Ich bin Jahrgang 1959, Vater zweier Söhne, Politologe und Journalist. Seit Beginn der 1980er-Jahre bin ich mit Tansania und Tansanier:innen verbandelt. Erst als überforderter, lernender Tourist, Student und Reisebuchautor, als dreifacher Kilimanjaro-Bezwinger, dann als Autor politischer Handbücher zu den L
ändern Ostafrikas, als Journalist und bis 2005 stellvertretender Chefredakteur eines Afrika-Magazins. Von1983 bis 2014 lebte ich in Hamburg, dort lernte ich früh David und seine Familie kennen. In mehr als einem Dutzend langer Reisen quer durchs Land wurde Tanzania zu meiner zweiten Heimat. Mein Brot verdient habe ich 30 Jahre lang als Kulturmanager und Straßenkunstexperte in Hamburg, wo ich u.a. das STAMP-Festival begründete. Die letzten zehn Jahre brachte ich als Fundraiser einer Krebsberatungsstelle in Celle jährlich rund eine halbe Million Euro zusammen. Jetzt kommt die Rente! Was kann ich da Sinnvolleres tun, als aufstrebende tansanische Künstler:innen zu fördern! Daran brauche ich nichts zu verdienen außer Befriedigung. Die Hoffnung auf eine sich selbst tragende, selbstbestimmte Entwicklung ist älter als mein Berufsleben und weiterhin unerfüllt. Wo, wenn nicht in der Kunst, lässt sich ihr näherkommen? Einkömmliche Verhältnisse für aufstrebende tanzanische Künstler lassen sich herstellen. David Kyungu
Born in 1958, father of three, a journalist (columnist), a film-maker and a cartoonist. Son of a civil servant (during the colonial period), I grew up in Ibungila village, Tukuyu district and later moved to Morogoro and Tabora for primary and higher education. After that, I proceeded to Italy (in 1980) and Germany (by the end of 1981) for further studies. Right during the early years of my studies and later work in Hamburg, I met and began a friendship with Fritz. It is with great satisfaction to realize that the almost four decades of friendship between us is now accumulating with such a joint project on art. Since early 2003, after departing from 21 years of residence in Hamburg, I'm now among the permanent residents of Mikocheni, an area with a rich culture of art and artists in the city of Dar-es-Salaam. Indeed, promoting creative and talented artists is part of my nature and desire.
