her idiosyncratic vision, Ghada Embarek’s artworks deduct distractions down to essence. Human figures with shadowed faces and billowing robes interact like a dance of light and darkness, separating and joining, intwining and embracing. Her stark imagery encapsulates isolation and companionship, community and spirituality. A series of watercolors depict rural Egyptian woman in their long gallabia as they gather together to break bread or gaze at the desert stars. Her new collection "وش مراي Wesh Maraya" (Double Faced) features portraits of her fellow Egyptians from a "mirrored" perspective, the inside out, recognition versus dissimulation, nature reflecting soul. Who are we? What are we? Beyond flesh and blood, Ghada delves deep into an interior philosophy that unites us all, seeking the bonding secrets of our humanity. Based in Cairo with family roots in Qena, Ghada was influenced by her world travels early in her artistic career, living in Japan and Singapore. She returned to her home country of Egypt with an enlightend vision that has enriched her fascinating exploration throughout her art. Her paintings, watercolors, and sketches illuminate the auras and mysteries of life, creating peculiar shapes we all can perceive and recognize and feel. —D.N.
