The Helmut Newton Foundation was established by Helmut Newton himself at the end of 2003. It is a foundation registered according to Swiss law in Zurich, Switzerland. The Helmut Newton Foundation is an international foundation dedicated to the promotion, preservation and presentation of the photographic works of Helmut and June Newton, who under the name of Alice Springs has also produced a signif

icant body of portraiture photography since 1970. At its inception, Helmut Newton endowed the Foundation with numerous original photographs that comprise a significant proportion of his artistic work. In October 2003, the Helmut Newton Foundation entered into a formal agreement with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) that allows the Helmut Newton Foundation unlimited use of the ground and first floors of the former military casino in Berlin-Charlottenburg (Landwehrkasino) for exhibition purposes. According to the wishes of Helmut Newton, the Foundation should not be a “dead museum,” but rather a “living institution.” Various aspects of Newton’s multifaceted, innovative and provocative works will be presented over a series of exhibitions. The works of other artists and photographers will also be presented in dialogue with Newton’s work.

Today, we are sharing another edition from our series „from the archives“, which, admist the celebration of the current 76th edition of the world-famous Cannes Film Festival, was taken in Cannes back in 1996 for Paris Match. As you might remember, Helmut Newton also loved to stage his models in public, with landmarks in the background, by a populated pool or, in this case, along the beloved and extremly busy Croisette of Cannes. While the first image was taken on the balcony of the famous Hotel Martinez, starring the beautiful Eva Herzigová in a breathtaking outfit, Newton used the incredible crowd of press photographers, paparazzi and other spectators as the brawling background for the following pictures (and even ended himself on some of the colleague´s images). We see Herzigová surrounded by the masses, in a taxi with countless people in the background or on the red carpet... style for style.
.. BTW: what´s your take on the latest regulations, that the dress code now excludes „naked“ dresses and outfits that are „too dramatic“ on & around the red carpet?

Happy Birthday to the iconic Veruschka!

With her stunning and statuesque beauty, demanding presence, and fearless creativity, Vera von Lehndorff started to change the world of fashion in the 1960s, and thus became internationally known as the “first German Supermodel”. But she is more than just a model - she was, and remains, a living work of art. Her collaborations with the who´s who of photographers such as Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Franco Rubartelli, Horst P. Horst and Irving Penn resulted in some of the most iconic images of the 20th century, blending high fashion with avant-garde expression. Like Newton himself, Veruschka was never afraid of pushing boundaries, for example through her transformative body paintings and other spectacular works. In 2006, we also exhibited Veruschka’s iconic „Directed Self-Portraits“ – which she realized together with Andreas Hubertus Ilse – in parallel to the two Newton exhibitions „Yellow Press“ and „Playboy Projections.“

Veruschka redefined what it meant to be a muse – not passive, but a bold creator of her own mythos. Today, we celebrate her pioneering spirit, her revolutionary vision, and the lasting inspiration she continues to offer the worlds of art, fashion, and photography. Happy birthday, Veruschka!

For our current exhibition “Polaroids”, the Helmut Newton Foundation is closely cooperating with the OstLicht Collection, based in Vienna. We are delighted to share some more insights about some of the 60 featured artists.

William Wegman (*1943 in Holyoke, Massachusetts) is an American artist, best known for his conceptual photography, video work, and playful portraits of his Weimaraner dogs. Originally trained as a painter, he earned his MFA from the University of Illinois before shifting towards photography and video in the 1970s, becoming a key figure in the intersection of fine art and popular culture. In his work, he often uses wit and irony to challenge artistic conventions.

In his large-format Polaroid series, Wegman stages his Weimaraners in surreal and highly stylized compositions, transforming them into characters that blur the line between human and animal. His practice extends beyond photography to painting and drawing, often incorporating visual puns and historical references. Over the decades, his work has been exhibited at several major institutions such as the MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the Centre Pompidou, while also reaching mainstream audiences through collaborations with Sesame Street, Saturday Night Live, and various book projects.

Come by the Helmut Newton Foundation until July 27th to see our current show “Polaroids,” featuring Wegman’s take on the instant medium.

Last night, Hollywood made its way to New York City for the annual Met Gala. This year, the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is titled „Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,“ which explores the history and influence of Black Dandyism in the Western world, as well as the ways in which fashion has been used as a tool of both enslavement and liberation. Accompanied by the red carpet dress code „tailored for you,“ the attendees showed us a variety of suits, dresses and more that also addressed Black history and showcased Black craftsmanship.

One of the celebrated was the late André Leon Talley, the legendary American fashion journalist, stylist, creative director, author, and editor-at-large of Vogue Magazine – also known as the first African-American male creative director of Vogue, in charge from 1988-1995. Talley was famed for supporting emerging designers and advocating for diversity in the fashion industry.

His iconic 1989 portrait, shot by Alice Springs at Karl Lagerfeld’s villa La Vigie, close to Monaco, was spotted everywhere ahead of last night’s event. The image is also the highest sold photograph by Springs, demonstrating Talley’s importance in the fashion world.

What do you think of André Leon‘s look in this portrait? Doesn’t he look superfine! Besides that, who was your best-dressed guest last night?

Happy birthday to the visionary artist Vanessa Beecroft!

The Italian-born artist is renowned for her groundbreaking performance art, which blends elements of conceptual art, fashion, and social commentary. Since the 1990s, Beecroft has gained international acclaim for her live performances and installations, often featuring groups of women arranged in striking formations. Her work explores themes of identity, femininity, race and power, challenging the viewer’s perception of beauty and conformity. Some of her fantastic works were displayed in the exhibition „Body Performance“ at the Helmut Newton Foundation in 2019, including the famous series of her VB55 Performance at Berlin’s New National Gallery, realised in 2005.

Beecroft’s influence extends beyond the art world: her collaborations with brands and designers, as well as her creative direction in fashion and music, have cemented her status as a cultural icon. With an unmistakable aesthetic and an ability to provoke thoughts and conversations, Beecroft continues to push boundaries in the world of contemporary art. We wish her all the best!

For our current exhibition “Polaroids”, the Helmut Newton Foundation is closely cooperating with the OstLicht Collection, based in Vienna. In the following, we are delighted to share some more insights about this collection as well as additional details:

Beside Newton’s Polaroids, presented in the three front rooms, the exhibition features works by 60 other photographers, including selections from the extensive Polaroid collection of OstLicht in Vienna. The collection, comprising around 4,800 works by 800 photographers, was originally stored at the Polaroid company for over two decades. This historic archive was saved from auction in 2009 by Peter Coeln, the founder of WestLicht, and has since then been re-established as an invaluable resource.

When putting the show together, our curator Matthias Harder had full freedom to draw from this historic archive, including outstanding works by Lucien Clergue, Barbara Crane, Alma Davenport, Toto Frima, Luigi Ghirri, Erich Hartmann, Sally Mann, Stephen Shore, Jeanloup Sieff, Christer Strömholm, Oliviero Toscani, Ulay, William Wegman, Stephan Erfurt among many more – some of which we will highlight in the upcoming weeks.

Come and check it out for yourself until July 27th, 2025.
