A–Z is dedicated to developing, showcasing and promoting ideas and projects in which graphic design goes beyond its boundaries and explores its more unconventional and experimental facets.

Exploring the relationship between type design and tools, GridType Vol. 1 presents an edition of ten typefaces created with the experimental type tool grid-type.com. With typefaces by Anna Cairns, Boom Promphan Suksumek & Anna Srikitkul, Charlotte Rohde, Hanna Boslau, Julie Werenskjold Sørensen, Miquel Hervás Gómez & César Rogers (fanfare), Studio HanLi, Svatopluk Ručka, Trang Hà and Özgür Deniz Koldaş. With interviews by Lena Weber, studio pointer* and Céline Hurka.

The publication launches GridType Vol.1, an edition of typefaces drawn by 10 designers with the tool. The publication presents the type specimen for the typefaces, which are available for download via grid-type.com. Additionally, it also gives insight into type and tools. Through Q&As and interviews it discusses type design and technology—such as the relationship between type and tech development, or why we should build our own tools.

WOMEN* & TYPE! This flag project brings the museum into the street, and the street into the museum. Along Wilhelmstraße in Wiesbaden, typographic flags by 18 international designers explore identity, origin, gender, visibility and diversity through typography as a political, cultural and public medium.

Some of the designers who were involved in the program at A—Z are also part of this meaningful project, namely Loraine Furter, Aeni Kaiser, Golnar Kat Rahmani, Benedetta Crippa, Flavia Nalon, The Rodina, and A—Z founder Anja Lutz. It also includes flags by Tereza Bettinardi, Camille Circlude, Rejane Dal Bello, Minjoo Ham, Studio Katie Kerr, Lavinia Lascaris, Evi O, Liza De Fossez, Elaine Ramos and Yah Leng Yu.

The project is initiated by Prof. Dr. Isabel Naegele and Prof. Dr. Petra Eisele of Hochschule Mainz. The exhibition’s visual identity was developed by students Sophie Wolf and Celina Schütz. WOMEN* & TYPE is a collaboration between Museum Wiesbaden and the Institut Designlabor Gutenberg at Hochschule Mainz, as part of World Design Capital 2026. On view until 4 October 2026.

Sharing some nice memories from the recent event at PrintRoom in Rotterdam, where we presented ON THE EDGES OF GRAPHIC DESIGN FROM A—Z—∞ along side Nina Paim and Amy Papaelias, who presented their book Alphabettes. The evening was generously hosted by Karin de Jong and monderated by Clara Belaguer. Thank you all for coming to Rotterdam and for engaging in the discussions and sharing thoughts, ideas … and some drinks.

From A—Z to —∞.
A book that thinks in systems, not statements.
On the Edges of Graphic Design from A—Z —∞ grows out of six years of collective practice at A-Z presents in Berlin — where graphic design is lived, shared and continuously re‑imagined.
Conceived as an index for alternative graphic design, the book gathers projects, workshops, exhibitions, talks and encounters.
Alphabetical. Cross‑referenced. Non‑linear.
The second part, —∞, opens the system further — inviting international designers to imagine possible futures of graphic design.

Thank you all for coming and making this Alphabettes evening so lively, connecting and hot (in every sense of the word).
While editor Amy Papaelias hovered over the scene, presenting the cooking of Alphabettes Soup from afar, publisher Nina Paim from Bikini Books rocked the floor on site, together with the contributors Carolina Giovagnoli, Sol Matas, Tanya George, and Zainab Marvi who share stories, insights, and lessons from the book’s kitchen—and its many chefs.

Launching in June 2026, Alphabettes Soup celebrates a decade of typographic pot-banging and community-building through the network and (dis)organization Alphabettes. Edited by Amy Papaelias and featuring articles, interviews, and lettering by more than 250 women and gender-diverse practitioners from around the world, the book is a collective feast that challenges dominant narratives and imagines more decentralized futures for design networks. In this event, publisher Nina Paim is joined by the editor Amy Papaelias and contributors Carolina Giovagnoli, Sol Matas, Tanya George, and Zainab Marvi to share stories, insights, and lessons from the book’s kitchen—and its many chefs.

This evening brings together two publications documenting experimental initiatives in graphic design — the online platform Alphabettes and A—Z, a space for experimental graphic design in Berlin. Both books go beyond the anthology format, looking to alternative approaches, forms, and positions in graphic design, invested in shaping its future through hands-on practice and collaboration.

Alphabettes Soup (Bikini Books, 2026) celebrates a decade of feminist approaches to type research, design, and creative community-building. It blends key articles from the Alphabettes platform with original essays, interviews with members, visual histories, and reflections on past and ongoing initiatives — challenging dominant narratives in type history and inspiring future generations to build their own decentralised design communities.

On the Edges of Graphic Design from A—Z—∞ (Set Margins, 2025) celebrates the past, present, and future of alternative graphic design through the practices and community-building experiences of a multidisciplinary and international design community at A—Z Presents, Berlin.

A Font for the Future
Workshop by Anja Lutz
Thursday 28 May, 18:30–21:30

Using contributions from On the Edges of Graphic Design from A—Z—∞ as a starting point, we’ll develop hypotheses, speculations, and visions about the future of design — then translate them into a system of signs, a simple font, and an A3 poster (digital or analog). A fun, quick-and-dirty workshop for drawing out your creative vision for future forms of communication. You’ll go home with 10 riso-printed posters.

Prof. Dr. Gerda Breuer in conversation with Anja Lutz

Anja Lutz is the founder and curator of the Berlin gallery A—Z Presents, which views the recently published book on A—Z Presents as a “meta-level for the ongoing exploration of alternative approaches to thinking and design in graphic design.” Gerda Breuer talks with her about what connects the graphic designer to this ambitious concept, the criteria she uses to invite guests, and what other projects she is pursuing beyond the gallery.
