Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir, Sphere, 2021
Watercolour on handmade paper, 33 x 27 cm with frame
These two delicate works on paper offer a look into Icelandic sculptor Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir’s exploration of human existence. Known globally for her life-sized cast iron and bronze figures, these watercolors capture that same powerful sense of anonymity and isolation on a smaller, more fragile scale. 🎨🍂
Both pieces features a solitary, genderless figure rendered in earthy, clay-like tones. The body is paired with a perfectly circular, dark grey sphere. In one composition, the figure stands facing us, partially eclipsed by the dark orb. In the other, we see the back of the figure, with the sphere resting like heavy thoughts or an internal planetary system just above the shoulders. These works are a meditation on how we navigate our own internal worlds and the space around us. 🪐✨
Thórarinsdóttir’s thin, textured brushstrokes give the figures a raw, organic quality, making them look as if they were formed directly from the earth. The interaction between the human form and the geometric sphere creates a quiet tension, leaving the narrative entirely open to interpretation. 🌑🚶♂️
