These original 18th-century engravings from the Les expressions des passions de l’âme, conceived by Charles Le Brun. Edited in Paris by Jean Audran, engraver to the King at his Academy; at the Hôtel Royal des Gobelins. With the King’s privilege. 1727
Copperplate engravings, printed in reddish-brown (sanguine) ink.
Sheet size: approx. 38.5 × 26 cm.
Charles Le Brun (1619 – 1690) was a French painter, physiognomist, art theorist, and a director of several art schools of his time. He served as a court painter to Louis XIV, who declared him „the greatest French artist of all time“. Le Brun was a dominant figure in 17th-century French art and was influenced by Nicolas Poussin.

Mezzotint, engaged by Pierre Drevet, after self-portrait of Hyacinthe Rigaud printed on thin laid (verge) paper with watermarks.
At the lower part of the image, on a stone tablet, the Latin inscription:
“Hanc Hyacinthi Rigaud Perpinianensis pictoriæ Regii effigiem”
This is an original early 18th-century engraved portrait depicting Hyacinthe (Hyacinthus) Rigaud (1659–1743), the celebrated French Baroque portrait painter.

The antique map “Rammekens oft Zeeburg.” (Plan of Rammekens or Zeeburg.)
From the famous city Atlas “Toneel der Steeden” published by Joan Blaeu, 1649. Copper engraving on verge type hand laid paper.
Sheet size: 52  x 62 cm.
Joan Blaeu (1596 - 1673), a famous Dutch cartographer.  Around 1649 Joan Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps named Tooneel der Steeden (Views of Cities). In 1651 he was voted into the Amsterdam council. In 1654 Joan published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. In 1662 he reissued the atlas with 11 volumes, and one for oceans. It was also known as Atlas Maior. A cosmology was planned as their next project, but a fire destroyed the studio completely in 1672.
Fort Rammekens was built in 1547 on the orders of Emperor Charles V. It is located in Ritte, the Netherlands, and is considered the oldest sea fortress in the country.
