Hier in diesem Haus wurde am 7. August 1869 unter Führung von August Bebel und Wilhelm Liebknecht der Gründungskongress der Sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei (SDAP) eröffnet. Die eigentliche Gründung fand dann einen Tag später, am 8.August im Hotel „Zum Mohren“ statt. Das Hotel „Zum Mohren“ wurde bereits vor dem zweiten Weltkrieg abgerissen. Der „Goldene Löwe“ aber hat die Zeit überdauert und wu
rde zum Symbol für die Gründung der SDAP. Nach der Vereinnahmung durch das SED – Regime erfolgte mit der Wiedergründung der Sozialdemokratischen Partei in Eisenach im Herbst 1989 auch die Rückbesinnung auf alte sozialdemokratische Traditionen. Im April 1991 wurde die August – Bebel – Gesellschaft e.V. gegründet und übernahm im Herbst 1991 die Trägerschaft für die Gedenkstätte. Anliegen der August-Bebel-Gesellschaft ist es, die Tradition der Gedenkstätte zu wahren, sie einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zu erschließen und mit Veranstaltungen, Seminaren und Buchlesungen einen Beitrag zur politischen Bildung zu leisten. The "Goldener Löwe" memorial in Eisenach is one of the most important sites in the history of German Social Democracy. It was here in this building that the founding congress of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) was opened on August 7, 1869, under the leadership of August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht. The August-Bebel-Gesellschaft aims to preserve the tradition of the memorial, to make it accessible to a broad public and to contribute to political education with events, seminars and book readings.
