Das Georg Kolbe Museum ist das ehemalige Bildhaueratelier des Bildhauers Georg Kolbe (1877-1947).

Das Georg Kolbe Museum zeigt in einem Künstleratelier aus den 1920er-Jahren Ausstellungen zur Bildhauerei der klassischen Moderne sowie zur zeitgenössischen Kunst. Das Museum zeigt wechselnde Ausstellungen zur klassischen Moderne und zur zeitgenössischen Kunst. Das Museum im Bezirk Westend besticht durch seine moderne Architektur (1928/29) und durch seine Lage im Grünen. Das Wohn- und Atelierhäuse

A Jewel in the Berlin Museum Landscape
Georg Kolbe (1877-1947) was the most successful German sulpture of the first half of the twentieth century. His expressive sculptures dating from the nineteen teens and twenties reflect the spirit of the times in the European art metropolis Berlin, conveying a vivid image of the era they were produced in. Their close ties to now iconic examples of modern architecture is particularly enlightening for an understanding of their historical significance.

Die Booker-Preisträgerin Kiran Desai spricht über die außergewöhnliche Verbindung zwischen ihrem Großvater Dhiren Mazumdar und Georg Kolbe: eine Geschichte von Freundschaft, Kunst und Korrespondenz zwischen Berlin und Indien.

1925 porträtierte Georg Kolbe Dhiren Mazumdar – der Beginn einer langjährigen Verbindung.

Ausgangspunkt sind Briefe aus dem Archiv des Georg Kolbe Museums, die erst mit dem Nachlass aus Kanada 2020 an das Museum zurückkehrten.

Booker Prize-winning author Kiran Desai reflects on the extraordinary connection between her grandfather Dhiren Mazumdar and Georg Kolbe: a story of friendship, art, and correspondence between Berlin and India.

In 1925, Georg Kolbe portrayed Dhiren Mazumdar — the beginning of a long-standing connection.

At the center of the evening are letters from the archive of the Georg Kolbe Museum, which only returned to the museum in 2020 as part of an estate from Canada.

In conversation with Dr. Elisa Tamaschke.

Die Veranstaltung bringt Expert*innen zusammen, die ihr Wissen zu q***ren Kunstgeschichten außerhalb der großen Städte teilen und dabei ländliche Räume als produktive Orte künstlerischer Praxis in den Blick nehmen. Ausgangspunkt sind dey Künstler*in Ro Robertson, dey in Cornwall lebt und arbeitet, sowie die Konstruktivistin Marlow Moss, die in derselben Region bis zu ihrem Tod 1958 tätig war.

Im Dialog werden Fragen nach Sichtbarkeit, Vernetzung und Arbeitsbedingungen q***rer Künstler*innen jenseits urbaner Zentren diskutiert. Welche Rolle spielen Rückzug, Gemeinschaft und Landschaft für künstlerische Prozesse? Inwiefern eröffnen gerade diese Kontexte alternative Perspektiven auf Kunstgeschichte und Gegenwart?

Die Veranstaltung ist ein Online-Gespräch und findet auf Englisch statt.

The event brings together experts who share their knowledge of q***r art histories outside major cities, focusing on rural areas as productive spaces for artistic practice. The starting point is the artist Ro Robertson, who lives and works in Cornwall, and the constructivist Marlow Moss, who was active in the same region until her death in 1958.

Through dialogue, the discussion will explore questions of visibility, networking and working conditions for q***r artists beyond urban centres. What role do seclusion, community and landscape play in artistic processes? To what extent do these very contexts open up alternative perspectives on art history and the present?

The event is an online discussion and will be held in English.

Künstlerinnengespräch mit Tacita Dean

Tacita Dean (*1965) beschäftigt sich in ihrer Arbeit mit Zufällen, Spuren der Vergangenheit und mit Momenten, in denen Realität und Fiktion ineinander übergehen. Neben dem Medium Film umfasst ihre künstlerische Praxis auch Zeichnungen, Fotografien und Installationen. Viele dieser Arbeiten stehen in engem Zusammenhang mit ihren filmischen Projekten und erweitern deren Fragestellungen zu Wahrnehmung, Erinnerung und Geschichte. Ihre Werke verbinden Beobachtungen mit poetischen, häufig offen angelegten Erzählformen.

Im Gespräch mit Kuratorin Lucy Howarth teilt sie Einblicke in ihre künstlerische Arbeitsweise und setzt einen Fokus auf die in der Ausstellung präsentierten Werke.

Artist Talk with Tacita Dean

Tacita Dean (born 1965) explores coincidences, traces of the past, and moments where reality and fiction merge. In addition to film, her artistic practice also involves drawing, photography, and installations. Many of these works are closely related to her film projects and expand on their themes of perception, memory and history. Her works combine observations with poetic, often open-ended narrative forms.

In conversation with curator Lucy Howarth, she shares insights into her artistic approach with a focus on the works presented in the exhibition.

Karl Weschke, a German in Cornwall

Der Kunsthistoriker und Kurator Dr. Matt Retallick widmet sich in seinem Vortrag den verborgenen Verbindungen zwischen deutscher und kornischer Kunst anhand des Lebens und Werks des in Gera geborenen Malers Karl Weschke. Auf der Grundlage seiner Doktorarbeit und seiner in Kürze erscheinenden Monografie über den Künstler zeichnet Matt nach, wie Weschke zu einem Vermittler wurde, durch den Künstler wie Georg Kolbe, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Lovis Corinth, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Barlach, Max Liebermann und andere eine unerwartete Präsenz in der kornischen Kunstgeschichte erlangten.

Der Vortrag ist Teil der Reihe „Von den Rändern. Wiederentdeckte Leben aus Archiven“.

Karl Weschke, a German in Cornwall

In his lecture, art historian and curator Dr. Matt Retallick explores the hidden connections between German and Cornish art through the life and work of the Gera-born painter Karl Weschke. Drawing on research from his doctoral thesis and his forthcoming monograph on the artist, Matt traces how Weschke became a conduit through which artists such as Georg Kolbe, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Lovis Corinth, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Barlach, Max Liebermann, and others, had an unexpected presence within Cornish art history.

The lecture is part of the series “From the Margins. Rediscovered Lives from the Archives”.

The lecture will be held in English.

Pünktlich zum Gallery Weekend findet am Sonntag, den 03. Mai, um 15 Uhr das Künstlerinnengespräch mit Leonor Antunes statt.

Leonor Antunes (*1972) entwickelt Skulpturen und Installationen, die den Raum selbst als Teil des Werks erfahrbar machen. In ihrer Praxis verbindet sie Materialien wie Seil, Leder, Holz, Messing und Textilien mit handwerklichen Techniken wie Knoten, Weben oder Nähen. Dabei setzt sie sich auch mit oft Designerinnen, Architektinnen und Künstlerinnen der Moderne auseinander.

In der Ausstellung Räume schaffen. Die Konstruktivistin Marlow Moss. Mit Leonor Antunes, Tacita Dean, Florette Dijkstra und Ro Robertson zeigt sie eine immersive, eigens entwickelte Installation.

Just in time for Gallery Weekend, the artist talk with Leonor Antunes will take place on Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m.

Leonor Antunes (*1972) creates sculptures and installations that allow the space itself to be experienced as part of the work. In her practice, she combines materials such as rope, leather, wood, brass, and textiles with craft techniques like knotting, weaving, and sewing. In doing so, she also engages with often-overlooked female designers, architects, and artists of the modern era.

In the exhibition Creating Space: The Constructivist Marlow Moss. With Leonor Antunes, Tacita Dean, Florette Dijkstra and Ro Robertson, she presents an immersive installation she developed specifically for the exhibition.

In conversation with curator Dr. Elisa Tamaschke, Leonor Antunes discusses her artistic practice and its connection to Marlow Moss.

Ab dem 1. April präsentiert das Georg Kolbe Museum eine Ausstellung mit Skulpturen der bedeutenden Konstruktivistin Marlow Moss (1889-1958). Es ist die erste große Schau dieser wegweisenden Künstlerin in Deutschland.

In dieser Ausstellung tritt Marlow Moss in einen Dialog mit den Künstler*innen Leonor Antunes (*1972), Tacita Dean (*1965), Florette Dijkstra (*1963) und Ro Robertson (*1984).

On 1 April, the Georg Kolbe Museum opens an exhibition of sculptures by the significant constructivist Marlow Moss (1889-1958). It ist the first major presentation of this groundbreaking Artist in Germany.

In this exhibition, Marlow Moss enters into dialogue with the artists Leonor Antunes (b. 1972), Tacita Dean (b. 1965), Florette Dijkstra (b. 1963) and Ro Robertson (b. 1984).
