O - Overgaden Institut for Samtidskunst

O - Overgaden Institut for Samtidskunst Admission is always free to O—Overgaden.

Situated in the heart of Copenhagen, O—Overgaden has for more than three decades been among the leading non-profit art institutions in Denmark with an irreverent program displaying both emerging local and international voices of contemporary art. The program comprehends around 8-10 grand-scale exhibitions a year as well as a breadth of artist talks, performances, film screenings, seminars, and dis

cussions. Established in 1986 and situated by a canal in one of central Copenhagen’s historic neighborhoods, O—Overgaden occupies two large floors of a 19th century building which used to house a printing workshop.

~ CURRENT EXHIBITION ~ MORTEN KNUDSEN: “STICKY EYES (paintings, collages, drawings, and monuments)” ~

Please come by O—Overgaden to see Morten Knudsen’s exhibition “STICKY EYES (paintings, collages, drawings, and monuments)”.

Knudsen typically leaves an area of his canvas untouched or sparsely occupied. The painterly composition and empty spaces thus become motifs in themselves, evoking his son’s life and the aftermath—the paralysis and exhaustion of grief. In one black and grey piece, the artist repeats and distills the paintings’ omnipresent spots, imprinting a constant pounding—an almost aggressive penetration—into the canvas.

Entry to O—Overgaden is, as always, free.

Opening hours this weekend:
Saturday, Sunday: 11am–6pm

* Please note that due to O—Overgaden’s collaboration with HAY during 3daysofdesign, Morten Knudsen’s and coyote’s exhibitions are temporarily closed from 9–14 June and will reopen on Tuesday, 16 June!

~ CURRENT EXHIBITION ~ COYOTE: “UPSTAIRS” ~

Please come by O—Overgaden to see coyote’s large-scale exhibition “Upstairs”.

As a central part of their exhibition, coyote digs into the institutional surface, removing the institution’s fixed drywall and turning its innards into the exhibition’s main form: the long, communal table, which in turn could be considered the primary sculptural shape or symbol of any Western collective.

On the tables—lit by a series of readymade lamps borrowed from a local bar—we see images derived from the myths of the Copenhagen public sphere. Some site-specific to Christianshavn, an origin site for the Danish collectivist movement, others extending into the city and its subterrain.

Entry to O—Overgaden is, as always, free.

~ OPENING TONIGHT, Friday 22 May, 5-9pm ~ coyote “Upstairs”! ~

Please join us tonight for the opening of coyote’s new large-scale exhibition, ”Upstairs” at O—Overgaden.

As an artist collective, coyote toys with the (art) world’s commercialized preoccupation with the individual profile. As with their eponymous wandering nocturnal animal, coyote’s mythmaking is dispersed and elusive, examining how collaboration can instigate alternative spaces and stories; how the group, in and of itself, becomes a material—societal or public, performative or political.

The exhibition at O—Overgaden opens with a staged portrait of the anonymous group, part of an ongoing series. Reflections on the photograph’s surface (partly obscuring its central character) forefronts coyote’s coy mirroring, détournement, or destabilization of contemporary life’s incessant focus on “who’s who?”.

At the opening, O—Overgaden’s director, Rhea Dall, will give a short welcoming speech at 6pm. coyote has invited visual artist Annika Eriksson to re-stage her video work Copenhagen Postmen’s Orchestra from 1996. The performance will take place at 7pm. The bar will be open and entry to O—Overgaden is, as always, free. We can’t wait to see you!

~ OPENING TONIGHT, Friday 22 May, 5-9PM ~ Morten Knudsen “STICKY EYES (paintings, collages, drawings, and monuments)”! ~

Please join us tonight for the opening of Morten Knudsen’s new large-scale solo exhibition, ”STICKY EYES (paintings, collages, drawings, and monuments)” at O—Overgaden.

The tides of loss and their onerous repetition—daily, weekly, annually—flow through Morten Knudsen’s equally conceptual and material painterly practice.

The first thing that meets us in Knudsen’s exhibition is the series “E is for Everything.” E recurs throughout: the first letter of the artist’s son’s name and also the name of the antibody that took the child’s life. Somehow scoring and rationalizing both the life and the unbearable, the black-and-white series of serene, minimal letters roughly cut out from blackout curtains (collages) or carefully penciled on canvas (drawings) works as mantra or meditation, giving shape to the formation and loss of meaning. Repeating the E, the most frequently used letter in the alphabet and a cornerstone of daily communication, in what feels like a recognizable, modernist sans-serif font, the series points to how shared language is both as omnipresent and empty as “Everything.” The letters—shown in part via their absence, as stenciled holes in the works—reflect how the artist has been “running out of titles,” and “giving up on language.”

~ OPENING IN ONE WEEK: COYOTE ~

Please join us Friday 22 May from 5-9pm as O—Overgaden celebrates the opening of coyote's large-scale exhibition.

coyote is an artist collective established in 2017, which examines how working together can instigate alternative spaces and stories that engage with collectivity. In other words: how a group, in and of itself, becomes a material. In their first large-scale exhibition, coyote reflects on how communities today—often sparked by collective memory and popular media—reshape everyday city life, using specific geographic sites as scenographic settings, bleeding together fiction and reality.

~ OPENING IN ONE WEEK: MORTEN KNUDSEN ~

Please join us next Friday 22 May from 5-9pm, when O—Overgaden celebrates the opening of Morten Knudsen's large-scale solo exhibition.

The tides of loss and its onerous repetition—daily, weekly, annually—flow through Morten Knudsen’s painterly practice. Thick impasto surfaces, deep-hued colors, and a hint of fin de siècle. At first sight his flowery landscape paintings could be seen as romantic, nostalgic, yet they also reveal themselves as a surging virus: dirty, gnarly, uncontainable, and invasive.
