OPENING 🥂 Tonight at 7PM the new exhibition of the Helmut Newton Foundation opens at the Museum of Photography: HELMUT NEWTON. BRANDS
On view is photography for fashion houses, advertising agencies, and industrial clients, primarily from the 1980s and '90s. Over 200 photographs, including many unknown motifs from Newton's collaborations with internationally renowned brands such as Swarovski, Saint Laurent, Wolford, Blumarine, and Lavazza, provide insight into his advertising photography. Entire series of images can also be discovered. Polaroids, analog contact sheets of selected advertising shoots, look books of fashion clients as well as some ads in magazines are spread out in showcases and visualize different uses. 🤩
OPENING 🥂Heute Abend um 19Uhr eröffnet die neue Ausstellung der Helmut Newton Fundation im Museum für Fotografie: HELMUT NEWTON. BRANDS
Zu sehen sind Fotografie für Modehäuser, Werbeagenturen und Industriekunden, vor allem aus den 1980er und 90er Jahren. Über 200 Aufnahmen, darunter viele unbekannte Motive aus Newtons Kooperationen mit international renommierten Marken wie Swarovski, Saint Laurent, Wolford, Blumarine oder Lavazza geben Einblick in seine Werbefotografie. Dabei sind auch ganze Bildserien zu entdecken. Otto Ehrhardt (1869–1942) was a drawing teacher and an enthusiastic amateur photographer. He captured his forays into the Elbe Valley in landscape photographs or portrayed his family.
When special occasions like Christmas or the turn of the year approached, the family sent homemade greeting cards and picture gifts, like this one.🎄🍀 For this, Otto Ehrhardt transformed his son Manfred, into a silhouette. Therefore he photographed his profile in front of strong backlight.
Otto Ehrhardt (1869–1942) war Zeichenlehrer und begeisterter Amateurfotograf. Er hielt seine Streifzüge ins Elbtal in Landschaftsaufnahmen fest oder porträtierte seine Familie.
Rückten besondere Anlässe wie Weihnachten oder der Jahreswechsel nahe, verschickte die Familie selbstgefertigte Grußkarten und Bildgeschenke, wie dieses. 🎄🍀Dafür verwandelte Otto Ehrhardt seinen Sohn Manfred, in eine Silhouette. Dazu fotografierte er dessen Profil vor starkem Gegenlicht.

The autumn holidays in Berlin have just started and are already almost over again. 🍂🍁🍂We brought the world into the studio at the Museum of Photography during that time. Scenes were created in the holiday workshop, from fantastic places. We are already looking forward to the next holidays with you!😀

Curious collections are many. In our current exhibition we show a selection of such. The photographer and artist Wolfgang Vollmer collects not cameras, but objects in camera form. From a piggy bank to a table clock to a baby teething ring, everything is there. 📷📷📷 There are now about 1000 fake-cameras, which, according to Vollmer, also reflect the "deceptive and surprising nature of photography" itself.

Kuriose Sammlungen gibt es viele. In unserer aktuellen Ausstellung zeigen wir eine Auswahl einer solchen. Nicht etwa Kameras, sondern Objekte in Kameraform sammelt der Fotograf und Künstler Wolfgang Vollmer. Von der Spardose, über die Tischuhr hin zum Babybeißring ist alles dabei. 📷📷📷 Circa 1000 Möchtegern-Kameras sind es inzwischen, die, so Vollmer, auch das „Täuschende und Überraschende der Fotografie“ selbst spiegeln.

A week ago today, the artist Eva-Maria Schön set up her installation "Light Sensitive" at our Museum of Photography. She refers to the photographic paper, which has not yet been exposed, as "fresh snow". White it comes out of the package, to then - depending on the exposure to light - change color.💡💡💡Let's see how the papers still change during the exhibition.
Barely 3 weeks ago, the pictures of the last show were taken down. But after the exhibition is before the exhibition. And so now again walls are moved and painted. This time it will be colorful.🎨🎨
We are happy to announce a very special project: For the first time, the Museum of Photography opens its doors explicitly for a young audience and shows the exhibition "Bird’s-Eye View / Worm’s-Eye View Photography for Children" (9.10.2022-19.02.2023). 🦉🐸 What you can expect, we will present to you in the coming weeks in more detail.

🔎In our third insight into the workshop on ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY, we go to the ZOO PALAST.
In operation since 1957, the movie theater was built according to designs by architect Gerhard Fritsche. As a cinema with two halls, it was an architectural novelty at the time. The photos taken during the seminar show how impressive the halls with their different lighting still are today. Spot on!💡

125 years the master of product photography, Willi Moegle, would have turned today. Congratulations! 🥳
His artistic photographs of porcelain, glass and furniture shaped product photography in the 1950s and 1960s. Willi Moegle's estate has been in the photographic collection of the bpk picture agency since 1999.

Formerly Zentrum am Zoo, today Bikini Berlin - the listed building in which the sewing machines of the clothing industry once rattled, now invites you to stroll, stroll ... and take pictures.😉 Outside it is characterized by the folding facade, inside by the light-flooded steel framework in green. No easy task for architectural photography. Which perspectives the students chose in our workshop "Capturing Space" you can see here.
We mourn the passing of HANSI MÜLLER-SCHORP, who died on July 27 at the age of 95. Her work became part of the photography collection of the Kunstbibliothek only last December. Her works are between product photography and photographic art, between compositional rigor and playful poetry, between space and surface. Our new cover photo shows a staircase in the Tasselhaus in Brussels from 1893. The house, which was the still young architect Victor Horta, was designed for the founding building of Art Nouveau. However, not only the architecture, but also some photos of it caught attention.🤩
The photographs first appeared in 1900 in the book "Neubauten in Brüssel" (New Buildings in Brussels) published by Ernst Wasmuth Verlag. The fact that some of them were republished several times also speaks for their special quality: For example, in articles on Horta in 1900 in "L'Art décoratif" and in 1903 in "Der Baumeister". Nikolaus Pevsner chose the staircase paintings in "Pioneers often the modern movement" to open his Art Nouveau chapter. After years in the publisher's archives, the photograph with the curved banister has now gone from being an illustration in the book to an object on the exhibition wall. Unser neues Titelbild zeigt eine Treppe im Tasselhaus in Brüssel von 1893. Der damals noch junge Architekt Victor Horta hatte das Haus, welches zum Gründungsbau des Art Nouveau wurde, entworfen. Aufmerksamkeit erlangte jedoch nicht nur die Architektur, sondern auch einige Fotos derselben.🤩
Erstmals erschienen die Aufnahmen 1900 in dem Buch „Neubauten in Brüssel“ des Ernst Wasmuth Verlages. Für ihre besondere Qualität spricht auch, dass einige gleich mehrfach wiederveröffentlicht wurden.So in Beiträgen zu Horta 1900 in „L'Art décoratif“ und 1903 in „Der Baumeister“. Nikolaus Pevsner wählte die Treppenbilder in „Pioneers oft the modern movement“ zur Eröffnung seines Jugendstil-Kapitels. Nach Jahren im Verlagsarchiv ist nun die Aufnahme mit dem geschwungenen Geländer von der Illustration im Buch zum Objekt an der Ausstellungswand geworden. 🎶After two years online, the Fête de la Musique - Berlin at the beginning of summer now brings again audience and musicians on the streets of Berlin .🎶
In our collection you can find numerous photographs documenting the hustle and bustle and music making on the streets of Berlin in earlier times.
Not played, but driven around, is an instrument in the shot we show you today: Mounted on a tricycle, it shows a double bass riding through Berlin. In 1926, the press photographer Walter Stiehr photographed this scene with an advertising vehicle of a musical instrument store. 🚲
🎶Nach zwei Jahren online bringt die Fête de la Musique - Berlin zum Sommeranfang nun wieder Publikum und Musizierende auf den Straßen Berlins .🎶
Bei uns in der Sammlung finden sich zahlreiche Fotografien, die das Treiben und Musizieren auf den Straßen Berlins früherer Zeiten dokumentieren.
Nicht gespielt, sondern herumgefahren, wird ein Instrument in der Aufnahme die wir euch heute zeigen: Montiert auf einem Dreirad fährt darin ein Kontrabass durch Berlin. 1926 fotografierte der Pressefotograf Walter Stiehr diese Szene mit einem Reklamefahrzeug einer Musikinstrumenten-Handlung. 🚲
🍴🫖🍸Objects such as cups, glasses, cutlery or industrial parts are in the spotlight in her photographs - strictly composed, Müller-Schorp put them in the limelight in her factual photographs, demonstrating as much perfection as a flair for lighting direction. She had begun her training with Willi Moegle in 1945. From 1950, she was initially his employee, and in the 1970s she finally took over the management of the studio. In addition to commissioned work for companies such as Arzberg, Zwiesel or Pott, the photographer also used the objects for free work. This resulted in images between abstraction and poetry.
In December 2021, the Photography Collection of the Art Library acquired her estate and with it a body of work that remains to be comprehensively discovered.

The interaction with cinema is evident in many of Newton's works. Sometimes he also cites a specific movie scene. The exhibition takes this interweaving as its point of departure and features works by Eve Arnold, Anton Corbijn, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Michael Dressel, George Hoyningen-Huene, Jens Liebchen, Ruth Harriet Louise, Inge Morath, Helmut Newton, Steve Schapiro, Julius Shulman Alice Springs and Larry Sultan. In showcases additional photographs by George Hurrell as well as publications by Annie Leibovitz and Ed Ruscha will be presented.

in 1852, the American photographer Gertrude Käsebier was born as Gertrude Stanton. She devoted herself primarily to portraiture and and thematized motherhood in her photographs.
Only after raising her children did she begin studying art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn at the age of 37 and soon turned to photography. Käsebier opened her own studio in New York City in 1897. Although she worked commercially, her portraits also made her known in the art world and she joined - at least for a time - the Pictorialist-oriented photographers around Alfred Stieglitz. In 1902 she was a founding member of the Photo-Secession and her photographs appeared in numerous magazines, including the first issue of the influential magazine Camera Work.
Independence was very important to Käsebier at a time when it was rather unusual for women to step out of their domestic lives. "I make my own money. I pay my own bills. I have my own driver's license," she once said.
The photography collection of the Kunstbibliothek includes a painterly photograph of her by another artist, Baetrice Baxter Ruyl.
im Jahr 1852 wurde die amerikanische Fotografin Gertrude Käsebier als Gertrude Stanton geboren. Sie widmete sich vor allem dem Porträt und dem Thema Mutterschaft.
Erst nachdem sie ihre Kinder großgezogen hatte, begann sie im Alter von 37 Jahren ein Kunststudium am Pratt Institute in Brooklyn und wandte sich bald der Fotografie zu. 1897 eröffnete Käsebier ihr eigenes Studio in New York City. So arbeitete sie zwar kommerziell, ihre Porträts machten sie jedoch auch in der Kunstwelt bekannt und sie schloss sich – zumindest für eine Zeit – den piktoralistisch orientierten Fotograf*innen um Alfred Stieglitz an. 1902 war sie Gründungsmitglied der Photo-Secession und ihre Fotografien erschienen in zahlreichen Zeitschriften, unter anderem in der ersten Ausgabe der einflussreichen Zeitschrift Camera Work.
Unabhängigkeit war Käsebier sehr wichtig, und das in einer Zeit, in der es für Frauen eher unüblich war, aus ihrem häuslichen Leben hervorzutreten. "Ich verdiene mein eigenes Geld. Ich bezahle meine eigenen Rechnungen. Ich habe meinen eigenen Führerschein.", sagte sie einmal.
In der Sammlung Fotografie der Kunstbibliothek befindet sich von ihr unter anderem die malerische Aufnahme einer anderen Künstlerin, Baetrice Baxter Ruyl.

Day 1: Masterclasses GusztávHámos/Katja Pratschke and Miranda Pennell
Gusztáv Hámos, Katja Pratschke stellen ihr Archivprojekt Sampling Cities (2012-19) vor und sprechen über un/archivalische Gesten sowie die Konfrontation mit dem Standbild im kinematografischen Kontext.

Über das Zusammenspiel von persönlichen und kollektiven Geschichten in ihrem Film The Host (2015) sowie über die Rolle der Künstlerin in der von ihr ‘gemachten’ Geschichte denkt Miranda Pennell im ersten Teil ihrer Masterclass nach.
Fotofilme sind Filme, die im Wesentlichen aus stillstehenden Fotografien bestehen. Fotos im kinematographischen Kontext erzeugen eine filmische Erfahrung. In Fotofilmen wird das Medium Film in seine Bestandteile zerlegt. Fotofilmautor*innen experimentieren mit dem Verhältnis von Sprache, Ton und Bild, sie reflektieren über die Eigenschaften des Kinematographischen. In der dreitägigen Veranstaltung Pop-Up Fotofilm Masterclass zum Fotofilm als experimentellem Labor werden drei aktuelle künstlerische Positionen präsentiert.
Seit 2000 erforschen Gusztáv Hámos und Katja Pratschke (Berlin) mit ihren fotofilmischen Arbeiten, was das Stillbild vom Bewegungsbild unterscheidet und welche Konsequenzen die Phasenbildaufzeichnung des Kinos für unser Wahrnehmung von Zeit, Raum und Bewegung hat. Miranda Pennell (London) arbeitet in ihren Videos mit Fotografien aus Kolonialarchiven und persönlichen Alben, um Zeit unterschiedlich erfahrbar zu machen und unser Verhältnis zur Vergangenheit zu hinterfragen. Sie zeigt Wege auf, wie das Stillbild, wenn es sich dem Bewegtbild verbindet, helfen kann, sich besser mit problematischen Geschichten auseinanderzusetzen. Die Vorstellung, dass Fotografie wie auch Film von einander abgegrenzte Kategorien sind, zerlegt Sarah Pucill und demonstriert dies exemplarisch anhand ihrer foto-filmischen Auseinandersetzung in Verbindung mit Performance, Skulptur und Malerei.

Das Museum für Fotografie ist seit seiner Eröffnung 2004 zu einem Publikumsmagneten für Fotografiebegeisterte aus aller Welt avanciert. Über eine Million Besucher zogen in den letzten Jahren die Ausstellungen an, mit denen die Sammlung Fotografie der Kunstbibliothek und die Helmut Newton Foundationhier insgesamt 2.000 Quadratmeter bespielen.
Die Helmut Newton Foundation zeigt auf den beiden unteren Etagen des Gebäudes die seit Jahren erfolgreiche Dauerpräsentation "Helmut Newton’s Private Property" und Ausstellungen zum Werk Helmut Newtons, seiner Frau Alice Springs und seiner Weggefährten: von "Helmut Newton: S*x and Landscapes" über "Newton, Nachtwey, Lachapelle: Men, War & Peace" bis zu "Pigozzi and the Paparazzi" und "Helmut Newton Polaroids".
Die Sammlung Fotografie der Kunstbibliothek bietet im Kaisersaal im zweiten Obergeschoss wechselnde Ausstellungen zum Medium Fotografie in breiter thematischer Vielfalt. Die beeindruckende Ruine des Kaisersaals bot von 2004 bis 2008 einen ungewöhnlichen Ort für zeitgenössische Kunst und Fotografie in Ausstellungen der Sammlung Fotografie der Kunstbibliothek. Fotografen und Künstler, Raimund Ku**er, M+M, Philipp Schönborn, Boris Hars-Tschachotin und Hannes Nehls, Regina Schmeken, Reiner Leist, Raymond Depardon und Simone Mangos, entwarfen spektakuläre Installationen in Auseinandersetzung mit dem während des Zweiten Weltkriegs beschädigten Raum. Immer wurden mit den Ausstellungen auch die Grenzbereiche der Fotografie ausgelotet, wurde nach den Beziehungen des Mediums zu Skulptur und Film, zu Religion und Geschichte gefragt.
Seit dem anschließenden Umbau bis 2010 eignet sich der Kaisersaal für Ausstellungen aller Formen der Fotografie vom 19. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert. Gezeigt wird ein facettenreiches Ausstellungsprogramm, das einerseits aus dem reichen Fundus der fotografischen Sammlungen der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin schöpft, andererseits aber auch Werke herausragender Fotografinnen und Fotografen sowie wichtige Themen der Fotografiegeschichte präsentiert. Parallel wird ein abwechslungsreiches Programm an Führungen angeboten, ebenso finden Vorträge und Symposien zu aktuellen Fragen der Forschung statt.
The Museum für Fotografie (Museum of Photography) has been a magnet for photography enthusiasts from all over the world since its opening in 2004. In the last few years alone, over 1 million visitors have flocked to see the exhibitions presented at the museum by the Kunstbibliothek’s Collection of Photography and the Helmut Newton Foundation. These two institutions have 2000 square metres of exhibition space at their disposal in which to present exciting exhibitions on diverse topics in the history of photography.
The Helmut Newton Foundation occupies the two lower floors in the building and has for many years presented its hugely successful permanent exhibition 'Helmut Newton’s Private Property', as well as individual exhibitions on Helmut Newton’s work, his wife Alice Springs, and his contemporaries, including: 'Helmut Newton: S*x and Landscapes', 'Newton, Nachtwey, Lachapelle: Men, War & Peace', 'Pigozzi and the Paparazzi', and 'Helmut Newton Polaroids'.
In the Kaisersaal on the museum’s second floor, the Kunstbibliothek’s Collection of Photography presents a series of rotating exhibitions that explore the medium of photography in all its protean forms. From 2004 to 2008, the Kaisersaal’s prevailing state of ruin formed a strikingly unusual venue for contemporary art and photography exhibitions. A string of photographers and artists – Raimund Ku**er, M+M, Philipp Schönborn, Boris Hars-Tschachotin and Hannes Nehls, Regina Schmeken, Reiner Leist, Raymond Depardon and Simone Mangos – designed spectacular installations specifically for the room that had been severely damaged in the Second World War. Their exhibitions always tested the very limits of photography, its relation to other media such as sculpture and film, as well as its relation to religion and history.
The hall’s renovation, which lasted until 2010, means it is now suitable to host exhibitions of all kinds of photography ranging from the 19th to the 21st century. A diverse exhibition programme is presented here, which on the one hand draws from the rich photographic collections held at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin while simultaneously featuring outstanding photographers and outlining important themes in the history of photography. The exhibitions are accompanied by a varied programme of guides, lectures, and symposia on current research topics.
