When Schiller’s »Räuber« (The Robbers), directed by Erwin Piscator, premiered at the Prussian State Theatre on 11 September 1926, the nightmares of conservative cultural critics appeared to have come true: Schiller’s iconic youthful drama was barely recognisable, as Piscator had staged it as a revolutionary play. Karl and Franz were no longer at the centre of attention; instead, the focus shifted to the collective body of the robbers. Piscator condensed the play into a rapid succession of scenes separated only by changes in lighting. In this way, he employed theatrical means to imitate the rhythm of film montage. The stage action was further intensified by the driving score of Edmund Meisel.
