As part of this year’s Art Basel Exclusive Program, we unveiled our presentation of works by the late Austrian artist Walter Pichler alongside British artist Sarah Lucas’s striking portrait of fellow artist Maggi Hambling, depicted as one of Lucas’s iconic Bunnies.
After gaining recognition in the 1960s for futuristic, dystopian works made from then-novel materials such as PVC, fiberglass, and other synthetic industrial elements, Pichler underwent a radical shift in both life and practice when he moved in 1972 to a historic farmstead in St. Martin, Burgenland. Clay, plaster, wood, straw, and metal — in short, materials drawn largely from his natural surroundings — became central to his work, alongside what he described as the “material of time.”
