Galerie Friese

The gallery relocated to Berlin in the spring of 2015, when it moved to a historic Wilhelminian-style building on Fasanenplatz in what was once the West Berlin gallery district. The gallery program is unusually broad in scope, ranging from classical modernism to contemporary art. Represented artists include such major art historical figures as Willi Baumeister, William N. Copley, Georg Karl Pfahle

r, Norbert Kricke, Horst Antes, Saul Steinberg, Karin Kneffel, and Dieter Krieg. Our main expertise in the area of post-war painting is also reflected in Klaus Gerrit Friese’s honorary roles as chairman of the Dieter Krieg Foundation, member of the Willi Baumeister Foundation board of trustees, and chairman of the advisory board for the Walter Stöhrer Foundation. We also provide a platform for a young generation of artists including Ambra Durante, Asana Fujikawa, Franziska Holstein, and Claire de Santa Coloma. The gallery is also deeply committed to a pronounced, specially-developed education and outreach program meant to promote our venue as a place of cultural exchange. Public events and era-spanning exhibitions offer a number of relevant reference points for visitors; they also provide a framework for bringing various generations and specific aspects of individual art practices into dialogue with one another. We have recently expanded our efforts on this front to include a series of non-commercial exhibitions: Key examples include an exhibition of drawings by German philosopher of religion Klaus Heinrich and another of drawings by Peter Handke, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature—both marking the first time these oeuvres had been seen by the public. The exhibitions garnered international press coverage and have been documented in publications initiated by the gallery.
