Dagmar Schürrer reflects in her solo show »SYMBIOTIC SYNCHRONY« at SOMA Art Berlin on the deep entanglements of human consciousness, natural environment, and current technology.
With a multimedia installation consisting of digital animations, large scale projections, and mixed reality applications, she creates a spatial narrative in which she poetically links the scientific concepts of symbiosis and neural synchrony. The artist applies those to our existence in the postdigital. Both theoretical approaches highlight the interconnectivity of all organic and non-organic agents, challenging concepts of individuality, singular consciousness, and subjectivity.
Schürrer offers her interpretation of the idea of a metaorganism, spanning across the analogue, the digital, the organic and the inorganic, creating an intricate space of hybrid experiences.
Curator: Peggy Schoenegge

Vernacular Institute showcases Val Lee’s dual film installation, I May Doze for Millions of Years and Buenos días mujeres, offering an alternative perspective on the concept of ‘blue bird’ as an idiosyncratic and unconventional aspect of our lived experience. Lee’s films delve into her exploration of contemporary societal oppression, particularly through the lens of experimental documentary, focusing on the sociological investigation of violence and complex political situations. Val Lee explores the psychological state of perpetrators within the theoretical framework of total institutions, examining their spatial and psychological characteristics. This concept is rooted in the thesis of sociologist Erving Goffman, who explored environments where large numbers of individuals are isolated from wider society for extended periods and live under strict administrative control. These two films involve interdisciplinary collaborations with filmmakers, artists, and participants from diverse backgrounds spanning locations in Mexico City, including a security company, a producer of queer pornography, and a marginal family engaged in street performance. ᴄᴜʀᴀᴛᴏʀ ᴊᴏ ʏɪɴɢ ᴘᴇɴɢ - ᴍᴇxɪᴄᴏ ᴄɪᴛʏ ᴘᴀʀᴛɴᴇʀꜱ: ᴍᴇxɪᴄᴏ ᴄɪᴛʏ: ᴠᴇʀɴᴀᴄᴜʟᴀʀ ɪɴꜱᴛɪᴛᴜᴛᴇ @ᴠᴇʀɴᴀᴄᴜʟᴀʀ.ɪɴꜱᴛɪᴛᴜᴛᴇ @b_la_m_

We were so happy to host, under our ongoing long-term initiative project “Blue Urgency,” the UDK Berlin “La Mer Blessée.” We really appreciated everyone coming to the exhibition and thank the UDK Moving Image Design class for sharing their awareness on ocean conservation. The Moving Image Design class participated in the “Baltic Sea Campaign 2023,” focusing on species protection and climate change. The aim of the project was to shed innovative light on the threats to the sea through film and to create artistic works, animations, films or videos using the possibilities of the moving image. The focus was not only on environmental destruction, but above all on the relationship between humans and the environment, the slow processes of change (‘shifting baseline syndrome’) and the lack of a reference system for our actions. The works pursue a documentary or experimental approach -narrative/non-narrative/anti-narrative. In any case, they are independent, artistic works that transport the students’ personal thoughts uncompromisingly into society. with works by Alina Abberger, Ezra Alvarez, Vincent Carter, Paulina Höfner, Stella Horta, Agata Hörttrich, Raviva Nsiama, Pauline Pyras, Yael Rathjens, Johanna Rohr, Felix Schirmer, Moana Schorlermer Filipe, Tim Stürze, Tristan Wheeler Klasse Gestaltung des bewegten Bildes, SoSe 2023 Prof. Kathi Kæppel @kathikaeppel, Manja Ebert @manjaebert @bewegtbildklasse @manjaebert @sea_shepherd_germany #seashepherd #udk #bewegtbildklasse #me

In 2014, SOMA Art Berlin was born from a belief in the transformative power of art and collective intelligence. We’ve seen a growing desire to blend art and technology, creating a space where art isn’t just observed but lived. Last week, under this vision, digital artist Dagmar Schürrer led an inspiring workshop. We explored Mixed Reality with the Meta Quest 3, seamlessly merging digital and real worlds. Participants collaborated on Unity projects, showcasing the power of collective creativity. Huge thanks to our amazing participants!
