Q***RE KUNST IN DER DDR? Biografien zwischen Underground und Propaganda / Q***R ART IN THE GDR? Biographies between Underground and Propaganda
:
WED : 03 JUN 2026 : 7 PM
:
‘Coming Out’ Film Screening & Talk with Lead Actor Matthias Freihof
Moderated by Stephan Koal, Curator of the exhibition
:
The DEFA feature film ‘Coming Out’ (1989), directed by Heiner Carow, tells the story of Philipp (Matthias Freihof), an East Berlin teacher who gradually comes to terms with his homosexuality. His encounter with the young Matthias (Dirk Ku**er) leads him to question his sexual identity as he navigates societal expectations, prejudice, and the desire for self-acceptance.
Historically, ‘Coming Out’ is regarded as the only GDR feature film to focus on homosexuality. It premiered on 9 November 1989 at the Kino International in East Berlin — the very night the Berlin Wall fell — giving the film a unique symbolic significance.

Rita „Tommy“ Thomas (1931–2018) was a central figure and documentarian of q***r life in post-1945 Berlin. She worked as a dog groomer and also trained dogs for theater and film. Since her youth, she went by the name Tommy and openly lived out her relationships with women. Cut off from the scene venues in West Berlin following the construction of the Wall, she turned her apartment into a meeting place for gay men and women. In 1973, she co-founded the Homosexuelle Interessengemeinschaft Berlin (HIB) — the first association of q***r individuals in East Germany. Tommy extensively photographed both public and private moments from her own life and her social circle.

:
Screening of the first episode of the new ZDF documentary series about a gay artist couple from East Berlin and a virus that suddenly changed everything in the 1980s. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion about the political and social role of AIDS in the GDR. Why did Erich Honecker’s government wait for years before informing its population? What measures did the authorities take, and how did q***r people in particular respond to the threat? What role was the first gay film produced in the GDR, Coming Out, supposed to play in the fight against the disease—even though it does not address AIDS at all? The discussion will also examine the impact of the epidemic on the art world in both East and West. The art theorist Wolfgang Max Faust, who died of AIDS, once observed: “Art is no longer about art. It’s about our lives.”

SPOTLIGHT : JOCHEN HASS
:
Works by Jochen Hass are on display as part of the exhibition “Q***R ART IN THE GDR? Biographies between Underground and Propaganda / Q***RE KUNST IN DER DDR? Biografien zwischen Underground und Propaganda” until 28 June 2026.
:
Jochen Hass (1917–2000) was a German painter and conservator whose work was shaped by life under four political systems. In the GDR, he rejected a role as an official state artist and instead worked at the Institute for Monument Preservation, where he rose to become Senior Conservator. From an early age, he used painting to express personal reflection and subtle social criticism, particularly in his celebrated Harlequin series created in response to life in the former GDR. Alongside landscapes and still lifes, he also experimented with expressionist elements, while continuing to paint privately for himself and a close circle of friends.
