Bettina Heinen-Ayech: "Summer Storm in Algeria", 1971

What a life — and what a painting! Bettina Heinen-Ayech from Solingen attracted attention as early as the age of 18, when she was invited to participate in the first major international art exhibition of the young Federal Republic of Germany. Not bad for a start! After training at the art academies of Cologne, Munich and Copenhagen, and an extended stay in Egypt, she fell under the spell of the desert and the light of the Orient.

In 1963 she moved to Algeria to join her husband Abdelhamid Ayech in his hometown of Guelma — and until her death in 2020, Algeria and Solingen alternated as the centre of her life. The dry air in Guelma transformed her technique entirely: the watercolours would not run as in Europe but dried instantly, so she began placing strong colours together like a mosaic, stroke by stroke — and the result is exactly what you see here: that electrifying, almost supernatural summer sky over the Algerian hills, the golden fields crackling with energy, the olive trees holding their ground.

She once said: "I have time to paint, time to think, time to read — in short: time to live." You can feel every bit of that freedom in this painting.

Während des Ausstellungsumbaus vom 28. Mai bis zum 5. Juni bleibt die Ausstellungshalle geschlossen. Das Atelierhaus und der Museumsgarten sind geöffnet. Der reguläre Eintrittspreis beträgt in dieser Zeit 4 Euro statt 5 Euro.

Das Museum ist regulär geöffnet: donnerstags bis samstags von 14 bis 17 Uhr, sonntags von 11 bis 17 Uhr!

**MasterpieceMonday at euroart – Carl Trägårdh: "Countryside near Grez-sur-Loing", 1889**

Carl Ludvig Trägårdh (1861–1899) was a Swedish painter who studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm — and like so many of his compatriots, he eventually found his way to the magical little village of Grez-sur-Loing in France. In the 1880s, Grez was buzzing with Scandinavian artists, who formed the largest community of painters there — drawn by the soft light, the gentle river Loing and the peaceful countryside. You can feel all of that in today's painting.

Prominent artists such as Carl Larsson, August Strindberg, Anders Zorn and Julia Beck were among those who gathered in Grez — and Trägårdh was right there among them. His painting shows a French peasant woman watering her cow by the riverbank, the village church just visible in the distance. It is a quiet, unassuming scene — and yet it radiates warmth, light and a deep sense of stillness.

Tragically, Trägårdh died in Paris in 1899 at just 37 years of age, leaving behind a body of work that captures the spirit of the Grez colony at its most golden. This painting is now part of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm — a well-deserved place for such a gem! 🌿
