Tsar Peter the Great from Leipzig University art collection is on display in the MdbK’s permanent exhibition!
The portrait of Tsar Peter I the Great (1672–1725) from our collection now hangs right next to a portrait of the Leipzig painter David Hoyer (1667–1720), painted by Johann Kupetzky (1667–1740). This is a fascinating juxtaposition! Why? Hoyer is depicted in his studio, albeit as a musician playing a lute; only at second glance can a painter’s palette be discerned in the foreground. To the left behind him stands a painting on an easel: this is a very similar version of precisely this portrait of the Tsar! Our portrait is also believed to be by Kupetzky. But if that's the case, why is this painting on the easel behind the sitter? Kupetzky was David Hoyer’s teacher. Perhaps Hoyer, as a pupil, was asked to make a copy, or was the painting the result of a collaboration between the two? Several copies of this portrait of the Tsar exist, so Hoyer may well have been commissioned to produce copies as well. In any case, it is a fascinating discovery!
