Spaces and Non-Spaces
A lyrical interpretation of abstraction
Curatorial statement by Julia Vegh

Non-Spaces cannot be defined as a social or physical space. They lack the attributes of traditional spaces. One could only perceive it in an abstract way. Art is a delightful language that can bring us closer to recognize the dynamic between spaces and non-spaces. When we see an abstract painting, a geometrical artwork or a collage, each piece is attached to the interpretation of space and non-space - of its real physical placement and its conceptual and emotional dimension. The joy of playful creation with colors, rhythms of forms and shapes may be inspired by its surroundings. It can stimulate an individual interpretation of life and what space and non-space mean.

In the beginning of the 20th-century the abstraction of European art had a serious tradition and international prestige. Modernist artists renounced the objective motifs of reality to express their thoughts or feelings only with the help of geometrical compositions and paintings. With expressive colors, the aim was to affect emotions, while the strictly edited forms were directed to the intellect. Nowadays a young generation is carrying on this tradition and turning back to modernist ideals where art was a way to deal with complex changes by bringing different human capabilities together. It seems like young artists need to reconnect to previous movements to overcome today’s social issues.

ART MARKET BUDAPEST, the international art fair established in 2011 presents a unique artistic composition in a vibrant and exciting region and in one of the culturally most attractive cities in Europe, that gives an emphasized presence to fresh and inspiring galleries and artists including the now....

VOLTA BASEL 2022
JUNE 13—19
STAND D7

Wir laden herzlich nach Basel ein. Die Galerie WHITECONCEPTS nimmt an der VOLTA BASEL teil und präsentiert eine Auswahl an Malereien und Skulpturen von WANDA STANG / MYRTHE RÖDELBERGER / KERSTIN DZEWIOR.

WHITECONCEPTS Gallery is proud to announce its participation at VOLTA BASEL 2022. We present a fine selection of paintings and sculptures by Wanda Stang / Myrthe Rödelberger / Kerstin Dzewior.

The works of the three young German artists deal with a kind of eco-feminism. As a part of feminism, it sees the environmental protection and the relationship between women and the earth as the basis for artistic research and practice. The term was influenced by the French writer Françoise d’Eaubonne (1974). She calls for an egalitarian, collaborative society in which there is no dominant group.

For VOLTA Basel, the selected works relate to culture, religion, literature and iconography as well as the potential to reconnect nature. The different perspectives are brought into a dialogue, which allows the viewers to circulate between different levels of reality and perception as well as the dream.

„Eco-feminism can be seen as a combination of natural philosophical, social scientific and historical perspectives to deal with the feminist perspective in front of ecological crisis. It is also an appreciation of the always changing social sculpture and the liveliness of nature.” Nicole Loeser, curator and gallery director

Our Story

This is the power of art: The power to transcend our own self-interest, our solipsistic zoom-lens on life, and relate to the world and each other with more integrity, more curiosity, more wholeheartedness. Maria Popova

WHITECONCEPTS Gallery is based in Berlin/Germany. It focuses on conceptual art and an interdisciplinary-based exploration of various media that include visual and sculptural works, installations, performances and other creative interventions. The mission of WHITECONCEPTS is to cultivate an exchange among artists, patrons and the public about ideas concerning international contemporary art.

In 2009 independent curator and art manager Nicole F. Loeser founded the gallery. Understanding exhibitions to be opportunities for discourse, the organization presents artwork in conjunction with lectures, workshops, discussions and publications as a means of engaging the community and fostering learning. A central interest lies in featuring socially reflective and environmentally focused projects that introduce diverse and forward-thinking perspectives.
