Ausstellungshalle für internationale Gegenwartskunst Die Lothringer 13 Halle gehört zu den den Kunsträumen der Stadt München.

Seit 1980 befindet sich die Halle für zeitgenössische Kunst in den Räumen eines ehemals industriell genutzten Areals in der Lothringer Straße 13 im Stadtteil Haidhausen. Auf einer Ausstellungsfläche von 700 qm werden von wechselnden Kurator*innen Ausstellungen und Projekte mit lokalen sowie internationalen Künstler*innen realisiert. Seit 2020 wird die Lothringer 13 Halle von Lisa Britzger und Luzi

Gross in Zusammenarbeit mit Anna Lena von Helldorff kuratiert. Ihr Programm ab Juni 2020 setzt Schwerpunkte auf kollaborative, kontextspezifische und transdisziplinäre Positionen. Künstlerische Praxis, ihre Vermittlung und Reflexion sollen als Impuls für die gemeinschaftliche Aushandlung von Gegenwart wirken.

Quilt Workshop

🎨 Photo documentation of the "Community Paint & Quilt" Workshop that took place in June.

As part of the exhibition program for “Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich,” Fépar – Living Room for the BIPoC community & friends – was invited to co-lead the workshop together with curators Sophie Eisenried🧚🏼‍♀️🍉 from HABIBI KIOSK & Zakirah Rabaney from Lothringer 13 Halle.

The public, friends, children & neighbors painted patterns, drawing inspiration from the artwork of Zimbabwean guest artists of Artist in Residence Munich Grace Nyahangare Prudence Grace Nyahangare & Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude gresham. They were in Munich as part of a residency in celebration the 30th anniversary of the Munich-Harare sister cities partnership.

The textile paintings were then sewn together by Sophia O'David into a communal quilt that was presented as part of the exhibition “Democratic Encounters.” Afterwards, Fépar used it for their “Summer Community Picnic & Sound” at Lenbachhaus’s “Bunter Garten Ciao" earlier this month.

Installation views of the exhibition "Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich" that took place from 19 June until 31 July 2026 in Forecast at Lothringer 13 Halle.

The Zimbabwean artists Miriro Mwandiambira Miriro Mwandiambira , Grace Nyahangare Prudence Grace Nyahangare and Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude gresham presented the outcomes of their residency in Munich.

Their artworks examined the conditions and contradictions of democratic life through feminist perspectives, infrastructural networks, as well as through the tension between concentrated power and collective powerlessness. For these artists, exploring democracy as a series of encounters produced both personal and thought-provoking ideas that considered how the political is felt in the everyday.

The exhibition and residency was a cooperation between First Floor Gallery, Artist in Residence Munich, and the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Munich-Harare sister cities partnership.

WORKSHOP - Infrastructure & Cultural Work
Friday, 14 August, 9am–12pm
National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare

Calling all cultural workers in and around Harare, including artists, curators, musicians, designers, writers, arts administrators and gallerists!
Through conversations and activities in our workshop, we will ask:
How do we define infrastructure in physical, social and emotional terms?
What infrastructure, networks, resources and conditions do you need to work and create?
We will share our experiences, exchange ideas and reimagine the support that artists and cultural workers need to thrive.

Spaces are limited, so please RSVP via WhatsApp/Instagram by Thursday, 13 August, 8pm.
The workshop will be facilitated by Georgina Maxim, Zakirah Rabaney and Kalas Liebfried.

Today, 31 July, marks the final day of the initial chapter of Antifascism: Now. in Munich.

As this first chapter comes to a close, we look back through this short film by Mykyta Gibalenko, capturing moments from the project’s three-day opening symposium (31 January–2 February 2026)—a gathering of lectures, performances, screenings, concerts, and workshops that marked the beginning of this transnational project.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all the artists, contributors, partners, and audiences who became part of this chapter. Above all, we thank our team at Lothringer 13 Halle and Goethe-Institut, whose commitment, care, and extraordinary work carried the project through these first six months and made its Munich iteration possible.

We are saying goodbye to Munich, but not to Antifascism: Now. Conceived as a transnational, multi-year project unfolding across 13 chapters with a particular focus on Southeastern and Eastern Europe, it now continues beyond the city where it began.

On Saturday night, 11 July, the Carriers × CINEVAN took place at Sinti-Roma-Platz in Westend.

Local filmmaker and artist Patrik Thomas transformed the square into a mobile, open-air cinema with his CINEVAN. The programme featured three short films: Atide (2022) by .f, Wesley Swims (2024) by Adrian Oeser, and 15 Minutes (2022) by Sejad Ademaj. Together, they centre the lived realities of young Sinti* and Roma* people in Germany.

The evening also featured a live conversation between curator Zakirah Rabaney director Daniela Magnani Hüller, and the protagonist of the film Atide Jasarova, followed by a discussion with the audience about the film and what it means to identify as both a young Bavarian and Romani woman. The night opened with an introduction by Radoslav Ganev (RomAnity), who spoke about the history of Munich‘s Sinti* and Roma* communities.

Sinti-Roma-Platz is more than a place of remembrance. As part of Antifascism: Now., CINEVAN and Carriers reimagined this public space as a public sphere, bringing the stories, perspectives, and present-day realities as well as the history of young Sinti* and Roma* people into view.

Thank you to the neighbours, friends, families, communities, and passers-by who came to support this important event. We hope to return in summer 2027!

Carriers was curated by f_li Kalas Liebfried Zakirah Rabaney and Patrik Thomas as part of the programmes accompanying the exhibitions Antifascism: Now. at Lothringer 13 Halle (30 January – 31 July 2026) and Carrying at Museum Brandhorst (14 May – 8 November 2026).

Final week to experience the exhibition “Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich”, on view until Friday, 31 July 2026, alongside “Antifascism: Now.”

A heartfelt thank you to the artists Miriro Mwandiambira _miriro, Grace Nyahangare Prudence Grace Nyahangare, and Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude gresham for the enriching conversations, hard work, and trust throughout the exhibition-making process.

A special thank you also goes to First Floor Gallery co-director Marcus Tawanda Gora and Rory Tsapayi, Assistant to the Curator of the 61st Venice Biennale, In Minor Keys, for leading an intimate workshop with the artists (see the last slide). These exchanges addressed the ways in which democratic encounters should be an ongoing process to stimulate productive global partnerships and mutual learning.

Although Friday, 31 July marks the final day to experience the exhibition, we hope the connections forged during Miriro, Grace, and Gresham's time in Munich will continue long after.

OPEN CALL – THREE TRANSDISCIPLINARY RESIDENCIES
"Curating Journalism" 
Lothringer 13 Halle, in cooperation with Artist in Residence Munich is launching an open call for three transdisciplinary residencies for professional cultural workers whose work is situated at the intersection of art, journalism, and curating.
 As part of the research and exhibition project "Curating Journalism", residents will develop an independent project engaging with investigative research, documentation, archival practice, publishing, or new forms of critical public discourse.   We are looking for proposals that explore how journalistic, curatorial, and artistic methods can be brought together and transformed within the public sphere.
 The three-month residency will take place from 8 January to 26 March 2027.  Residents will receive a monthly stipend, production funding, accommodation, travel support, and a workspace at Lothringer 13 Halle. The residency projects will be presented as part of Curating Journalism at Lothringer 13 Halle.
