GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility

GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility GBIF provides the human and informatics infrastructure to enable primary biodiversity data to be made discoverable and accessible via the Internet.

GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility—is an international network and research infrastructure aimed at providing anyone, anywhere, open access to data about all life on Earth. More than 1.8 billion species occurrence records, ranging from museum specimens to amateur observations, are accessible via the GBIF data portal. The data published through GBIF are used for a wide variety of sci

entific applications, including modelling the potential spread of invasive alien species, projecting impacts of climate change on biodiversity and establishing priorities for the collection of wild crop relatives.

🔥 How will changing fire regimes reshape savannah vegetation?

A recent study uses 1,145 GBIF-mediated species occurrences to explore how woody plants in Brazil’s Cerrado respond to changing fire frequency, intensity and severity.

The researchers found that species with generalist strategies and greater growth-form flexibility are more likely to persist as fire regimes change. Traits such as resprouting ability, bark thickness and below-ground organs can also influence resilience. 🌳

As climate change alters fire regimes, understanding which species are most adaptable will be increasingly important for predicting and protecting the future of savannah ecosystems. 🌱

GBIF hosts billions of observations, but this time we're the observers 👀

GBIF has been officially accredited as an observer to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification! 🥳 This status allows GBIF to participate in key activities and initiatives of the convention and coordinate efforts to respond to UNCCD's global challenges and national needs.🐫

With this accreditation, GBIF now participated in all three including United Nations Biodiversity and UN Climate Change.

🧬 Sequence search is now available on GBIF.org! 🎉

This new feature allows users to search for nucleotide (DNA or RNA) sequences to discover occurrence records not only through names but also genetic sequences.

This functionality can be combined with additional filters such as target gene and sequence length for enhanced exploration of DNA data. 🔍

🐺 Hungry like the wolf: Mitigating Mexican wolf and livestock conflict

A recent study on endangered Mexican wolves found that diversionary feeding reduced livestock depredation by more than 40% in the three months after food was provided to wolf packs.

Researchers found that 85% of packs experienced fewer annual livestock losses, regardless of pack size, prey availability or livestock density. 🐏

The findings suggest that providing alternative food sources could be a promising tool for reducing human-wolf conflict and supporting Mexican wolf recovery.
