🔸 Sunday of Saint Mary of Egypt 🏜️𐃯 🔸
Today, the Fifth and final Sunday of Great Lent, the Church commemorates the Sunday of Saint Mary of Egypt, whose story rouses all sinners to repentance as we prepare to enter Holy Week.
This Sunday’s theme has 3 parts: first, that no amount of past sin can keep a truly repentant person from God; second, that Christ has come to call sinners to repentance (Lk 5:32); and third, that in the example of St Mary of Egypt, we see that it is never too late in life, or in Lent, to repent. Fleeing her parents at age 12, Mary went to Alexandria and gave herself over to every kind of licentiousness and immorality.
She lived as a harlot for 17 years, enticing many souls into the pit of perdition. Driven by insatiable passion, she often refused payment for her sexual favours. She ventured to the Holy Land for the veneration of the Life-giving Cross, seeking only to find in the large crowds of pilgrims more partners to satisfy her lust. But as she tried to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, an invisible force prevented her.
Overcome with shame, she wept and prayed outside before an icon of the Theotokos, vowing to renounce her worldly desires and propitiate God through repentance. Retuning to the church, she was able to enter with ease. After venerating the True Cross, she fled to the desert, where for 47 years she lived in extreme repentance, praying in solitude and entreating God for forgiveness. She survived for years on only 3 loaves of bread, and thereafter on wild herbs.
Near the end of her life, she met Zosima, a priest from a nearby monastery. After recounting her life story, she asked him to meet her the following year on Holy Thursday by the Jordan. When that time came, Zosima returned to the Jordan with the Holy Mysteries. Mary arrived on the opposite side of the river, and crossing herself, she miraculously walked across the water to meet him.
After receiving the Holy Mysteries, she asked him to return again the following year. When he did, he found her body and a message in the sand requesting burial, revealing that she had reposed immediately after receiving the Holy Mysteries the year before.
