NEW KVOST PUBLICATION : CLARA MOSCH
:
On the occasion of last year’s exhibition “Clara Mosch - and Early Art Actions in the GDR”, a catalog was recently published in collaboration with @dcv_books and is now available for purchase.
:
The legendary Clara Mosch producers’ gallery and the group of artists of the same name that developed from it are among the most significant representatives of the GDR avant-garde. The name „Clara Mosch” is made up of the beginnings of the surnames of those involved: Carlfriedrich Claus, Thomas Ranft and Dagmar Ranft Schinke, Michael Morgner, and Gregor Torsten Schade. The book combines artworks, editions, and posters together with photographs from the archive of Ralf-Rainer Wasse from the collection of the @lindenaumuseumaltenburg . One thematic focus is on their land-art happenings and plenair pieces.

CLARA MOSCH : 21 Leussow Recycling
:
The “Leussow Suitcase” is one of the most important works by Clara Mosch. The edition, which was created in collaboration with the Galerie Arkade in 1978, can be seen here in the original. The work was created after the performance “Leussow Recycling”, which took place at the plein air in Leussow in 1977 and was the first major performance of the group.
:
On a cleared forest plot the artists produced monumental objects made from felled wood. At the same time, there was no common plan for the creation of the objects, and everyone was building something different. Thus, Morgner created a lattice-shaped object and pillarsfacing west. Schade built an object that consisted of various geometric shapes. Biedermann built a large ladder, which he then climbed unclothed. Ranft erected a wooden line exactly one hundred meters long. This took about two weeks. Afterwards, all objects were burned.
:
The intervention into and the work on the landscape give invite references to land art, while both the term “recycling” in the title of the performance and the handling of the materials tie in with the environmental protection movement. The wooden box presented here is unusual in the group’s actionist oeuvre, as no further works usually emerged from the performances. The influence of Beuys and his multiples is possibly recognizable here. The case contains photographs, prints, and test tubes filled with the ashes of the burned wooden constructions.
:
In 1983, the suitcase was the subject of a discussion at the IX Congress of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR, where the legitimacy of performance art was disputed.

CLARA MOSCH : 15 & 16 Laying a cross, 1979; M. crosses the the lake near Gallentin, 1981
:
At the performance “Ein Kreuz legen” during the plein air on the island of Rügen in 1979, Morgner placed himself on the pebble floor with his arms outstretched in the shape of a cross. The other participants then placed stones on his body, from his forehead down to his feet and along the length of his outstretched arms, so that a cross was also created. References to religious symbolism, such as crosses, occur again and again in the works of the group and especially in Morgner’s work.
:
During the plein air in Gallentin in 1981, in which the graphic artist Klaus Staeck from West-Germany also participated, the performance “M überschreitet den See bei Gallentin “ took place. Morgner got the idea for it when he passed a lake almost completely covered with duckweed on his way to the plein air events. He went into the water and walked with his arms outstretched almost to the middle of the pond, creating a clear trail behind him. Finally he also dipped his head under the water, so that for a moment only a pond covered with duckweed could be seen. Morgner then resurfaced and submerged himself several times again until he finally returned to shore, completely covered in duckweed. The title “M. überschreitet den See bei Gallentin” refers to the biblical narrative of Jesus, which could be understood as a symbol of human and artistic existence, since every attempt to go over water inevitably ends with submersion.
