Established in 1992, Françoise Heitsch’s gallery can be found in Maxvorstadt, in the heart of Munich. Initially, the artistic programme focussed on regional events and issues with artists predominantly from the local area of Munich exhibiting their works. This was to change in 2005 when the gallery’s focus shifted; ever since then, an increasing number of international artists have been displayed. Amongst others, the gallery exhibits works by Greek artists; since 2012, Turkish artists have also been included into the gallery programme. A strong personal relationship to these regions is tangible due to Françoise Heitsch’s own cultural heritage, which can be directly traced back to these two countries. This was also one of the reasons why she decided to support and make known Greek and Turkish art to Munich’s art circles. It is most important to Françoise Heitsch to present the intercultural dialogue and exchange between her adopted homeland Munich and her own cultural Greek and Turkish background. The artists represented by Françoise Heitsch work with different media, share, however, an undogmatic approach towards contemporary issues. The exhibited artworks reflect individuality, truth and current events and also reveal themselves to the gallery visitor as tools for present-day’s understanding and communication.

NEWS FROM PHILIPP GUFLER

Philipp Gufler’s solo exhibition CONFESSING WEAKNESS is opening on Friday, July 12 from 6 pm at Traklhaus in Salzburg.

On view fron July 13 - August 31, 2024.
Curated by Sophie Goltz and Niklas Koscher as part of the International Summer Academy Salzburg.

FINISSAGE
Saturday, August 31, 12:30 pm
Film screening Conversation with Albert Knoll, 2023 by Philipp Gufler followed by a talk between Philipp Gufler and Conny Felice (HOSI Salzburg).

”The solo exhibition Confessing Weakness brings together some of Gufler’s central works, in which – beyond simple attributions of roles and identity – he embarks on a careful examination of the socio-cultural mechanisms, as well as historical and political events, that stand for nonconformist sexuality and gender awareness. Naturalised concepts of modes of life become unsettled, weakened, and fall apart, when Philipp Gufler exposes unknown narratives and perspectives through his many years of working with self-organised archives such as the Forum Q***r Archive Munich (FQAM).

In his works, Gufler sees history and identity as dynamic concepts of fluctuating inscriptions and interrelations. Central to his praxis is a personal approach which, in his activist artistic exploration, deals specifically with the contradictions in the annalistic documentation of events and historical personalities. His sensitive approach in the artistic process evinces close understanding of diverse experiences, enabling him to reflect and expose the motives behind established, long-since internalised narratives. He also negotiates his own body as the subject of numerous inscriptions, and thus the risk of his own vulnerability.“

NEWS FROM PHILIPP GUFLER: Last days to see Philipp Gufler‘s solo exhibition ”Dis/Identification“ at Kunsthalle Mainz! Please join them for the finissage and book release on June 16, 2024. The artist is present. The exhibition will be accompanied by Philipp Gufler’s first monograph published by DISTANZ, including texts by Yasmin Afschar, Karolina Kühn, Sandro Weilenmann and Louwrien Wijers. In his largest solo exhibition to date, starting with a new video installation entitled ”The Beginning of Identification, and its End“ Gufler offers a survey of his creative output of recent years. It does not just tell us the “hi/stories of heroes”. Gufler’s approach always leaves scope for the dark sides and the controversies. The focus is on identification but also on “disidentification” and thus on the limits of q***r categories of identification. Opening: Thursday, 7.09. at 7 pm

For the exhibition "On Listening" Philipp Gufler, artist and long-time active member of the Forum Q***res Archiv München realized a cinematic portrait of Albert Knoll's decades of archival and research work with a focus on Albert Knoll's self-initiated interviews with witnesses. Albert Knoll is a founding member of the Forum and has been on the board ever since. This new short film, together with selected archive material, provides a very personal and deep insight into Knoll's historical work as well as his commitment to the association with a focus on oral history(s) and witnessing.

Opening and Talk with Monika Bayer-Wermuth: Saturday, 9.09. at 11 am
09.09.2023 – 15.03.2024

Starting in September 2023, Amsterdam and Munich-based artist Philipp Gufler will occupy the space with a new work. With his signature approach, he recontextualizes q***r history in his often textile-based works. Rather than depicting complex overlays as in his silkscreen prints on fabrics and mirrors, for “Urning” he uses the visual impact of the medium of the flag.
