NOTA SHOP / NOTA&design

Crossing the boundaries of craft, art, and design, NOTA SHOP is a shop based in Shigaraki, Japan. 'NOTA' comes from the Shigaraki dialect, one of Japan’s oldest ceramic production areas. It is a technical word used by ceramicists meaning ‘to slip’ that describes the process of attaching clay pieces to one another. Selecting items intended to be passed on to future generations, NOTA SHOP’s curated collection of lifestyle and design objects brings uniquely international artisans together. Each piece is connected by an element of human emotion, drawing on beauty and comfort as opposed to function alone.

NOTA SHOP’s namesake design label, NOTA&design, crafts handmade ceramics using a traditional Japanese approach. Located in the back of NOTA SHOP lies a large ceramic kiln where NOTA&design’s ceramics are fired. A place for mutual inspiration where stories and relationships are forged. NOTA&design explores the interconnectedness of people and matter. Like glue, the in-betweens of life bind us to one another, giving way to new ideas and friendships. NOTA&design was founded by designers Shunsuke and Kayoko Kato.

Introducing the exhibitors

Hakimono Sekizuka / Iwakura AA

Footwear Sekizuka by Singi Sekizuka designs and produces Japanese footwear that falls outside the traditional concept of a shoe. Using handiwork techniques passed down through generations, the result is uniquely beautiful yet practical. In a world that is in a state of constant change and flux, Sekizuka aims to produce items of substance that will remain unchanged in the future. His atelier is also home to Iwakura AA, a gallery that introduces various objects crafted in Japan and abroad.
