Maajaam

Maajaam MAAJAAM is a project space in an old farm in Estonian countryside where art meets technology. MAAJAAM is operated by artist Timo Toots.

Substituting the urban environment with hilly rural landscape allows us to observe technology in it’s pure form and analyze it’s connections to us and the nature.

Maajaam is happy to be part of a publication _Off-Grid_ (2026) by Katažyna Jankovska, curator, writer, and researcher currently based between Rotterdam and Vilnius. This publication is the outcome of the Alex Adriaansens Residency 2025 at V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media.

_Off-Grid_ collects stories of protest infrastructures assembled in neighborhood yards and encrypted Telegram chats, internet cables stretched between apartment blocks, DIY practices, attempts to build a toaster from scratch, and a self-sustaining research capsule designed to operate for up to 120 days in isolation. This book moves across rural art institutions, repurposed power plants, exhibitions curated within forests and farmlands, and the early digital networks of the 1990s to explore what autonomy can mean in a world built on fragile, interconnected systems—and how much room for maneuver remains within them.

The book will be sold on the V2_ website (https://v2.nl/) from mid-April.

Soovitame lahti võtta Lõuna-Eesti Postimees, kus Kunstiasutuste Liidu juht Kadi-Ell Tähiste ja Eesti Kunstnike Liit president Maarin Ektermann kutsuvad kohalikke omavalitsusi panustama kunstile!

Olgu detailsemad kohaliku elu küsimused millised tahes, kuid on kaks teemat, millega pistetakse rinda pea kõikjal üle Eesti. Need on, kuidas vältida ääremaastumist ja kuidas meelitada piirkonda rohkem aktiivseid tööealisi inimesi, kes panustaksid omavalitsuse eelarvesse. Ehkki mingit võluvi...

The second Rural Art Connect residency “Drawing with Sound, Painting with Light” has come to an end! 🏁

In this workshop at Maajaam, participants explored the intersection of sound and light through hands-on experimentation with audio synthesis and laser projection. The workshop was initially set to be mentored by Derek Holzer, whose innovative work in sound and instrument design inspired the concept. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the workshop was led by Felix Granqvist – a Swedish visual artist and creative technologist and Markku Laskujärvi – a media artist from Helsinki.

A huge thank you to all participants for your creative energy and curiosity – and to our mentors Markku and Felix for sharing your knowledge, vision and inspiration!

RuralArtConnect is a collaborative project by Maajaam and Savvaļa, supporting rural art communities through a year-long program of workshops – two residencies will be held in Estonia, two in Latvia. Project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (Interreg) through the Interreg VI-A Estonia-Latvia Programme 2021-2027 (EST-LAT) and the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
