Galerie 21 is gallery of the artist residency "Vorwerk" placed in Karolinenviertel, Hamburg. It is organised by the artists that live in the house. The house was built in 1866 hosts 24 artists of different kinds as sculpture, painting, film, mixed media, music, performance, literature photography and many more. The gallery is the platform to present the internal artists newest work but also to inv

ite international artists to present theire pieces. The gallery is supported by the Kulturbehörde Hamburg.

Some of this is true. The exhibition Among False Narratives allows to physically step into the archives of the two artists Mehdi Görbüz and Rogine Moradi. Their respective identities are explored through mythological figures, seemingly mundane objects and aesthetics, and personal memories. Fiction and lived experience, facts and untruths, form a web through which the gaze is both veiled and expanded.

Mehdi Görbüz engages with neocolonial narratives, their effects on social self-understanding, and on what is not perceived as „self.“ „Home“ is a central term in his work. Among other things, he investigates private spaces in their function of preserving a marginalized identity or of deliberately distancing oneself from it. The works are seductive and repellent at once; stubbornly yet humorously distorted, they negotiate camp aesthetics, good taste, tradition, and alienation. Out of the interplay of video, sculpture, and (sound) installation grow new and old myths, and with them, possibilities for situating oneself among already existing stories.

Rogine Moradi explores how an individual or shared archive can serve as a means of self-affirmation and, ultimately, self-preservation. In physical or acoustic form, she assembles her own archive — anachronistic and detached from the rules of traditional truth-finding. This practice opens up ways to gain self-determination over one’s own existence and the narrative projected onto oneself. Just as fiction relates to reality and carries within itself a space for it, fiction in turn also shapes lived reality. The archive places things on equal footing, puts them into context, and thereby bears witness to their past and future. Rogine works predominantly in sculpture and installation, and recently released her latest album, breathe down my neck, as rogine. On the day of the finissage, she will perform live at 7:00 pm.

Their individual works come together to question systems of dominance and explore the broad notion of power. Challenging traditional concepts of ownership and property in the very exhibition space, Lagrange, Waldmüller, and Yunesi approach their particular interests through individual pieces before coming together in a collaborative display. The works explore notions of silencing through standardisation, imposed narratives, and the violence of the faceless administrative apparatus.
