Momentum Worldwide

Momentum Worldwide Time-based Art: Video, Performance, New Media, Sound, and so much more... MOMENTUM is a non-profit platform for time-based art, active worldwide since 2010.
(36)

Launched in Australia as a parallel event to the 17th Biennale of Sydney, MOMENTUM subsequently moved to Berlin’s iconic Kunstquartier Bethanien Art Center in 2011, with an on-going program composed of local and international Exhibitions, Artist and Curator Residencies, Video Art in Public Space Initiatives, Digital Archives of the Performance and Education Programs, and a growing Collection of in

ternational artworks. Positioned as both a local and global platform perpetually seeking innovative answers to the question ‘What is Time-Based Art?’, MOMENTUM serves as a bridge joining professional art communities, irrespective of institutional and national borders. Working on a model of international partnerships and co-operations, MOMENTUM supports artists and artistic innovation, providing an environment for professional development where artists can work, live, research, create, experiment, and exhibit while immersed in the vibrant cultural communities of Berlin. Visual languages continue to evolve in concert with the technologies which drive them, and it is the role of visual artists to push the limits of these languages. As the world speeds up, and time itself seems to flow faster, MOMENTUM provides a program focused on the growing diversity and relevance of time- based practices, exploring how time-based art reflects the digitization of our societies and the resulting cultural change – a question increasingly relevant in our (post)pandemic age. Since its inception in 2010, MOMENTUM has presented over 250 exhibitions, artist residencies, education events, and a diversity of related programming worldwide, showing close to 700 international artists. Parallel to Raúl Cerrillo's fabulous exhibition "New Mythologies" at the Mexican Embassy in Berlin, we invite you to come meet the artist and see the new work he's been making here in Berlin!
"In my last series of paintings I finished in Mexico, I depicted historical and mythical characters like Jesus and Sisyphus, Quetzalcoatl and the Pipila, playing together to create mythical contemporary narratives, imagining new possibilities of reality and a better world. In that particular moment, I realized that I was using syncretism as an instrument of hope and peace and now at the MOMENTUM-LAGOS art residency, continuing with this idea, I will be painting a large scale homage to super-hero children playing with yo-yos and using technology, and will be making installations that talk about tools/intelligence and parables/emotions." – Raúl Cerrillo

Raúl Cerrillo: New Mythologies opening TODAY at 6-8pm at the Mexican Embassy in Berlin!
The exhibition parallel to Raúl Cerrillo's Artist Residency at MOMENTUM-LAGOS:
New Mythologies
OPENING: 28 August @ 6-8pm
EXHIBITION: 29 August – 11 October 2023
Opening Hours: Monday – Friday @ 9-5pm
@ The Cultural Institute of Mexico in Germany
Embassy of Mexico
Klingelhöferstraße 3, 10785 Berlin

With his paintings, sculptures and installations, the Mexican artist Raúl Cerrillo builds a bridge between the past of our ancient cultures and the future that can be expected from today’s technological age. The syncretism expressed in his works speaks of the importance of blending different cultures and traditions to connect with ourselves and with other people. In this context, he proposes new myths and archetypes to help us find our own way.

"My work playfully combines formal concepts of painting and sculpture – such as abstraction, perspective, figure, and ground – with traditional textile techniques and practices – most notably weaving and natural dyeing. TRUTHTRUSTTREES

Bowie warned in 1972: we have five years.
The climate clock is ticking,
counting down to anthropocene.

At the Verwalterhaus, by the entrance of the St. Marien-St. Nikolai cemetery, a story takes shape between past and prologue. We see majestic trees and resting graves, while across from us are shopping malls and big box stores—a tidal wave of identical details encroaching from Alexanderplatz. Yet, the ghosts resist and push back. Five years was so many years ago. We’re on borrowed time. Mankind can no longer act with impunity. TreesTrustTruth is an exhibition of ten artists from around the world linking the relentless destruction of the climate, nature and women’s bodies to the ticking clock of unsustainability.

WE FACE A CHOICE: consume more, add more cars and fossil fuels, shop ourselves to death, hate those we are tasked to love and watch tides rise. OR become sustainable, open green spaces, see others as ourselves, use non-polluting transportation, treasure all people and end wars. When does it change? When we demand it. This is the decisive task.

Come celebrate the trees. Gardens are the future of cities! Decarbonize! Unplug! Destroy cars! Make art! We can do a lot. Celebrate life under the drone of climate doom! Gaia is calling.

OPENING RECEPTION:
Thursday July 27 18.00-22.00
Movable performance by Patrick Jambon 18.00-20.00 followed by a musical intervention by Andreas Templin at 20.30. TEMPLIN Extended Piano (Drone/ Doom.)

Wednesday August 2. 18.00-20.00

SILO / Semillera de Memorias presents:

For her Artist Residency at MOMENTUM-LAGOS Berlin, Laura Valencia Lozada creates a graphic exploration of an encounter of narratives between women who work or have lived in the Tlatelolco neighborhood in Mexico City and the Kreuzberg neighborhood in Berlin. The stories Lozada collects from women in Kreuzberg will be added to her ongoing project, the SILO / Semillera de Memorias Tlatelolcas archive, which explores the construction of memories of women living or working in neighbourhoods where social movements and spaces of resistance against patriarchy, colonisation or capitalism have taken place. The aim is to create an intergenerational dialogue between the participants and a reading of their memories from a non-linear time.

How are individual and collective memories created?
Who writes the history of our places, of our objects, of our encounters?

Lozada initiates a dialogue between Tlatelolco and Kreuzberg, the district of Berlin where MOMENTUM-LAGOS is located. Kreuzberg and Tlatelolco coincide and reflect each other, as both places have a long history of social, labour, occupy, feminist and anti-racist movements. By constructing a paradigm of parallels between Kreuzberg and Tlatelolco, Lozada aims to draw on the context and knowledge of the city of Berlin, which has been the nerve center of a profound reflection on the study of memories and its relationship between memory and the city, art and creation.

In SILO, the elaboration of memories is proposed as a constant process of creation in the present, arising from the lived experiences of its protagonists as a human right to know what happened, and compiling subjective, affective accounts, with different versions of the event and unstable forms of memory.

The 8 artists in this exhibition integrate the ancestral cultures of Mexico into their artistic discourses, creating through their work a conceptual bridge that unites tradition with contemporary language, and creates a dialogue between the native cultures of Mexico and contemporary artistic production in Berlin. All of the selected artists work in a transdisciplinary way, focusing on installations. The works that make up this exhibition establish a series of timeless and complex relationships. They dialogue with each other through conceptual themes such as the critique of modernity and progress, decolonialism, the Anthropocene and ancestral cosmogonies. The complexity of the artist’s approaches is complemented by a view on Berlin and its own cultural hybridization. The exhibition shows ancestral images re-signified in contemporaneity, historical, mythical and mystical characters in a timeless and continuous dialogue, sacred places in the process of extinction, visions of an altered past and an uncertain future. Objects and sounds deconstructed and returned to their place of origin. Resistance and negotiation.

TOMORROW artist .shepard is hosting a book reading gathering for what has been called "the most realistic yet least depressing end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it guide out there" (Foreword Reviews):
I Want a Better Catastrophe by Andrew Boyd.
Free. Doors open at 6:30, show at 7:00.

Please join us!

We will read some passages, laugh some dark laughs, sign some books, gnash some teeth, explore some of our possible futures via oversized flowcharts....not necessarily in that order. The evening will NOT be a boring book reading. It will be interactive, participatory, fun; it'll be a chance to come together and -- aided by gallows humor and some unusual prompts -- reflect on some of the big questions before us.
To tackle the climate emergency, we need each other; we need solidarity and laughter and all the rest. We hope to see you there.
**Even if you're not able to attend, you may order a copy of the book now (and maybe an extra one for a friend :) **

Guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Peter Krieger (UNAM, Mexico City): Contemporary Art in the Anthropocene - The geo-aesthetic intervention STRATUM by Mexican artist Luis Carrera-Maul
This talk addresses the epistemic potential of images and artworks in contemporary scientific and political analyses of the critical state of planet Earth; a contribution of image science to the Anthropocene debate. Analysis of images of the urbanized, contaminated, eroding surface of the earth is integrated into research on the "geological turn," which expands ecological and geological research as a subject of the humanities and art production.
This concept, based on Alexander von Humboldt, is explained using the example of ecocritical contemporary art exhibition STRATUM, by Mexican-German artist Luis Carrera-Maul in Mexico City in 2022. STRATUM materialized an imagination of posthuman future of the destroyed megalopolitan landscape. The exhibition invited reflection on the renegotiation of the relationship between city and nature in the Anthropocene.

Artist Luis Carrera-Maul is present for a discussion following the lecture. Moderation: Prof. Dr. Miriam Oesterreich

Our Story

MOMENTUM is a non-profit platform for time-based art, active worldwide since 2010, with headquarters in Berlin at the Kunstquartier Bethanien. MOMENTUM’s program is composed of local and international Exhibitions, Artist and Curator Residencies, Video Art in Public Space Initiatives, a Performance Archive, an Education Archive, and a growing Collection. By enabling Exhibition, Discussion, Research, Creation, Collection, and Exchange, MOMENTUM is a platform which challenges the notion of time-based art in the context of both historical and technological development. Visual languages continue to evolve in concert with the technologies which drive them, and it is the role of visual artists to push the limits of these languages. As the world speeds up, and time itself seems to flow faster, MOMENTUM provides a program focused on the growing diversity and relevance of time-based practices, exploring how time-based art reflects the digitization of our societies and the resulting cultural change. Positioned as both a local and global platform, MOMENTUM serves as a bridge joining professional art communities, irrespective of institutional and national borders. Working on a model of international partnerships and cooperations, MOMENTUM supports artists and artistic innovation, bringing to Berlin work by international artists that would not otherwise have been seen here, and ensuring an international audience for exceptional local artists. The key ideas driving MOMENTUM are: Cooperation, Exchange, Education, Innovation, and Inspiration. MOMENTUM continuously seeks innovative answers to the question ‘What is time-based art?’. Having been founded in Australia by Dr. Rachel Rits-Volloch as a parallel event to the 17 Biennale of Sydney in May 2010, MOMENTUM moved to Berlin to a permanent space in the thriving Art Center Kunstquartier Bethanien in January 2011. Since its inception, MOMENTUM has presented over 70 Exhibitions showing the work of over 500 artists, as well as nearly 60 Education Events filmed and archived on the website, in addition to an ongoing program of Artistic Research Residencies which has so far hosted over 30 international artists. MOMENTUM is also proud to feature the works of 69 artists in the MOMENTUM Performance Archive and Collection. MOMENTUM Exhibitions: Committed to supporting artists and artistic innovation, MOMENTUM works with both local and global artists, from students to superstars. With an ongoing exhibition program active both in Berlin and abroad, in collaboration with museums and institutions in our global network, MOMENTUM brings to Berlin work by international artists that would not otherwise have been seen here, and ensures an international audience for exceptional local artists. MOMENTUM plays an active role in the Berlin art community and works with exceptional Berlin-based artists to enable them to make new work for a global audience. MOMENTUM generates exchange, sharing resources, and broadening audiences by providing links and communications between international networks of artists and institutions. MOMENTUM’s major exhibitions include MOMENTUM Sydney (2010, Sydney Australia); A Wake: Still Lives and Moving Images (2011, MOMENTUM Berlin); the Works On Paper Performance Series (2013, 2014, 2015, MOMENTUM, Berlin); Thresholds (2013, Collegium Hungaricum, Berlin; 2014, TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art, Szczecin, Poland); PANDAMONIUM: Media Art from Shanghai (2014, MOMENTUM, Berlin); Fragments of Empires (2014-2015, MOMENTUM, Berlin); BALAGAN!!! Contemporary Art from the Former Soviet Union and Other Mythical Places (2015, MOMENTUM / Külhaus, / Stiftung Brandenburger Tor at Max Liebermann Haus, Berlin); Ganz Grosses Kino (2016, Kino Internationale, Berlin); HERO MOTHER: Contemporary Art by Post-Communist Women Rethinking Heroism (2016, MOMENTUM, Berlin), amongst many others. MOMENTUM AiR: MOMENTUM’s Artist-in-Residence program is designed to further the mission of MOMENTUM as a global platform for time-based art, focused on the growing diversity and relevance of time-based practices. The MOMENTUM Residency is dedicated to artistic research into time and temporality in visual language. Open to artists working in a variety of media and practices, MOMENTUM AiR is a process-based residency designed to facilitate research as much as production of new work, while providing a framework for building professional networks and cooperations within Berlin’s thriving art community. MOMENTUM AiR hosts up to 3 artists or curators at a time for a suggested period of 3 months. MOMENTUM InsideOut: With this initiative for video art in public space, MOMENTUM turns the museum and gallery inside out by bringing museum quality art onto the streets for all to see. MOMENTUM_InsideOut has taken place across multiple locations in Berlin, as well as internationally, making video art and performance widely accessible to new audiences and building curiosity and public interest in contemporary art. MOMENTUM Collection: The MOMENTUM Collection was established in 2010 through the generosity of a small group of artists who’s work was shown at MOMENTUM Sydney in May 2010. The donations of their works constituted their investment in MOMENTUM’s then-nascent model as a global and mobile platform for showing time-based art. Six years later, the MOMENTUM Collection has expanded from its original roster of 10 to 34 artists. The Collection represents a cross-section of over 120 outstanding artworks in a diversity of media: video, performance, photography, painting, collage, and text. It ranges from some of the most established to emerging artists representing 22 countries worldwide: Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, Turkey, the UK, and the US. The growth of the Collection reflects the growth of MOMENTUM itself. While we develop and nurture our relationships with these artists, we continually endeavor to bring their work to new audiences worldwide through our online platform, as traveling exhibitions, and through educational initiatives such as the year-long initiative Time_Art_Impact Dialogues with Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai. MOMENTUM Performance Archive: MOMENTUM's focus on time-based generates an active performance program. MOMENTUM is committed to documenting and archiving all the performances we commission, produce, and host. This archive is made available to the public as an educational resource and on our online platform. The Performance Archive also forms a resource for international exhibitions of MOMENTUM's Collection and Education resources. MOMENTUM Education: Education and discussion are a key aspect of MOMENTUM's programming. Each Exhibition and Artist Residency at MOMENTUM is accompanied by a discursive program of Artist Talks, Symposia, Panel Discussions, Workshops or Kunst Salon events, which bring selected art professionals together with the general public to discuss the show and its broader implications. All discursive programming is documented on video and, along with the MOMENTUM Collection and Performance Archive, are archived and made available on our website and social media as an educational resource. MOMENTUM is committed to creating an educational exchange between the general public, cultural institutions, and the international art community by actively developing programming which shares its educational resources with the public in Berlin and beyond. MOMENTUM Press: MOMENTUM's independent publishing branch works hand in hand with our commitment to documentation, archiving, and education. MOMENTUM produces catalogues for each exhibition, published either in print or as E-catalogs. MOMENTUM also maintains catalogues of our growing Collection and Performance Archive.
