KÖNIG GALERIE

KÖNIG GALERIE A contemporary art gallery with locations in Berlin and Seoul KÖNIG GALERIE has evolved into a dynamic platform for contemporary art in Berlin and beyond.
(689)

Initially founded by Johann König as “Johann König, Berlin” in 2002, the gallery specializes in showcasing the work of both emerging and established international artists, with a particular emphasis on younger generations. Its program is characterized by interdisciplinary, concept-driven approaches, encompassing a wide array of artistic media, from sculpture and painting to video, installation, pr

intmaking, photography, and performance. In 2015 the former church St. Agnes became the new flagship space, aptly named KÖNIG GALERIE. Located in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the monumental brutalist building was originally designed by architect Werner Düttmann between 1964 and 1967. After a respectful renovation by the acclaimed architect Arno Brandlhuber, the project was awarded the Berlin Architecture Prize in 2016. In April 2021, the gallery branch KÖNIG SEOUL opened in the South Korean capital. From 2017 to 2023, König set up pop-up spaces in London, Vienna, Tokyo, and Monaco, as well as a second location in Berlin at Telegraphenamt adjacent to Museumsinsel. KÖNIG MEXICO CITY opened its doors in early 2024, and KÖNIG MUNICH in the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk opens as the gallery’s third location in Germany in May 2024. The gallery has successfully placed works in important private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Guggenheim Foundation. The artists exhibited by the gallery have been the subject of solo exhibitions in institutions worldwide, are regularly included in prestigious group exhibitions, such as Documenta and the biennials in Venice, Berlin, New York, and elsewhere, and have also been awarded many significant prizes, commissions, and public projects.

These are the last days to visit EEUWEN at KÖNIG TELEGRAPHENAMT, a solo exhibition by Joana Schneider. Working between painting and sculpture, Schneider creates textile works from reclaimed marine materials such as fishing nets and ocean waste, shaping organic forms that bloom, dissolve, and reappear like shifting landscapes suspended between dream and matter.

Come by before it's over!

Opening soon at KÖNIG TELEGRAPHENAMT is FUGUE IN OXIDE, a solo exhibition by Alexander Wertheim—his second with the gallery. Using spray paint on primed canvas, Wertheim builds layered compositions from vertical and horizontal lines that form loose grids. Developed in series, the works explore rhythm, saturation, and repetition through subtle shifts in colour and density.

We look forward to seeing you at the opening!

Opening soon is LEAVE A MESS AGE by Hugo Ruyant, presented in the St. Agnes Vault, marking the artist’s first exhibition with KÖNIG GALERIE. Following the opening, we will be hosting a live episode of the WAS MIT KUNST podcast at KÖNIG GALERIE. This episode will be held in English and will feature Hugo Ruyant and Johann König on 8 June 2026 at 6 pm.

The exhibition reflects on communication, memory, and the turbulence of contemporary life through two contrasting bodies of work: birds and seashells. Oscillating between noise and silence, Ruyant’s paintings move between expressive, large-scale gestures and intimate, contemplative detail.

Book your ticket for this live episode of WAS MIT KUNST via the link below.

These are the last days to see CHAPEL OF GHOULS by Anselm Reyle on view at KÖNIG GALERIE. Presented in the Chapel of St. Agnes, the exhibition features neon spray interventions, reflective CHROME BRUSH PAINTINGS, and enlarged ceramic sculptures inspired by Fat Lava vases that blur painting, sculpture, and object.

Opening soon is WUNDERKAMMER by Danish artist Tue Greenfort, presented in the Chapel of St. Agnes at KÖNIG GALERIE.

Marking his ninth solo exhibition with the gallery, Greenfort continues his interdisciplinary exploration of the intersections between nature and culture, ecology, and social systems. Drawing on influences from Land Art and research-based practices of the 1960s and 1970s, his works examine environmental conditions, human subjectivity, and the frameworks that shape contemporary life.

Opening soon at KÖNIG GALERIE, is the exhibition YOU ARE NEVER REALLY ALLONE by Jeppe Hein in the Nave of St. Agnes. The title merges “all” and “one,” suggesting individuality and collectivity at once. Hein transforms his mirror balloon sculptures into penguins, whose reflective surfaces capture and distort both architecture and viewer, shifting between lightness and weight.

Named after penguin habitats and rooted in ideas of care and presence, each figure rests on stones from the Danish coast. As reflections change with movement, perception remains fluid, continuously reconfiguring the relationship between body, sculpture, and space.

We look forward to welcoming you!

This is the last week to experience LUNACY by Emily Weiner on view at KÖNIG GALERIE. Presented in the Nave of St. Agnes, the exhibition brings together visual puzzles, shifting forms, cosmic perspectives, and recurring motifs like spirals and thresholds to explore connections between mythology, physics, symbolism, and personal experience.

Ending soon—don’t miss it!

For her solo exhibition HALLOOOOO at KÖNIG GALERIE, artist Clédia Fourniau () presents a new body of paintings and, for the first time, works on paper. Installed in the Vault of St. Agnes during Gallery Weekend, the exhibition explores initiation as gesture becomes performance—shifting from sport choreography to the social ritual of greeting. Here, “Hallo” triggers a playful micro-scenario, where repetition transforms language into an elastic, cartoon-like form that constantly reconfigures meaning.
