What a beautiful evening yesterday! ❤️✨

Yesterday, MER HAM BUT – WE ARE MANY premiered at our museum. Moving, vibrant, full of music, humour and joy!

The evening opened with internationally renowned Sinti violinist Markus Reinhardt Markus Reinhardt sharing a deeply personal reflection on what home means to him.

The production was developed with The Beautiful Minds a theatre collective from Bonn known for its participatory and biographical approach. For this production, a group of Sinti and Roma from Cologne and Budapest share intimate stories about love, relationships, family memories and belonging.

Music, films and personal stories intertwine. There is eating, drinking, laughter, storytelling and, above all, lots of music!

For a few days, our exhibition return is transformed too, with films and elements of the performance becoming part of the exhibition space. Even the Black Saint Sara (Sara la Kali), revered by many Sinti and Roma, has found a temporary home here.

Next performance this Friday, October 23, at 7:30 pm in the exhibition Return.
Don’t miss it! ❤️

Fragments of Belonging | Collective Art Workshop

What does “home” feel like to you? Memory isn’t a complete picture—it lives in the details: a texture, a pattern, a splash of color, or the detail of a loved object.

In this interactive workshop, you’ll translate a personal fragment of memory into a mini painting. Through colours, images, and fragments of our own real or imagined worlds, we’ll create small artworks that tell bigger stories about what connects us to people and places.

Let’s paint our own fragment of belonging, and discover how our individual stories can come togetherp to create something collective.

✨ No painting experience needed—just bring a memory and some curiosity!

⏱ Duration: 1.5 – 2 Hours

Werkstatt return - Weaving Connects with Kristina Hopp

⏱️ 22 October I 2 – 5 pm I Werkstatt return

Every Thursday the return workshop is supervised by Kristina Hopp. Come along, get creative and try your hand at weaving. Kristina is there to support you if you like.

Weaving is one of the most widespread techniques in human history. In return, it becomes a collective practice.

You can contribute to a shared woven work that grows and changes over the course of the exhibition. Individual threads are connected, existing connections can be extended, or new ones can be tied. In this way, the collective act of weaving takes up a question that runs throughout the exhibition: How can something new emerge from separation and fractures?

Sensing Loss - Uni Köln goes r e t u r n: 60 Minutes AnthroLab! with with Saleh Seid Adem Global South Studies Center AnthroLab Cologne

⏱️ 12 October I 4:30 – 5:30 pm I stage
This presentation follows Mulu, an Ethiopian migrant domestic worker, as she moves between houses in rural Wollo, Ethiopia, and the UAE, exploring how loss is experienced through shifting relationships to home, work, belonging, security, and attachment.
Following Mulu’s journey, the presentation asks what is lost, what remains, and what is made anew as meanings of home, belonging, autonomy, and future possibility are repeatedly unsettled and remade.
Saleh Seid Adem is a doctoral researcher and lecturer in social and cultural anthropology at the University of Cologne.

🔗Link in Bio!

A shared gathering around a table: we break bread, lean towards one another, share, talk and reflect on the meaning of return.

🫶🏼 Together, we write a small manifesto — asking how to neighbour, how to return, and how to be together. The manifesto will remain part of the exhibition return.

Come, watch, eat, talk and leave something behind.
