Souvenir of the Holy Family Route
The town of “Sakha,” located in Kafr El Sheikh, is considered one of the most important sites associated with the Holy Family’s journey in Egypt. According to Coptic tradition, the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus passed through this area during their historic journey across Egypt. The site gained great religious significance, as it is believed that the Child Jesus left the imprint of His foot on a stone that is still preserved today.
According to the Coptic narrative, the Holy Family arrived in the area suffering from intense thirst, with no water available around them. At that moment, the Child Jesus touched a stone with His foot, causing water to spring forth from beneath it, while the footprint remained imprinted on the stone. Consequently, the place became known as “Pekha Isous,” meaning “The Heel of Jesus.” The stone bearing the footprint was rediscovered in April 1984.
The route of the Holy Family in Egypt includes nearly twenty-five archaeological and religious sites extending approximately 3,500 kilometers round trip, from Sinai to Assiut. Each site associated with the Holy Family contains religious monuments such as churches, monasteries, and wells, in addition to Coptic icons documenting the Family’s passage through these locations, according to the traditions recognized by the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt. This journey also represented a rich source of inspiration for Coptic art and liturgical traditions.
The journey of the Holy Family to Egypt is mentioned in the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, which states that the Holy Family remained in Egypt until Saint Joseph was informed in a dream of King Herod’s death and was instructed to return once again.
