كان ابن آوى عند المصريين القدماء أكثر من مجرد كائن يعيش في الصحراء. فقد ارتبط بعالم الموتى، وأصبح رمزًا للحماية والارشاد في رحلتهم إلى العالم الآخر.

ويُرجّح بعض الباحثون اليوم أن هذا الحيوان الذي صُوّر بهيئة ابن آوى هو الذئب الذهبي الأفريقي. وربما كان ظهوره بالقرب من المقابر سببًا في المكانة التي اكتسبها في معتقدات المصريين القدماء.

ارتبط ابن آوى بمعبودين بارزين وهما: وب واوت الذي يعني اسمه فاتح الطرق، وأنوبيس، حامي الموتى ومرشدهم إلى العالم الآخر.

وهكذا، تحوّل ابن آوى الذي اعتاد المصريون رؤيته في محيط المقابر إلى رمز للحماية والإرشاد، وأصبح جزءًا من واحدة من أكثر صور مصر القديمة ارتباطًا بالموت والعالم الآخر.

For ancient Egyptians, the jackal was more than a familiar creature of the desert. It came to hold a much deeper place in their beliefs, becoming a symbol of protection and a guide to the world beyond life.

The animal depicted as a jackal in ancient Egyptian art is often identified by some scholars today as the African golden wolf. Seen across Egypt and frequently around burial grounds, its presence may have influenced the powerful meaning it came to carry.

The jackal became closely associated with Wepwawet, the “Opener of the Ways,” and Anubis, the guardian who watched over the dead and guided them into the afterlife.

Through these deities, the jackal became an enduring symbol of protection and guidance through the afterlife, transforming a familiar creature of the Egyptian landscape into one of the most recognisable images of ancient Egyptian belief.

بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للحيوان، نبدأ هذا الشهر رحلة لاكتشاف مكانة الحيوانات في مصر القديمة.

من الحيوانات المألوفة إلى تلك التي قد تفاجئنا، كان لكل منها دور ومكانة مختلفة، تكشف لنا جانبًا من حياة المصريين القدماء وعاداتهم والعالم من حولهم.

طوال شهر أكتوبر، انضموا إلينا لنتعرّف على بعض حكاياتها، حيوانًا تلو الآخر.

Today is World Animal Day, and we’re marking it with a month-long exploration of animals in ancient Egypt.

في مثل هذا اليوم من عام ١٨٢٢، أعلن جان فرانسوا شامبليون عن اكتشاف غيّر فهمنا للحضارة المصرية القديمة: توصّله إلى مفتاح قراءة الكتابة الهيروغليفية.

كان حجر رشيد جزءًا أساسيًا من هذه القصة. وفي المتحف المصري الكبير، يمكنكم رؤية أثر آخر يشبهه في أمر لافت؛ إنه «مرسوم كانوب»، وقد نُقش نصه بثلاثة خطوط: الهيروغليفية والديموطيقية واليونانية.

بمقارنة نصوص حجر رشيد والتعرّف على الأسماء الملكية، بدأ الباحثون يفهمون أن العلامات الهيروغليفية لا تعبّر عن المعاني وحدها، بل قد تمثّل أصواتًا أيضًا. وهكذا عادت النصوص المصرية القديمة تُقرأ بعد قرون من الغموض.

في ذكرى هذا الاكتشاف، ندعوكم إلى التأمل في النقوش من حولكم في المتحف. فكل اسم ورمز يحمل جزءًا من حكاية أصبح بإمكاننا قراءتها من جديد.

On this day in 1822, Jean-François Champollion presented the breakthrough that helped unlock ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The Rosetta Stone played a vital role in that story. At the Grand Egyptian Museum, you can see another decree written in the same three scripts: hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek. It is the Canopus Decree.

By comparing the scripts of the rosetta stone and recognising royal names, scholars began to understand that hieroglyphs could represent sounds as well as ideas. Inscriptions that had been unreadable for centuries began to speak again.

Today, we mark that discovery by taking a closer look at the writing around us. The names, beliefs, and stories are still there, waiting for us to read them.
