Das Futurium ist zugleich Zukunftsmuseum, Zukunftslabor und Zukunftsforum. Unter einem Dach beherbergt es im Herzen Berlins eine Ausstellung mit lebendigen Szenarien, ein Mitmachlabor zum Ausprobieren und ein Veranstaltungsforum als Ort des spartenübergreifenden Dialogs. Das Futurium steht allen offen, die Lust auf Zukunft und Zukunftsgestaltung haben. Erkunden, diskutieren, testen – das Futurium

ermöglicht seinen Besucherinnen und Besuchern einen Blick in die Welt von morgen. Es zeigt die Herausforderungen, Chancen und Risiken ebenso wie die Bausteine, mit denen Zukunft gestaltet werden kann. Dabei ist das Futurium zugleich ein Ort der Begegnung: Politik, Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Kunst und Gesellschaft kommen hier zum Austausch über die Zukunft zusammen. Über 5.000 Quadratmeter stehen dafür auf drei Etagen zur Verfügung.

🌊 Cleaning up pollution is often much harder than preventing it.

Plastic, oil and other pollutants can travel long distances through rivers, coastlines and ocean currents. Once they reach the sea, they are difficult to remove and can harm marine animals and habitats.

To tackle marine pollution, different approaches are being explored around the world. The Jellyfishbot is one example: a robot designed for calmer waters such as ports, marinas and canals, where waste can be collected before it spreads further.

At the same time, technologies like this raise a broader question for the future of the oceans: what role can technical solutions play alongside prevention, regulation and changes in our everyday behaviour?

Die Natur verändert sich ständig.

Neue Tiere und Pflanzen kommen nach Deutschland. Andere Arten werden seltener oder verschwinden aus manchen Gegenden.

Ein Grund dafür ist der Klimawandel. Aber auch Handel und Reisen spielen eine Rolle.

Forschende beobachten diese Veränderungen genau. So können sie besser verstehen, wie sich die Natur in Zukunft verändern könnte.

Dabei geht es nicht nur um einzelne Arten. Auch ganze Lebensräume verändern sich.

🍦 Ice cream season is here!

And while we're debating whether vanilla, strawberry or stracciatella is the best flavour, researchers are already exploring new ways of producing food.

Today, “classic” ice cream relies mainly on one thing: milk. Producing food for a growing global population while using resources efficiently is one of the challenges driving research into alternative ways of making dairy components – for example with microorganisms or cell cultures.

At the same time, scientists are investigating 3D food printing. In the future, ingredients could be assembled layer by layer into a product, rather than always following the same standard recipe.

And what if we combined the two? Perhaps the milk proteins in your ice cream will one day come from a bioreactor. Maybe a serving will only be made once you order it – with extra protein, less sugar or a specific level of creaminess, tailored to your preferences. Perhaps a single scoop could even combine different textures and flavours.

Ideas like these are still a long way from your local ice cream parlour. But they raise interesting questions: how might new technologies change the way we produce food? What benefits could they bring? What challenges might they create? And would we even taste the difference?

🌊 Plastic pollution in the ocean doesn’t start at the beach.

It starts with the way we produce, use and dispose of materials. Every year, around 52 million tonnes of plastic end up in the environment. Carried by rivers, shipping routes, coastal activities and even the wind, plastic can travel far before reaching the ocean.

Today, plastic can be found throughout the ocean: floating on the surface, trapped in massive garbage patches and even resting on the seafloor. Over time, larger pieces break down into microplastics that can spread through marine food webs.

The question is how we can use resources more responsibly, protect them and keep them in circulation for longer.

The good news: people around the world are working on solutions – from new materials and improved recycling systems to innovative approaches for cleaner waterways and more sustainable shipping.

🏘️ 🤝 Die MuseumsMeileMitte lädt am 13. Juni zum ersten Nachbarschaftsfest ein!

Mit dabei: wir, das Futurium, der Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, das für Naturkunde Berlin und das Medizinhistorische Museum der Charité.

Von 10:00 bis 21:00 Uhr entsteht zwischen den Museen ein Parcours aus Kunst, Wissenschaft, Austausch, Führungen und Mitmachangeboten. Der Eintritt ist an diesem Tag in allen vier Häusern frei.

👉 Ob ihr einfach vorbeischlendern, Neues ausprobieren oder die Nachbarschaft aus einer anderen Perspektive erleben wollt – kommt vorbei!

GOOD NEWS – we're extending 'Ocean Futures‘! 🌊
You now have until 31 August 2027 to explore the future of the oceans. 🦑🐟🐡

Filipino artist Leeroy New's immersive installation transports you across 150 sqm into a speculative vision of the future. Between a fantastical mangrove landscape and an artificial island, a fascinating yet unsettling oceanic atmosphere unfolds.

The sea creatures in the Ocean Futures installation, "Balangay Spacecraft", bring New's work to life – they appear as an extension of it. The performance artists wear costumes designed by Leeroy New himself and crafted from the same materials as the installation.
