Axel Obiger ist ein Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Berlin-Mitte. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2009 fördert er mit Doppel- und Gruppenausstellungen gezielt den Dialog zwischen festen Galerie-Künstler*innen und eingeladenen Gastkünstler*innen und -kurator*innen. Obiger versteht sich als Plattform für gesellschaftlich relevante Fragestellungen, die ihren Ausdruck in immer anspruchsvollen künstlerischen Ideen und Positionen finden. Gemeinsam schaffen Alke Brinkmann, Thilo Droste, Juliane Duda, Nathalie Grenzhaeuser, Harriet Groß, Gabriele Künne, Matthias Moravek, Enrico Niemann und Maja Rohwetter für in Berlin ansässige wie internationale künstlerische Positionen nicht nur eine Anlaufstelle sondern einen Ort für intensive künstlerische Auseinandersetzung. Die Ausstellungen finden in monatlichem Turnus statt und werden von Vorträgen, Performances und Screenings begleitet. Axel Obiger erhielt in den vergangen Jahren die Auszeichnung künstlerischer Projekträume des Berliner Senats für Kultur und Europa, eine Teilförderung des Jahresprogramms durch die VG BildKunst und für 2020/21 die Basisförderung des Berliner Senats.

. . . . . Axel Obiger opened in september 2009 at Brunnenstrasse 29 in Berlin Mitte (Center) as a artist run space for contemporary art. In addition to dialogue shows and curated group shows, every year Axel Obiger presents a supporting program of performances, lectures, discussions and artist talks. Collaboration with guest artists and curators is one key aspect. In form of an open dialogue between a guest artists and Axel Obiger artists, various artistic contexts and methods of working are elucidated in order to intensify the exchange between different positions. In our group shows and open-ended experiments on issues such as burnout, sociological icons in body and language, consumption, authorship and identity. Axel Obiger is tracing scientific and cultural discourses. Axel Obiger is a fictitious gallerist. The project-space “Axel Obiger” is an artwork itself, questioning role models and mechanisms of the art system. Alke Brinkmann, Thilo Droste, Juliane Duda, Nathalie Grenzhaeuser, Harriet Groß, Gabriele Künne, Matthias Moravek, Enrico Niemann and Maja Rohwetter are Axel Obiger.

The exhibition "Cut Outs & Conversations" brings together works by Hans-Peter Stark and Susa Templin, which enter into dialogue through shared processes of cutting, layering, and superimposing their imagery. Stark and Templin approach the gallery space as a shared stage. Their works draw on individual experiences, which they explore through their visual exploration of the constantly changing urban fabric of Berlin. Alongside the presentation of their recent works, they are collaborating on an installation comprising photographic and painterly elements that opens up pictorial spaces composed of temporal and spatial layers.
Hans-Peter Stark translates photographic motifs into paintings composed of multiple layers applied using stencils. Their pared-down forms allow for a wide range of interpretations. While the stencils initially served solely as tools in the painting process, they are now also exhibited as works in their own right.
Stark completed his postgraduate studies as a Meisterschüler at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts. He exhibits across Germany and internationally. His works are held in collections including the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Artothek at the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, the Galerie der Stadt Fellbach, and the SØR Rusche Collection in Bielefeld.

Susa Templin deconstructs photographed space at the intersection of photography and sculpture. She lifts pictorial elements out of the flat plane, overlays them in translucent layers of different materials, and unfolds them into three-dimensional structures. Her architectural constructions coalesce into translucent, walk-in pictorial spaces.
She studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and exhibits both nationally and internationally. Her works are held in collections including the Berlinische Galerie, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, the Museum für Konkrete Kunst in Ingolstadt, and the Kunsthalle Mannheim.

The artists have developed a series of open discussions to accompany the exhibition. The conversations will address questions relating to the art system: Who curates art, and how? How are themes and content developed? Why do artists make art, and why do curators organize exhibitions? Where do independent and established art spaces, such as institutions and galleries, intersect? How much freedom is there in working within the art world? Why exhibit art at all?

The sculptural hole is a multifaceted motif in art history. It functions both as a physical opening—perforation or cut—and as a conceptual void or absence that brings absences and the invisible into focus.

Performative hole-making likely began around a hundred years ago, when Francis Picabia punched a hole in a pamphlet. In the 1960s, site-specific interventions in buildings emerged (e.g., by Beuys and Gordon Matta-Clark), and in 1977, Walter de Maria drilled an Earth Kilometer for Documenta 6 in Kassel—a thousand-meter probe made of massive brass rods.

Earlier, the Italian artist Lucio Fontana had expanded painting into three-dimensional space with his pierced canvases and cut surfaces. He understood the hole not as emptiness but as the beginning of a sculpture in space and a transgression of the picture plane. Concurrently, Barbara Hepworth established her pierced sculptures, which guide the viewer’s gaze through a usually round opening in the form to the landscape or environment behind, thus creating an interaction between artwork and space. In contrast, Eva Hesse used perforation and void as central formal and psychological principles to break through rigid structures and make inner complexity visible.

The exhibition Hole to Hole, conceived by SKULPTURVEREIN at Axel Obiger, takes up such sculptural explorations—albeit in a decidedly lighter manner—bringing together seven highly diverse artistic works on the theme of the "hole" in a window display during this year’s holiday season (the so-called "summer lull"):

While Hans-Peter Stark’s work connects to Beuys’ intellectual universe, addressing the hole from a socio-political perspective, Florian Japp’s installation evokes the hole as an interactive, perhaps even athletic element. Veronika Brovall’s sculpture suggests the opening as a ritual sign connecting two worlds. In contrast, Jennifer Jordan transforms voids into plastic spaces with the softly cradled tubes of her hanging sculpture. Ralf Hoedt discovers the hole as a site-specific element, with nature appearing as a sculpture that stages itself through the view. In Nico Ihlein’s humorous vases, the technically necessary opening becomes a maw, and the Baroque sculpture beneath it a lively being. Finally, Tommy Støckel’s arrangements play with the specific exhibition situation, oscillating between a commercial display (perhaps technical?) of products and artistic intervention.

After all, the window itself is a large hole in the building’s façade, through which we glimpse the gallery space of Axel Obiger. Through the staggered exhibition design, the vitrine becomes a three-dimensional stage space that unfolds its special effect through its public accessibility and interaction with the urban environment. By consistently aligning Hole to Hole with this single-perspective window view, the exhibition blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior space, as well as between art and commerce.

Here, the hole becomes a structural element that connects the material and the immaterial, the foreground and the background, as well as functional order and artistic subversion. Whether as a physical opening, metaphorical gap, or strategic interruption, the works on display ask how holes—as deficiency, opportunity, or design principle—shape our seeing and thinking.

The exhibition can be seen permanently in the gallery’s window from July 17 to August 19.

„Shifting Grounds“ bezeichnet nicht nur veränderliche Gegebenheiten, sondern einen Zustand grundsätzlicher Kontingenz: ein Terrain, dessen Bedingungen sich fortwährend verschieben und sich jeder Stabilisierung entziehen. Gewissheiten lösen sich auf, sicher Geglaubtes gerät ins Wanken, und vermeintlich feste Kategorien erweisen sich als historisch und situativ konstruiert. Ein zielgerichtetes Fortschreiten, ein klares Navigieren innerhalb dieser instabilen Ordnungen ist kaum möglich – es ist eine Bewegung auf nicht gesichertem Grund.

Konstante Rahmenbedingungen werden unserem Gefühl nach immer brüchiger. Grenzen – sowohl physische als auch die des Sagbaren – werden zunehmend infrage gestellt. Auch Landschaften sind kein statisches Gebilde: Sie verändert sich stetig, bewusst gestaltet oder unter Druck geraten.

Die Arbeiten von Schroeder und Tekaat erscheinen auf den ersten Blick sehr unterschiedlich, doch ihre Arbeitsweisen zeigen deutliche Parallelen auf – insbesondere während ihrer Aufenthalte in verschiedenen Residenzen. Beide verzichten auf ein festgelegtes Konzept, arbeiten ergebnisoffen, lassen sich auf den jeweiligen Ort ein und reagieren auf das Vorgefundene. Ihre Praxis ist geprägt von einer sensiblen Reaktion auf sich wandelnde Bedingungen.

Die Videoinstallation mit dem Titel „Nachrichten vom Schwarzen Meer“ von Janis Schroeder widmet sich der Schwarzmeerregion, die zugleich Lebensraum und Transitzone ist. Die Videoaufnahmen entstanden in Bulgarien, Georgien sowie auf einer Fähre dazwischen und richten den Blick auf die Präsenz des Nicht-Menschlichen in vom Menschen geprägten Umgebungen. Das Projekt knüpft an die fortlaufende Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers mit den sozial und politisch geformten Narrativen an, die die Geografie der Schwarzmeerregion innerhalb einer komplexen geopolitischen Landschaft geprägt haben. Das Umherstreifen vor Ort, unerwartete Entdeckungen und zufällige Begegnungen bilden den Kern seiner künstlerischen Methode und münden in den filmischen Prozess. Die Texte im Video stammen aus griechischen Sagen, der Bibel, von Ovid, Kapka Kassabova, Jens Mühling und von www.tagesschau.de.
Diese Arbeit wurde mit finanzieller Unterstützung der Europäischen Union erstellt.

In Ralf Tekaats Zeichnungen hallen die Erfahrungen seines Arbeitsaufenthalts auf Spitzbergen nach. Präsente Referenzen sind die gewaltigen, zunehmend in Bewegung geratenen Gletscher, ebenso wie die besondere räumliche Situation vor Ort: Wer die Siedlung verlässt, ist auf bewaffnete Begleitung angewiesen – die Möglichkeit einer Begegnung mit Eisbären ist allgegenwärtig. Schicht für Schicht entstehen so großformatige, mehrteilige Bleistiftzeichnungen, in denen sich allmählich innere Landschaften verdichten.

Kurzbiografien

Janis Schroeder ist als Künstler, Filmemacher und Fotograf in Berlin tätig. In seinen Videos, Fotoserien und Installationen beschäftigt er sich mit der Transformation von Lebensräumen und Umgebungen. Er studierte Bildende Kunst in Münster und Genf sowie Anthropologie an der Freien Universität Berlin. An der Kunsthochschule Genf war er zudem als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im forschungsorientierten Masterstudiengang tätig. Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen gezeigt, darunter das European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, das Goethe-Institut in Sofia, der Pedvāle Art Park in Lettland und der Palais de Rumine in Lausanne.

Ralf Tekaat studierte Freie Kunst an der Hochschule für Künste Bremen bei Wolfgang Schmitz und Paco Knöller. Er hatte mehrere Lehraufträge an der Hochschule für Künste Bremen und an der Universität Bremen.
Seine Arbeit wurde mit verschiedenen Preisen und Stipendien ausgezeichnet. 2002 wurde er mit dem Bremer Förderpreis ausgezeichnet, 2005 erhielt er das Jahresstipendium der Stiftung Kunstfonds, 2017 ein Stipendium für einen Arbeitsaufenthalt auf Spitzbergen. Tekaat lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und ist seit 2026 Mitglied bei Axel Obiger.
